Chapter 12 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

The ballroom erupted in whispers.
A few guests rushed toward the doors.
Others lifted their phones to record my expression.
I felt suddenly naked in front of hundreds of strangers.
Robert asked security to preserve the recording and not delete anything.
He did not deny that the voice sounded like Wade.
He did not announce that it proved anything either.
“Audio can be edited,” Evelyn reminded us.
“We need the original source.”
The next day Wade called.
“Mom, they played that to make me look like a monster.”
“Were those your words?”
A long silence followed.
“Yes,” he said finally.
I sat down.
“But it wasn't about your mortgage,” he rushed on.
“Fallon was talking about something else.”
“What?”
“An authorization form for a family account.”
“Would I have signed it?”
“No.”
My heart sank.
He was trying to defend himself by describing a different betrayal.
“Then why did you say I wouldn't remember?”
“Because I thought you wouldn't notice.”
I closed my eyes.
I had defended this boy through fevers, schoolyard fights, and every disappointment he couldn't bear.
I had never prepared for the day when his most truthful sentence would hurt more than all his lies.
“Wade,” I said, “you need a lawyer who will tell you the truth, not a spouse who tells you what you want to hear.”
“Will you pay for one?”
There it was.
After everything, he still knew only how to reach for my wallet.
“No.”
He gasped.
“Mom!”
“I will help you find a qualified attorney. I will not finance another secret.”
He began to cry.
It did not change my answer.
That evening Robert showed me the papers Marianne had photographed.
They documented the creation of an independent review committee and a recusal process for conflicted executives.
His signature was genuine.
The implication Marianne had attached to the photograph was not.
“Why did she want me to distrust you?” I asked.
Robert leaned against the counter.
“Maybe because if you and I are divided, someone finds it easier to frighten your son.”
I thought about Fallon's warning that Wade would be the least of my problems.
Then an email arrived from Evelyn.
An investigator had traced the anonymous photograph of me cleaning the toilet to a hidden cloud storage account.
The account held dozens of recordings.
