Chapter 8 - Project Harbor

I had visited Vivian's address hundreds of times.

The white-columned house was where she hosted charity dinners and instructed me on the proper seating arrangement for guests she barely liked.

Now its address appeared in a ledger connected to the disputed transfers.

I refused to jump from a suspicious line item to a criminal accusation.

Instead, Dana requested the project's contracts, invoices and corresponding payments.

The first records described construction management work at Vivian's property.

The second set showed inflated charges billed through two related businesses.

The difference was substantial.

Preston had been moving marital funds into expenses that appeared to improve a house owned separately by his mother.

Martin argued the work was legitimate and had been reimbursed.

We asked for proof of reimbursement.

None arrived.

At a settlement conference, Arthur tried a different approach.

He told me I could leave with a modest payment, keep my silence and preserve my reputation.

"You have no idea how expensive this can become," he said.

"I know exactly how expensive litigation can become."

"Then be practical."

He slid a settlement proposal across the table.

It required me to acknowledge that the disputed guaranty was valid.

It also required permanent confidentiality about the company's books.

I pushed it back.

"I will not sign a false acknowledgment."

Arthur's pleasant expression disappeared.

"You don't know what you're refusing."

"I know what I'm being asked to certify."

Preston remained silent until I stood to leave.

Then he said the sentence that stayed with me all night.

"Mother said you would eventually choose pride over survival."

I turned back.

"Did she also tell you to put my name on a debt I never authorized?"

His face changed before he could control it.

It was not an admission.

But it told me I had finally asked the question he feared.

The next morning we learned that the bank had placed a temporary hold on documents relating to Project Harbor.
