Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Was Never His Sister

Daniel's silence lasted only three seconds.

Then he reached for the file.

Nathan pulled it away.

"Do not touch this."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That report is wrong."

Claire stared at him.

"Which part?"

"Vanessa is my sister."

"Your father has one daughter listed in probate records, and her name is not Vanessa."

Daniel looked toward the records supervisor.

"This conversation is personal."

Claire almost laughed.

"You made my marriage a board agenda item yesterday. Personal ended there."

Nathan told the supervisor to preserve the entire box and access log.

Daniel objected.

The supervisor hesitated.

Claire reminded him she was still an owner and director.

The box was sealed again under dual signatures.

Daniel left without another word.

Claire watched him go and realized his retreat frightened her more than his anger.

He had been prepared for the cream, the forged letter, and the audit trail.

He had not been prepared for the red folder.

Someone inside the company had deliberately sent it to Claire.

Someone who knew what it contained.

Mara met them downstairs.

When Claire showed her the photographed page, the detective did not react visibly.

"We verify before we assume."

"You have said that enough times that I hear it in my sleep."

Mara almost smiled.

Then she became serious again.

A records search confirmed Vanessa Hale was born in Arizona, not in Illinois as Daniel had claimed.

Her legal parents were both alive.

There was no documented relationship to the Bennett family or Daniel's father.

Claire felt humiliated by how easy the lie was to check.

She had never checked because why would anyone invent a sister?

The answer was becoming obvious.

A sister could live in their house without raising suspicion.

A sister could attend family holidays.

A sister could ask personal questions.

A sister could become close enough to Claire to give her face cream.

Nathan searched old photographs Claire had stored online.

Vanessa appeared at birthdays, Christmas dinners, vacations, and company events.

Always near Daniel.

Always watching.

Mara asked Claire when Vanessa first entered their lives.

"Two months after Daniel proposed."

Daniel had said his father's side of the family was complicated and that Vanessa had been estranged for years.

He asked Claire not to press her with questions.

Claire had interpreted the request as kindness.

Now it looked like operational security.

"Why pretend to be siblings for six years?"

Nathan answered before Mara could.

"Because nobody questions a sister sleeping under the same roof."

Claire flinched.

She hated the implication.

Mara noticed.

"We do not know the nature of their relationship now."

Claire looked at the photograph in the report.

Former romantic partner.

The word former offered no comfort.

Her phone vibrated.

Vanessa was calling.

Claire showed Mara.

The detective nodded for her to answer and put the call on speaker.

"Claire?"

Vanessa sounded breathless.

"Where are you?"

"I need to see you."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel lied to me too."

Claire looked at Nathan.

"About being your brother?"

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered.

"You found the file."

"Yes."

"Then you know enough to understand I can't talk on the phone."

Mara silently wrote a note and pushed it toward Claire.

ASK ABOUT LINDA.

"Where is Linda?"

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

"Paul Sloan works for Daniel."

Another silence.

"Claire, listen to me."

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Paul doesn't work for Daniel anymore."

"Since when?"

"Since last night."

"What happened last night?"

Vanessa did not answer.

Claire heard a door slam somewhere on Vanessa's end.

Then a man's voice shouted something indistinct.

Vanessa whispered quickly.

"The Lakeside Motel, room twelve. Come alone."

The call ended.

Mara shook her head immediately.

"Absolutely not."

Claire agreed.

She had learned enough to stop walking into traps simply because someone told her to.

Mara sent officers to the motel instead.

Room twelve was empty when they arrived.

The bed had been used.

A disposable phone lay smashed in the sink.

There was blood on a towel, though not enough to indicate a serious injury.

Security footage showed Vanessa entering the room at 10:14 a.m.

At 10:52, a man in a baseball cap entered.

At 11:03, Vanessa left through a rear stairwell.

The man followed two minutes later.

The camera never captured his face.

Claire spent the afternoon with Mara reviewing Richard's background file.

The sealed settlement involving Daniel's former business partner led to a name: Owen Mercer.

Owen had co-founded Daniel's logistics startup.

Three years before Claire met Daniel, the partnership collapsed.

Owen accused Daniel of diverting investor money into related companies.

The case settled confidentially.

Owen then moved to Oregon.

Mara located a current phone number.

Owen answered on the fourth attempt.

The moment Claire introduced herself, he went silent.

"Daniel's wife?"

"For now."

Owen gave a dry laugh.

"Then I assume he finally did it."

Claire's skin prickled.

