# CHAPTER 20 — THE SIEGE

Armored vehicles broke through the north gate.
Men wearing unmarked black uniforms entered the estate grounds.
They moved with military precision.
They knew the guard rotations.
They knew the blind spots.
They knew which windows were reinforced and which doors were decorative.
Someone had given them the mansion’s complete security plan.
Bruno organized the defense from the underground command room.
Alejandro kept Mara and Emma beside him.
He would not allow the child out of sight again.
Michael Vale studied the camera feeds.
“That unit was trained at Black Harbor.”
“What is Black Harbor?” Lucia asked.
“A private facility Salvatore used for operations that could never appear in family records.”
“Who commanded it?”
Michael looked toward Matteo’s empty chair.
“Matteo founded it.”
Gunfire echoed above.
Bruno’s guards blocked the attackers at the eastern staircase.
Then the invading unit stopped.
Every man lowered his weapon at the exact same moment.
The mansion speakers activated.
A voice filled the command room.
“Alejandro, you have something that belongs to us.”
Alejandro pressed the microphone.
“Come inside and ask for it.”
“We are already inside.”
The command room doors locked automatically.
Gabriel moved to the control panel.
“I’ve lost access.”
Smoke began entering through the ventilation system.
Mara covered Emma’s mouth with her sleeve.
Dr. Reed, still restrained, shouted from the corner.
“It isn’t poison. It is sleeping gas.”
Bruno shot the electronic lock.
The door remained closed.
Michael pulled open a maintenance panel.
“There’s another passage.”
They entered as the gas thickened.
Dr. Reed nearly fell.
Alejandro considered leaving him.
Then Emma grabbed Reed’s sleeve.
“We don’t leave people who can’t breathe.”
Alejandro looked at her.
The child had saved him.
Now she was saving the man suspected of killing his wife.
Alejandro lifted Reed and carried him into the passage.
The tunnel led to an old chapel beneath the estate.
Candles were already burning.
Matteo stood before the altar.
He held no weapon.
Beside him sat Kiara.
Seven years old.
Alive.
Alejandro stopped.
The entire world narrowed to his daughter’s face.
Kiara looked exactly like the photograph.
Older.
Thinner.
Terrified.
“Papa?”
Alejandro took one step.
Matteo raised a hand.
“Do not come closer.”
“You took my daughter.”
“I kept her alive.”
“You let me bury another child.”
“It was the only way to make Salvatore’s enemies stop searching.”
“Salvatore is dead.”
Matteo looked toward the chapel entrance.
“No, Alejandro.”
A wheelchair rolled from the shadows.
An old man sat beneath a dark blanket.
His face was thinner.
His body weaker.
But Alejandro recognized his father.
Salvatore Moretti had supposedly died eighteen months earlier.
The old man opened his eyes.
“You were always difficult to kill,” he said.
# CHAPTER 21 — THE DEAD FATHER
Alejandro stared at the man in the wheelchair.
He remembered Salvatore’s funeral.
The closed coffin.
The private burial.
Matteo had handled every detail.
“You faked your death,” Alejandro said.
Salvatore smiled faintly.
“It allowed me to see which enemies celebrated.”
“And which family members fought over your chair,” Lucia said.
Salvatore looked at her.
“You disappointed me least.”
Lucia stepped forward.
“I will correct that.”
She raised her weapon.
Kiara screamed.
Matteo moved between them.
“Lower it.”
Alejandro did not take his eyes from his daughter.
“Come to me, Kiara.”
She started to rise.
Salvatore pressed a button on his chair.
A small device around Kiara’s wrist flashed red.
“If she crosses the line, the device injects a sedative.”
Mara pulled Emma against her.
“What kind of grandfather does that?”
“The kind who understands obedience.”
Emma stared at Salvatore.
“You’re mean.”
Salvatore looked at her as though noticing her for the first time.
“The rabbit child.”
“She has a name,” Alejandro said.
“Yes. Emma Carter. Daughter of the driver who stole Kiara.”
“Daniel saved her from you.”
“Daniel stole property that belonged to this family.”
“Kiara is not property.”
Salvatore’s eyes hardened.
“That belief is why you were never ready to lead.”
He explained the plan without shame.
Kiara’s disappearance had created grief.
Grief had made Alejandro unpredictable.
The family’s businesses weakened.
Salvatore intended to remove Alejandro, place Kiara under a controlled guardian, and rebuild the organization through her inheritance.
“Who poisoned me?” Alejandro asked.
Salvatore glanced at Dr. Reed.
Reed shook his head.
“I did not do it.”
“You always were a coward, Samuel,” Salvatore said.
Reed’s face turned pale.
Matteo looked toward the tunnels.
“The attackers are moving closer.”
Salvatore ignored him.
