Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Lily was examined by pediatric clinicians and reunited with my mother under protective supervision before she came to the hospital.
When I saw her, I reached out without thinking and pain flashed through both legs.
She hurried to the bedside, careful of the surgical frames.
"Mom, I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
She pressed her forehead against my shoulder and finally let herself cry.
I held her until she fell asleep in the chair beside me.
For one evening the world narrowed to her breathing.
Then Ellison told me Vale had been detained for questioning and Mercer had been placed on administrative leave.
The compromised shipments remained secured.
The ledger had been copied to independent investigators.
It looked like a victory.
But the financial trail contained a beneficiary name hidden behind layered trusts.
The person receiving the largest share was not Vale, Mercer, or Sloane.
It was someone using a legal identity linked to a private security consultancy that Ben had once investigated.
That consultancy had hired guards for the hangar.
Its founding documents were signed by a retired admiral named Richard Calder.
Calder had mentored Vale and appointed Mercer to his first major procurement position.
He now sat on the board of a defense-industry oversight foundation.
His public reputation was spotless.
When Ellison tried to obtain his accounts, the records were frozen by a temporary court order filed before the warrant request was public.
Someone had warned him.
Dom brought me the order.
"Calder has lawyers moving faster than investigators can get approvals."
I looked at the signature at the bottom.
The petition cited a national-security privilege that only a narrow circle of officials could invoke.
Then a message arrived from an encrypted account believed to belong to Ward.
It contained a single line.
