Chapter 3: A Place Called Home

That evening, Mr. Harris brought both girls to the shelter.

The building wasn't fancy. The walls were old, and the furniture didn't match.

But it was warm.

Emily was given clean clothes, a hot meal, and a soft bed.

The kind girl, whose name was Sophie, stayed beside her for hours.

The two girls talked long into the evening.

Emily told Sophie about sleeping in abandoned places and searching trash bins for food.

Sophie listened quietly.

The next morning, Sophie returned with her parents.

After meeting Emily, they were heartbroken by everything she had endured.

Over the following weeks, they visited often.

Slowly, Emily began to smile again.

She started attending school, making friends, and dreaming about the future.

One day, while helping Emily with homework, Sophie asked a simple question.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Emily looked out the window for a moment.

Then she answered.

"I want to help children who feel forgotten."

Sophie smiled.

"Then you'll be amazing at it."

For the first time, Emily believed that might actually be true.
