Chapter 5 - The Marriage File

Claire spent the night in Nathan's conference room because she refused to sleep in another anonymous hotel room while everyone around her decided what she should know.

Eric remained with Detective Chen for formal questioning.

Officer Parker arranged patrol checks near Nathan's office.

By three in the morning, Claire had read her father's note so many times that she could see every line with her eyes closed.

Daniel married you for that reason.

The sentence Eric had spoken outside Union Station would not leave her mind.

Claire wanted to reject it.

Even after the cream, the forged documents, the edited video, and Daniel's campaign to paint her as unstable, some private part of her still wanted the beginning of their marriage to have been real.

She hated herself for that hope.

Nathan found her staring at an old photograph on her phone.

It showed Claire and Daniel at their rehearsal dinner six years earlier.

Daniel was laughing with his forehead against hers.

Her father stood behind them with a champagne glass and an expression Claire had once interpreted as protectiveness.

Now she saw distance.

"You don't have to decide what the past meant tonight," Nathan said.

Claire locked the screen.

"He already decided for me."

At eight, Mara returned.

Eric's story had checked out more than she expected.

A hospital record confirmed he had been treated for injuries after a serious vehicle collision three days after Richard's death.

The police report number existed, but the report itself was missing from the archive.

Paul Sloan's current employment history was harder to trace.

A consulting company associated with him had received payments from Vale Ridge Holdings.

The same shell company appeared in Richard's bank records.

Claire felt the pieces begin to connect.

"So Daniel paid Paul."

Mara held up a hand.

"A company linked to Daniel paid a company linked to Paul."

"You really enjoy making every sentence less satisfying."

"It keeps people out of prison for things we cannot prove."

Nathan entered with printed records from the family company's legal archive.

He had searched for any references to Daniel before Claire's marriage.

What he found made Claire sit down.

Daniel had first contacted Bennett Meridian eighteen months before he met Claire.

He was seeking investment for a logistics technology startup.

Richard Bennett personally rejected the proposal.

The rejection memo described Daniel as intelligent but evasive about ownership, debt, and prior investors.

Six months later, Daniel attended a charity gala where Claire met him for the first time.

Claire remembered that night vividly.

She had spilled champagne on his sleeve.

He had made her laugh.

He had claimed he barely knew what Bennett Meridian did.

That had been a lie.

Nathan placed another document in front of her.

It was a visitor log from the company's old headquarters.

Daniel had entered the building twice in the year before they met.

Both visits had been for meetings related to his rejected startup.

Claire's hands became cold.

"He told me he'd never been inside my father's office until after our engagement."

Nathan said nothing.

Mara watched her carefully.

Claire turned to the next page.

There was a photograph from the charity gala.

Daniel appeared in the background thirty minutes before Claire remembered meeting him.

He was standing beside the event organizer.

The organizer was pointing across the ballroom.

Toward Claire.

"He knew who I was."

Nathan answered gently.

"Almost certainly."

Claire got up and walked to the window.

Below, traffic moved through the gray city as though the world had not shifted.

She remembered their first date.

Daniel had taken her to a small Italian restaurant and insisted they sit near the kitchen because he said wealthy people spent too much of their lives trying to avoid ordinary places.

She had loved that about him.

Later she learned that the restaurant belonged to one of his investors.

How many spontaneous moments had been arranged?

How many coincidences had been reconnaissance?

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

Nathan told her not to answer.

Claire answered anyway.

"Where is Linda?"

Daniel was silent for a beat.

"Good morning to you too."

"Where is she?"

"I have no idea."

"Your security contractor followed us from the board meeting."

"I have several security contractors."

"Paul Sloan."

The pause was brief.

"I know the name."

Claire closed her eyes.

He was going to deny everything by degrees.

"Did you know me before the charity gala?"

Daniel laughed softly.

"What?"

"You approached Bennett Meridian for funding before we met."

"So?"

"You told me you'd never heard of my father's company."

"Claire, every entrepreneur in the city had heard of your father's company."

"That isn't what you told me."

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"This is exactly why the board is worried about you. You're taking old trivia and turning it into proof that your entire marriage is a crime."

Claire gripped the phone.

"Was it?"

For once, Daniel did not answer immediately.

Then he said something worse than a denial.

"Does it matter anymore?"

Claire's throat tightened.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I loved you."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

The conference room went silent.

Daniel's response came quietly.

"And that was useful."

Claire stopped breathing.

Nathan stared at her.

Mara leaned forward.

Daniel continued before he seemed to realize what he had admitted.

