Chapter 9 - The Vanishing Archive

The bank hold protected the documents from routine deletion, but it created another problem.
Preston's attorneys claimed the alteration report was proof that I or Elena had interfered with the records.
Martin announced he would seek an independent examiner selected by the court.
I supported the request.
His surprise was almost worth the cost of the proceeding.
A neutral examiner would test every theory, including mine.
For the next week, we reconstructed dates from statements, server logs and ledger exports.
The archived entries had been modified from an administrator account assigned to Hale Strategic Partners' financial controller.
Elena had never held that level of access.
Neither had I.
The controller, Thomas Reed, gave a sworn declaration stating he had resigned months earlier and surrendered his credentials.
Someone had continued using them afterward.
He also disclosed a password-reset request sent from a device registered to Arthur Hale's office.
Arthur insisted the device was shared by several employees.
It was plausible enough to demand further investigation.
Then Vivian called my sister.
Leah played me the voicemail.
"Tell Amelia this is her last chance to act like family," Vivian said in a voice softer than I had ever heard her use in public.
"Family doesn't destroy family."
I had stood beside Vivian after surgery, organized her charity auction, and sat through endless evenings in which she inspected my choices.
Yet her definition of family seemed to begin and end with obedience.
I documented the voicemail and asked Leah not to engage.
That afternoon, Judge Morrison appointed a neutral forensic accountant to examine the disputed assets and the authenticity of the guaranty documents.
The appointment was not a victory.
It was a doorway to a process neither side could easily control.
At five o'clock the accountant called to confirm the engagement.
Before ending the call, she asked a question I had not expected.
