The Shared Loaf and the Sudden Noise

The Shared Loaf and the Sudden Noise

The street was dead silent, but it wasn't peaceful. People rushed past, keeping their heads down, pretending not to see the broken world around them.

Shivering by a broken concrete wall was an eight-year-old girl. In tattered clothes and ruined shoes, she curled into a ball to survive the freezing air. Starving and exhausted, her eyes had lost all hope.

Everyone ignored her.

Until a second girl stopped.

Same age, but a world apart. Wearing a cozy camel coat and holding a fresh loaf of bread, she froze at the sight of the homeless child.

She stood there, observing her for a moment.

"Are you alright?" she murmured.

No response came from the sidewalk. The poor girl was too drained to believe in anyone's pity.

Without waiting, the girl in the coat broke the bread right down the middle.

"Please, this is for you," she said, holding it out.

Hesitating, the hungry girl finally extended a shaky hand.

"Thank you…" she choked out. "I'm so hungry…"

Tears welled up in her eyes as she tasted the food.

The generous girl didn't walk away. She sat right down on the dirty pavement and pulled the other girl into a tight, warm hug.

In that brief second, the brutal winter freeze seemed to vanish.

But right at that moment—

A heavy door behind them was violently thrown open.