“The poison was not supposed to kill you immediately. It was supposed to create a medical emergency before 4:40.”
“Why?”
“To force Dr. Reed to declare you dead.”
Reed stared at him.
“I never agreed to that.”
“Your signature already had.”
The trust transfer would have activated electronically.
By the time anyone challenged the death certificate, control would have moved through hidden companies.
“To Gabriel?” Alejandro asked.
Salvatore laughed.
“Gabriel Moretti died as an infant.”
Everyone turned toward Gabriel Kane.
Salvatore looked at him with open contempt.
“You are the son of my accountant. Your mother invented the story to protect you.”
Gabriel’s face collapsed.
“Then who is the eldest son?”
Salvatore looked beyond Alejandro.
Bruno had entered the chapel without anyone hearing him.
Blood marked his sleeve.
Around his left wrist was a chain holding the original silver wolf cufflink.
Salvatore smiled.
“My firstborn.”
Bruno raised his weapon.
But instead of aiming at Alejandro, he pointed it at Salvatore.
“You should never have called me that.”
# CHAPTER 22 — THE FIRST WOLF
Salvatore looked amused.
“You still resent the truth.”
“You left my mother with nothing.”
“I gave you a place in this house.”
“As a guard.”
“As a son who could observe without being observed.”
Bruno’s weapon remained steady.
Alejandro remembered every moment Bruno had stood beside him.
Every threat Bruno had stopped.
Every secret he had protected.
All of it now carried another meaning.
“You knew Kiara was alive?” Alejandro asked.
Bruno’s eyes moved toward him.
“Not until six months ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I learned Salvatore was alive at the same time. I needed to find his entire network.”
“You allowed Emma to be placed in danger.”
“No.”
Bruno looked at the child.
“I changed the route to the pharmacy because I learned the bridge was compromised.”
“The lead vehicle crashed.”
“The driver was warned to jump before the brakes failed.”
Alejandro’s anger sharpened.
“You used them as bait.”
“I kept them alive.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Salvatore laughed.
“You see? He will never accept you. Blood does not matter to Alejandro unless it belongs to the daughter he lost.”
Bruno stepped closer to the wheelchair.
“Tell your men to leave.”
“They do not answer to me anymore.”
“Who commands them?”
Salvatore looked at Matteo.
Matteo lowered his eyes.
“Not me.”
A figure appeared on the chapel balcony.
Nico Bellini aimed a rifle downward.
“I command them.”
Lucia fired first.
Nico disappeared behind the stone railing.
The chapel erupted.
Matteo pulled Kiara behind the altar.
Bruno overturned Salvatore’s wheelchair.
Alejandro shielded Mara and Emma as bullets struck the walls.
Dr. Reed crawled toward Kiara.
He reached for the device on her wrist.
A shot hit the floor beside his hand.
“Don’t touch it!” Matteo shouted.
Reed examined the mechanism.
“This is not a sedative injector.”
“What is it?” Alejandro asked.
Reed’s face changed.
“It contains the same allergen used in your wine.”
Kiara had inherited Alejandro’s severe allergy.
The device could kill her within minutes.
Emma opened her rabbit backpack.
Mara saw what she was doing.
“No.”
Emma reached for one of the replacement EpiPens.
Dr. Reed had tested them after the attack.
Only one was genuine.
Emma held it tightly.
“She might need it.”
Mara’s eyes filled with fear.
“So might you.”
Emma looked at Kiara behind the altar.
“She doesn’t have a backpack.”
Before Mara could stop her, Emma crawled across the chapel floor.
Gunfire echoed above her.
Alejandro followed, covering her with his body.
Emma reached Kiara.
The two girls looked at each other.
Kiara’s wrist device began flashing faster.
A voice came through its speaker.
Nico’s voice.
“One child saved you, Alejandro.”
The injector needle began moving beneath Kiara’s skin.
“Now decide which child receives the final dose.”
# CHAPTER 23 — ONE DOSE
Dr. Reed tore open his medical bag.
“The device hasn’t released the allergen yet.”
“How long?” Alejandro asked.
“Seconds.”
Emma held the last working EpiPen.
Kiara stared at it.
“What is that?”
“It helps you breathe,” Emma said.
A red light turned solid on Kiara’s wrist.
The device clicked.
Kiara screamed.
Reed grabbed her arm.
“Now!”
Emma tried to give him the injector.
An explosion shook the balcony.
Stone fell between them.
The EpiPen slipped from Emma’s hand and rolled across the floor.
It stopped beneath Salvatore’s overturned wheelchair.
Salvatore reached for it.
Bruno placed his boot on the old man’s wrist.
“Don’t.”
“If Kiara dies, the trust changes again,” Salvatore said.
“To whom?”
Salvatore smiled through the pain.
