Chapter 12 - What Ben Left Behind

I made Ellison read Vale's message before I touched the phone again.
Her technicians preserved it, then confirmed the sending account had been routed through a command communications relay.
That didn't prove Vale personally sent it.
But it gave investigators a way to identify who had used her access.
Ward joined us on an encrypted conference call.
She described Ben's plan: hide a copy of the ledger behind a physical token that appeared worthless, then split the decryption into two parts.
He trusted me with one without saying so.
He trusted Ward with the other.
"He thought the safest thing was for you not to know," she said.
"It wasn't fair, and it wasn't his decision to make for you."
I looked at Lily's bracelet and wished Ben had told me everything.
The archive opened after Ward authenticated her portion.
It contained invoices, testing videos, internal objections, and a list of shipments diverted to supposedly classified exercises.
The tests showed the rejected carabiner failing long before its stated load rating.
Ben had marked twenty-two units from Lot 7-Alpha as the next shipment to be released.
He had been tracking it for months.
At the bottom of the ledger was a series of payments to an offshore holding account.
The account was controlled through a trust managed by Victor Sloane.
Mercer appeared as a signatory on several procurement amendments.
Vale appeared in the approval chain for safety exceptions.
But the most painful file was a short video Ben had recorded days before his death.
He looked tired, with the crooked smile Lily loved.
"Kate, if you're seeing this, I failed to make it back."
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
"I'm sorry I kept this from you. I thought I could finish it before it came near our family."
He glanced toward the camera.
"If they come for you, remember the difference between a bad product and a deliberate failure. Someone approved the failure. Find that signature."
The video ended.
For the first time since the accident, I stopped wondering whether Ben had made a mistake on the road.
He had been murdered for trying to protect people.

And somebody was using Lily to keep his work buried.