"Did what?"

"Convince someone richer than him that everyone else was crazy."

Mara leaned toward the speakerphone.

Owen explained that Daniel's favorite method during their business dispute was not direct theft.

It was narrative control.

When Owen challenged missing payments, Daniel told investors Owen had a substance problem.

When an accountant questioned invoices, Daniel said she was emotionally unstable after a divorce.

When a supplier sued, Daniel portrayed him as vindictive and incompetent.

"He doesn't just deny facts," Owen said.

"He builds a version of you that makes the facts look like symptoms."

Claire felt as though someone had described her marriage in a single sentence.

She asked about Vanessa.

Owen became quiet again.

"Vanessa was with him back then."

"As what?"

"Everything. Girlfriend. Assistant. Fixer. Whatever he needed."

"Did they pretend to be siblings?"

Owen laughed in disbelief.

"No."

"When did you last see her?"

"The week before our settlement."

Owen described a dinner at which Vanessa had secretly warned him that Daniel intended to accuse him of fraud.

That warning gave Owen time to preserve records.

"She helped you?"

"Maybe."

"Why maybe?"

"Because two days later, the only hard drive with the clean ledger vanished from my office."

Claire looked at Mara.

"Did you ever prove Vanessa took it?"

"No."

"Did Daniel?"

"No."

"Then who benefited?"

Owen's voice hardened.

"Daniel."

After the call, Claire sat in silence.

Vanessa's role was not simple.

She could warn someone and betray them in the same week.

She could give Claire poisoned cream and later claim Daniel had lied to her too.

She was not a trapped accomplice or a mastermind based on the evidence they had.

She was something more dangerous.

Unpredictable.

Nathan returned with news from the corporate forensic team.

The archival box request that exposed Daniel's background file had been submitted from an internal administrator account belonging to George Halpern, the elderly director who had known Claire since childhood.

Claire called George.

He answered immediately.

"I wondered when you'd reach me."

"Did you send me my father's file?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you just tell me?"

George sighed.

"Because the last man who tried to tell you disappeared after your father's funeral."

Claire thought of Eric.

"He's alive."

"I know that now. I didn't then."

George asked to meet in person.

Mara insisted on a public location with security.

They chose a private room at Nathan's law firm.

George arrived carrying no documents.

He looked exhausted.

"Your father was preparing to remove Daniel from every advisory relationship with Bennett Meridian when he died."

Claire stared at him.

"Daniel never had an advisory role."

George's expression told her she was wrong.

"Unofficially, he did."

Richard had allowed Daniel to consult on several logistics investments because Claire encouraged him to take Daniel seriously.

Daniel used the access to learn the company's internal approval systems.

Richard discovered irregular vendor payments and cut him off.

Three days later, Richard had his first major cardiac episode.

Claire's throat tightened.

"Are you suggesting Daniel caused my father's heart attack?"

George shook his head quickly.

"I am saying your father became frightened enough to start documenting everything."

George revealed that Richard had planned a special board meeting to disclose the vendor scheme.

It was scheduled for the Monday after he died.

The meeting never happened.

The agenda file disappeared from the board portal.

George still had a printed copy.

"Why didn't you say anything?"

George looked ashamed.

"Because Daniel came to my house after the funeral."

Claire felt cold.

"What did he say?"

"He showed me photographs of my son gambling in Macau and records of debts I didn't know existed."

George's voice broke.

"He said if I dragged your father's name through a scandal, those records would reach my son's employer and his wife."

Claire stared at him.

Daniel had not merely prepared documents.

He had collected leverage on everyone around the company.

George continued.

"I told myself I was protecting my family."

"You protected Daniel."

George accepted the accusation without argument.

Then he slid a folded paper across the table.

It was the missing board agenda.

The final item read: Review of unauthorized vendor relationships and recommendation to suspend all access associated with Daniel Bennett.

Claire's eyes burned.

Her father had been moving against Daniel.

Before she could speak, Mara's phone rang.

The detective listened for less than a minute.

Then she stood.

"We found Linda."

Claire rose so quickly the chair struck the wall.

"Where?"

"A bus station outside Madison."

"Is she alive?"

"Yes."

Claire closed her eyes in relief.

Mara held up a hand.

"But she says she wasn't kidnapped."

Claire opened her eyes.

"Then why did she disappear?"

Mara looked at George, Nathan, and Claire.

May you like

"Because she says she stole money from Richard Bennett for Daniel, and she thinks Daniel is going to kill her if she talks."
