Chapter 2: The Door Opens

The loud crash made both girls jump.

The heavy metal door behind them swung open, revealing a narrow staircase leading down into a dimly lit basement. A tall man stepped outside. He wore a thick coat and carried a box filled with supplies.

For a moment, the homeless girl froze. Fear flashed across her face. She had learned long ago that strangers were rarely kind.

The man noticed the two children sitting on the pavement.

Then his eyes settled on the hungry girl.

"Emily?" he asked softly.

The homeless girl's eyes widened.

"You... know my name?"

The man slowly knelt down.

"I've been looking for you."

The kind girl held Emily's hand tightly, unwilling to leave her side.

The man introduced himself as Mr. Harris, a volunteer who worked at a nearby shelter. Several weeks earlier, a social worker had reported a missing child living alone on the streets after losing contact with her family.

Mr. Harris had searched countless streets, but he had never found her.

Until now.

Emily stared at him, unsure whether to trust his words.

Then Mr. Harris opened the box.

Inside were blankets, warm soup, and children's winter clothes.

Tears filled Emily's eyes again.

Not because she was sad.

Because for the first time in a very long time, someone had been looking for her.
