Danielle sank into a chair.
"I lied because I thought it was the only way to protect her."
Marcus remained silent.
Danielle wiped away her tears.
"Six years ago your wife was very sick."
Marcus's heart tightened.
"You were traveling constantly for work."
"Your wife asked me to care for Amara while she fought for her life."
Danielle paused.
"But she never came home."
Marcus closed his eyes.
He had buried his wife believing their unborn baby had died with her after a tragic medical emergency.
Danielle looked at Amara.
"Your daughter survived."
The room fell silent.
"I was terrified."
"There were people trying to take everything your wife owned."
"I believed hiding Amara was the only way to keep her safe."
Marcus struggled to breathe.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every bedtime story...
