Chapter 8 - The Wrong Target

Ellison's technicians confirmed that the bracelet bead was a harmless near-field identification tag, not an explosive or tracker.

It could store a small digital reference that ordinary scanners overlooked.

The reference pointed to an encrypted audit archive created seventeen months earlier.

It had not come from Lily.

It had come from Ben, my husband, who died sixteen months ago in what the Navy had called a vehicle accident.

My hands became numb as Dom read the date aloud.

The bead had been inside Lily's bracelet when she gave it to me, but the bracelet originally belonged to Ben's old field bag.

He used to keep colored cord for tying equipment tags.

I'd let Lily braid a bracelet from it after his death.

What if the bead had always been there?

What if someone had been hunting it long before the defective shipment appeared?

Ellison pulled Ben's accident report.

He had been driving home after an off-site meeting with a civilian procurement auditor named Celia Ward.

Ward had disappeared the same week, reportedly after resigning her position.

The review found no evidence of foul play.

I had accepted that conclusion because grief left me with no strength to fight it.

Now the report looked different.

Ben had called me twice that afternoon and left no voicemail.

He rarely called twice unless something was wrong.

Dom checked the old case notes and found that an investigator had requested Ben's personal effects, but the transfer form was never completed.

The signature belonged to Mercer.

"He keeps appearing at every sealed door," Dom said.

I stared at my daughter's photograph.

"Maybe Lily wasn't taken because I found the carabiners."

Ellison nodded slowly.

"Maybe the carabiners forced someone to move before they recovered something else."

The tag's encrypted file needed a second authentication key.

We didn't know where to find it.

Then my mother called.

She had remembered one detail from the night Lily disappeared.

Just before bedtime, Lily asked why the man at the door knew Daddy's nickname.