“To Emma Carter.”
Mara stared at him.
“That makes no sense.”
“Daniel altered the trust while he controlled Kiara’s identity documents. He added Emma as a contingent beneficiary.”
“Why would he do that?”
“Because Daniel knew who Emma’s mother really was.”
Mara’s face became still.
“My mother died when I was ten.”
“No. The woman who raised you died.”
Salvatore looked toward Lucia.
“Tell her.”
Lucia shook her head.
“I don’t know what he means.”
“Yes, you do. Mara Carter is Sofia’s younger half sister.”
Alejandro looked at Mara.
Sofia had once told him her mother gave up a child before marriage.
He had never known the child’s name.
If Mara was Sofia’s sister, Emma was Kiara’s cousin.
A blood relative.
A possible heir under Daniel’s altered trust.
Kiara began gasping.
The allergic reaction had started.
Bruno kicked the wheelchair aside and grabbed the EpiPen.
He threw it toward Reed.
Reed caught it.
Orange to the thigh.
Press.
Count.
Kiara’s breathing remained tight.
Alejandro held his daughter while Reed counted to ten.
Emma knelt beside them.
“You have to breathe again,” she told Kiara.
For several seconds, Kiara did not move.
Then she pulled in a broken breath.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
Above them, Nico shouted through the speaker.
“How touching.”
The gunfire stopped.
The mansion became quiet.
Too quiet.
Gabriel checked his phone.
“All the attackers are withdrawing.”
Bruno looked toward Salvatore.
“Why?”
Salvatore’s expression had changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
A message appeared on every phone inside the chapel.
The same sentence.
SUCCESSION TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Alejandro looked at the clock.
It was exactly midnight.
“Who controls the trust now?” Lucia asked.
Gabriel searched the financial network.
The ownership files opened.
The name on the screen was not Kiara.
Not Emma.
Not Bruno.
Not Lucia.
The new legal owner of the Moretti empire was listed as:
DANIEL CARTER.
Mara looked toward the chapel door.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Her missing husband was holding a gun.
And it was aimed directly at Alejandro.
# CHAPTER 24 — THE HUSBAND WHO RETURNED
“Daniel,” Mara whispered.
He looked at her.
For one moment, the gun lowered.
Then he saw Emma.
His face broke.
“My baby.”
Emma stood slowly.
“Daddy?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
But he did not move toward her.
“Stay with your mother.”
“Where were you?”
“I was trying to come home.”
“For two years?”
Daniel looked toward Salvatore.
“I was kept inside Black Harbor.”
Salvatore laughed weakly from the floor.
“You worked there willingly.”
“At first.”
Alejandro positioned himself between Daniel and the girls.
“Why does the trust belong to you?”
“Because I changed it.”
“You had no legal authority.”
“I had Kiara’s identity records and Gabriel’s access codes.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“You stole them.”
“I borrowed what I needed.”
Mara stepped around Alejandro.
“Put the gun down.”
Daniel’s hand trembled.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“The transfer protects Emma. As long as I control the trust, they cannot kill me without freezing every Moretti company.”
“Who are they?”
Daniel looked toward Bruno.
“The first wolf.”
Bruno opened his jacket and showed the original cufflink.
“I am the first wolf.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You are the first son.”
He pointed toward the cufflink.
“The wolf is not a person. It is a council.”
Salvatore had created a hidden group within the family organization.
Seven members.
Each carried a wolf symbol.
They controlled judges, police officers, banks, hospitals, and private security units.
“They arranged Sofia’s death,” Daniel said. “They staged Kiara’s disappearance. They poisoned Alejandro. They created every version of the truth we have been chasing.”
“Who leads them?” Alejandro asked.
Daniel looked at Mara.
“I don’t know.”
Mara stared back at him.
“Why are you looking at me?”
“Because they knew your real identity before I did.”
Daniel lowered the weapon.
“I found Sofia’s family records. Your biological mother was Evelyn Rinaldi.”
Mara’s breath caught.
The Rinaldi family had been Moretti rivals for decades.
“Evelyn had two daughters,” Daniel continued. “Sofia was raised by her father. You were hidden with another family.”
Salvatore smiled.
“Now she understands.”
“Understands what?” Alejandro asked.
“Mara has Moretti blood through Sofia and Rinaldi blood through Evelyn. Her daughter can legally unite both trusts.”
Emma hugged her rabbit.
“I don’t want a trust.”
No one answered.
Daniel finally lowered the gun completely.
“I came to take Mara and Emma away.”
“You are not leaving,” Bruno said.
A red laser appeared on Daniel’s chest.
Then another appeared on Mara.
A third settled on Emma’s rabbit backpack.
Snipers surrounded the chapel.
The speaker activated again.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Daniel, you were told to bring the child alone.”
