Chapter 10 - The Cabin in Montana

State investigators reached the cabin outside Whitefish before sunrise.

Claire spent the night at Nathan's office watching a silent phone that refused to ring.

At 5:47 a.m., Mara finally called.

Samuel Price was alive.

Claire closed her eyes so quickly tears slipped out.

The relief lasted exactly four seconds.

Samuel was alive, but the cabin had been ransacked.

Hard drives were missing.

Paper files had been burned in a metal stove.

Samuel had been found locked in a storage cellar with bruising along one side of his face.

He refused medical transport until he spoke with Claire.

Mara arranged a secure video connection from the local sheriff's office.

Samuel appeared on screen wrapped in a blanket with dried blood near his eyebrow.

He was seventy, thin, and furious.

"You look like Richard when you're angry," he told Claire.

"You look like someone who should be in a hospital."

"Hospitals are excellent places to lose evidence."

Mara glanced at Claire as if Samuel had just explained why Richard trusted him.

Claire asked who attacked him.

Samuel said three men arrived shortly before midnight.

They knew his name and knew where he kept the safe.

They demanded the ledger and Richard's trust certification.

Samuel gave them a decoy drive.

He had kept the real ledger somewhere else for eleven months.

"Where?"

Samuel smiled despite the swelling in his face.

"Not in a location I'm saying over a police video link."

Mara did not take offense.

She asked whether Samuel could identify the men.

He could not.

They wore masks and gloves.

One had an accent Samuel described as local to Chicago's south suburbs, but that was hardly useful.

Claire asked whether Daniel had contacted him before the attack.

Samuel's expression hardened.

"Three weeks ago."

Daniel called and offered him two million dollars for all materials connected to Richard Bennett.

Samuel refused.

Daniel then claimed Claire had authorized the purchase as part of cleaning up her father's confidential records.

Samuel laughed and ended the call.

"He always hated being laughed at."

Claire almost smiled.

Then Samuel became serious.

He had completed the certification Richard required.

He could prove the shell companies ultimately benefited Daniel.

He could also prove the suspicious vendor approvals had been manipulated after execution.

"Can you activate the trust?"

"Yes."

Claire exhaled.

"Then do it."

Samuel looked away.

"I need the original ledger."

"You said it's safe."

"Safe and accessible are not the same thing."

Samuel had hidden it in a secure storage vault requiring two biometric approvals.

One belonged to Samuel.

The other belonged to Richard Bennett.

Claire stared at him.

"My father is dead."

"I am aware."

"Then why would he design it that way?"

Samuel explained that Richard did not.

The vault company required two authorized individuals when the account opened.

Richard intended to replace himself with Claire later.

He died before completing the change.

However, the contract had a death-successor procedure.

Claire could be recognized as Richard's successor if she presented certified estate documents in person.

The vault was in Chicago.

Daniel might know about it.

Claire stood immediately.

Nathan told her to wait.

They needed to confirm the procedure and notify the vault privately.

The company turned out to be a high-security records facility used by law firms and financial firms.

Nathan spoke directly to its general counsel.

They agreed to recognize Claire after verification.

An appointment was arranged for noon.

Only Nathan, Claire, Mara, and two state investigators knew the time.

At 11:20, Claire received a text from Daniel.

Enjoy your trip to the vault.

She stared at the message until the words blurred.

Mara swore.

"We have a leak."

The appointment had been arranged less than an hour earlier.

Someone inside one of four places had told Daniel.

Nathan's office.

The state investigation team.

The vault company.

Or Samuel's sheriff's office.

Claire felt the old panic return.

Every safe room seemed to have another door.

Mara changed the plan immediately.

Instead of canceling, she created two decoy movements.

Nathan's car left toward the vault with an investigator wearing Claire's coat.

Another vehicle departed for the courthouse.

Claire and Mara used a service elevator and left through an underground garage in a delivery van.

For forty minutes, nobody followed them.

Then a motorcycle appeared two cars back.

Mara watched it in the mirror.

The rider stayed with them through three turns.

"We are burned."

She instructed the driver to head toward a state police facility instead of the vault.

The motorcycle disappeared before they reached it.

The appointment was postponed.

Claire was furious.

"We're letting Daniel dictate where I can go."

Mara answered without sympathy.

"You being alive is more useful than you being punctual."

Nathan joined them later with news.

The vault company's general counsel had received a call fifteen minutes after speaking with Nathan.

The caller claimed to be Claire and asked whether Daniel could attend the appointment as her representative.

The counsel refused because the voice did not match earlier identity verification.

The call came from a spoofed number.

Daniel's network knew the destination but not the exact route.

That suggested the leak was probably in the planning chain, not physical surveillance alone.

Mara began isolating information.

She gave different appointment times to different people.

Nathan's staff received one time.

The vault received another.

Local police received a third.

Only Mara and Claire knew the real time, which would be set at the last moment.

Claire recognized the method from her father's business stories.

Feed different people different facts and watch which lie comes back.

At 4:10, Daniel emailed the board demanding an emergency vote at five because Claire had allegedly fled the hospital, disrupted corporate operations, and traveled out of state pursuing paranoid accusations.

Claire had never left Illinois.

Yet the email stated she was currently in Montana.

Mara looked at the message and smiled for the first time.

"There it is."

Only one group had been told Claire might fly to Montana.

The local police liaison coordinating Samuel's security.

The leak was inside law enforcement again.

Mara contacted state internal affairs without using normal channels.

Within an hour, they identified the liaison as an officer who had previously worked under Lieutenant Robert Kline.

The officer was removed from the operation.

Daniel's information stream narrowed.

At 6:30, Mara received a message from internal affairs.

Kline had failed to report for duty.

His department vehicle was found abandoned near the airport.

His service weapon was missing.

Claire looked at Parker.

Parker's face was grim.

"If Kline runs, he knows the wall is collapsing."

"Or someone wants it to look that way," Mara said.

Nothing was simple anymore.

The next morning, Claire finally entered the vault facility through a loading entrance before public hours.

Samuel had been flown to Chicago overnight under state protection.

He waited in a private verification room with a fresh bandage over his eyebrow.

Claire presented her father's death certificate, estate documents, and identity records.

The facility's counsel verified everything twice.

Then a steel door opened.

Claire and Samuel entered a climate-controlled storage room lined with secured cabinets.

Samuel pressed his thumb to a scanner.

Claire completed the successor verification.

A compartment released with a heavy mechanical click.

Inside was a black case.

Samuel opened it.

Empty.

Claire stared at the bare foam lining.

"Where is it?"

Samuel's face lost all color.

The vault manager rushed forward.

Access logs showed the compartment had been opened once since Richard's death.

Eleven days earlier.

Samuel had not been in Chicago.

Richard was dead.

The log recorded successful approval from both authorized profiles.

Someone had defeated the vault's identity system.

Nathan asked for surveillance footage.

The manager retrieved it.

The video showed a man wearing a cap and medical mask entering with a woman.

The man's face was mostly hidden.

The woman's was not.

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa stood beside him.

She looked directly at the camera while the vault opened.

May you like

Then she smiled.