"You know what I mean."

"I know exactly what you mean."

Claire ended the call.

Mara immediately asked whether it had been recorded.

Claire's phone did not automatically record calls.

Nathan had heard Claire's side but not Daniel's exact words.

Another near-confession dissolved into air.

Claire wanted to scream.

Instead, she set the phone down carefully.

"He wants me angry."

Mara nodded.

"Yes."

"Because angry looks unstable."

"Yes."

"Then he doesn't get angry."

Claire turned toward Nathan.

"What can I do that he cannot stop?"

Nathan considered the question.

"As forty-two percent owner, you can request an independent audit, but the board can delay authorization."

"What else?"

"You can inspect certain corporate books personally."

"Today?"

"If they deny access, it strengthens your legal position."

Claire picked up her coat.

Mara frowned.

"Where are you going?"

"To work."

At Bennett Meridian, security tried to stop Claire at the executive floor.

Nathan cited the relevant shareholder rights provision.

After twenty tense minutes, the company secretary allowed Claire into a records room under supervision.

Daniel arrived ten minutes later.

"This is harassment."

Claire did not look up from the ledger terminal.

"Of whom? The numbers?"

He stood across the table from her.

"You're disrupting the company."

"Then leave."

The records supervisor pretended not to listen.

Claire searched vendor payments for Vale Ridge Holdings.

Nothing appeared.

She searched Westlake Advisory.

There were twelve payments over two years totaling 2.8 million dollars.

The description on each invoice read strategic market intelligence.

Claire opened the supporting documentation.

The reports were generic and repetitive.

Several contained paragraphs copied from public industry articles.

"Nathan."

He moved beside her.

Claire showed him the invoices.

Daniel stopped talking.

Nathan asked who had approved the payments.

The digital approval trail showed two executives.

One was the former chief operating officer, who had retired six months earlier.

The other was Claire's father.

Claire stared at Richard Bennett's electronic initials.

"He would never approve this."

Daniel laughed once.

"There it is again. Everyone who contradicts you must be forged."

Claire opened the first invoice.

The approval timestamp was 2:17 a.m.

Her father had been hospitalized that night after suffering chest pain.

Claire remembered because she had sat beside him until dawn.

"He wasn't in the office."

Daniel shrugged.

"Remote approval exists."

Claire opened the audit details.

The approval originated from Richard's office desktop.

Nathan's face changed.

"Who had access to that office?"

Daniel stepped backward.

Claire looked at him.

"You did."

"So did a dozen people."

"Not after hours."

"Prove I was there."

Again.

Always the same challenge.

Prove it.

Claire began to understand that Daniel's confidence came from years of learning where evidence disappeared.

A clerk entered the records room carrying a sealed archival box.

"Ms. Bennett, this was requested under your shareholder inspection notice."

Claire had not requested a box.

The label read R. BENNETT - PERSONAL COMPLIANCE FILES.

The supervisor looked confused.

"That file isn't on the request list."

The clerk checked his tablet.

"It was added ten minutes ago."

"By whom?"

The clerk turned the screen around.

The request had been made under Claire's credentials.

She had not done it.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Maybe you forgot."

Claire ignored him.

Nathan inspected the box seal.

It appeared old and unbroken.

Claire opened it.

Inside were compliance reports, handwritten notes, and a red folder marked DANIEL BENNETT.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Claire saw it.

She reached for the folder.

Daniel moved around the table.

"That is private material belonging to the company."

Nathan blocked him.

"So is everything in this room."

Claire opened the folder.

The first page was a background investigation her father had commissioned six weeks before his death.

Daniel's former businesses.

Civil lawsuits.

Unpaid loans.

A sealed settlement involving a previous business partner.

Then Claire reached the final section.

There was a photograph paper-clipped to the page.

Daniel stood outside a cafe with a woman Claire recognized immediately.

Vanessa.

The date printed beneath the image was seven months before Claire met either of them.

Claire looked up.

Daniel had once told her he introduced Vanessa to the family after their engagement because Vanessa was his younger half-sister from his father's second marriage.

But the report listed no biological relationship between them.

Claire read the line again.

Vanessa Hale - associate, former romantic partner, no familial relation identified.

Her vision blurred.

"She's not your sister."

Daniel's face went completely still.

The records supervisor looked up.

Nathan stepped closer.

Claire held the page in both hands.

"Vanessa is not your sister."

Daniel did not deny it.

And in that moment, Claire understood why Vanessa had never behaved like family.

May you like

She had never been family at all.
