Chapter 3: Justice Arrives Before New Life

Chapter 3: Justice Arrives Before New Life

Three months later...

The courtroom was filled with reporters.

The hidden camera footage played once again.

The jury needed less than two hours.

Richard Lawson was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation, evidence tampering, and criminal intimidation.

His daughter was convicted of attempted murder and conspiracy.

Both received lengthy prison sentences.

Outside the courthouse, Detective Ruiz stood beside the pregnant woman.

"You knew they would eventually make a move."

She smiled softly.

"I hoped I was wrong."

Ruiz looked toward the courthouse doors.

"But you prepared anyway."

She rested both hands on her now full-term belly.

"My child deserved a mother who fought back."

Two weeks later...

A healthy baby girl entered the world.

The detective visited the hospital carrying a small stuffed rabbit.

The new mother smiled as she placed the baby into his arms.

"What will you tell her when she's old enough to ask about today?"

Ruiz looked at the sleeping child.

"The truth."

"That courage isn't refusing to be afraid."

"It's making sure evil has nowhere left to hide."

The mother kissed her daughter's forehead.

Outside the hospital window, the morning sun rose over the city.

The trap that had begun on a staircase ended where every story of justice should—

With an innocent child given the chance to grow up in safety, while those who had tried to steal her future spent the rest of theirs behind bars.
