Chapter 16 - THE ACCOUNT UNDER MY NAME

The account was not at my bank.
It had been opened online using identifying details copied from an old insurance form.
Its statements showed incoming transfers from companies that had no business paying me.
Some transfers quickly left for other accounts.
Evelyn contacted the financial institution and advised me about reporting suspected identity theft and protecting my credit.
It was exhausting, humiliating work.
I spent hours proving I was who I said I was.
My son's wife had once ordered me to clean behind a toilet.
Now I was cleaning a mess made from my identity.
Wade's attorney forwarded details to investigators with his consent.
He claimed he had not known the account existed until Fallon mentioned it during an argument.
Whether that claim was true remained under review.
Robert was furious on my behalf, but he never asked the corporation to punish Wade outside its established procedures.
I loved him more for that restraint.
That week Marianne gave an interview to a business publication.
She accused Robert of using corporate power to pursue a family vendetta.
She described me as an emotionally vulnerable new wife manipulated by a wealthy husband.
I had spent years being invisible.
Now strangers were discussing me as though I were a piece of furniture in a boardroom.
I asked Evelyn whether I could speak publicly.
“You can,” she said, “but you should understand the risks and protect the investigation.”
I wrote a statement and then revised it.
It did not mention bids, bank accounts, or alleged crimes.
It said only that retired service workers deserve respect and that a person's worth is not measured by their salary.
I read it at a small community event honoring hospital employees.
Ruth stood beside me.
When I finished, the room rose to applaud.
The applause was not for Robert's money.
It was for people whose work had always mattered, even when nobody thanked them.
My statement spread farther than I expected.
Two days later a woman called Evelyn's office.
She claimed she had once worked for Marianne Vale.
She said Marianne kept a private archive of compromising information on people she wanted to influence.
And, according to her, one section of that archive was labeled HALE FAMILY.

The family she meant was mine.