Mara recognized the voice.
She had heard it every day for seven months.
It belonged to the woman who had hired her at the Moretti mansion.
Teresa Vale.
# CHAPTER 25 — TERESA’S SECOND FACE
Teresa entered the chapel through the eastern tunnel.
Her wounded shoulder was wrapped in white bandages.
Two armed guards followed her.
Dr. Reed had left her unconscious upstairs.
Yet she now stood calmly beneath the altar lights.
Michael Vale stared at his mother.
“You said they forced you.”
“They did.”
“You said they threatened me.”
“They did that too.”
“Then why are you with them?”
Teresa looked at him with sadness.
“Because I have been part of the Wolf Council since before you were born.”
Michael backed away.
“You used me.”
“I protected you the only way I could.”
“By letting them lock me in a concrete room?”
“By making them believe you knew less than you did.”
Alejandro watched Teresa.
“Did you poison the wine?”
“I delivered the first vial. Dr. Reed replaced it with the real allergen.”
Reed shook his head.
“That is not true.”
Teresa removed a phone.
The screen showed footage of Reed opening the wine cabinet at 4:18 p.m.
He removed Teresa’s vial and placed another inside.
Everyone looked at him.
Reed’s face tightened.
“I replaced a sedative with saline.”
“Why?” Alejandro asked.
“Because I suspected Teresa was being forced. I wanted the wine harmless.”
Teresa smiled.
“And someone replaced your saline with poison.”
“Who?”
“That is the question keeping you alive.”
Teresa looked toward Emma.
“The forgotten camera was never forgotten. The Council used it for years.”
“Why leave the memory card?” Bruno asked.
“To begin the succession process.”
“You wanted us to find the footage.”
“We wanted Alejandro to distrust everyone closest to him.”
“And you succeeded,” Lucia said.
Teresa inclined her head.
“The Moretti family has always destroyed itself efficiently.”
Mara stepped in front of Emma.
“What do you want from my daughter?”
Teresa’s expression softened.
“Emma’s bloodline gives her access to accounts neither Moretti nor Rinaldi heirs can open alone.”
“She is four years old.”
“Exactly. Whoever controls her controls the transfer.”
Daniel raised his gun again.
Teresa’s snipers adjusted their lasers.
“Do not make this difficult,” Teresa warned.
“You already took two years from me.”
“I kept you alive for two years.”
Daniel looked at Mara.
“Take Emma and run when the lights go out.”
“What lights?”
Daniel pressed a device inside his sleeve.
The chapel went dark.
Gunfire erupted.
Mara grabbed Emma and ran toward the tunnel.
A hand caught her wrist.
She struck the person blindly.
“Mommy, it’s Kiara!” Emma shouted.
The two girls were together.
Alejandro appeared beside them.
“Move!”
They reached the servant passage as emergency lights returned.
Daniel did not follow.
Neither did Bruno.
Mara looked back.
Teresa stood near the altar.
Daniel lay on the floor at her feet.
Bruno was on his knees with a weapon pressed against his head.
Teresa looked directly toward Mara.
Then she said something Mara could not hear.
Emma could.
“She said the camera is inside my rabbit.”
# CHAPTER 26 — INSIDE THE RABBIT
They reached the lower tunnel.
Alejandro stopped beneath a maintenance light.
“Give me the rabbit.”
Emma held it tighter.
“My daddy gave it to me.”
“There may be a camera inside.”
“He said it keeps secrets.”
Mara knelt.
“Baby, we need to check it.”
Emma reluctantly handed over the stuffed rabbit.
Alejandro found a hard shape beneath its damaged ear.
He cut the stitching.
A camera lens fell into his palm.
Beside it was a small transmitter and a second memory chip.
Gabriel connected the chip to a portable reader.
The files were newer than the study footage.
The rabbit camera had recorded Emma’s life for nearly three years.
Mara’s apartment.
Emma’s clinic visits.
The babysitter.
The grocery store.
Every shift Mara had worked inside the Moretti mansion.
“They have watched my daughter every day,” Mara said.
Gabriel opened the final file.
It had been recorded that morning.
Mara knelt beside Emma in the staff room.
“This is your last spare, baby. Don’t take it out unless you can’t breathe.”
Teresa stood outside the partially open door, listening.
A second person appeared behind her.
Only an arm entered the frame.
The person handed Teresa a vial.
A distinctive green gemstone flashed on one finger.
Lucia leaned closer.
“That is an Ashford emerald.”
The Ashford family had controlled New York banking for generations.
Their matriarch, Eleanor Ashford, had been Sofia’s godmother.
She had also financed the hospital where Sofia died.
Alejandro remembered Eleanor attending Kiara’s funeral.
She had held his hand and told him grief would eventually become useful.
Gabriel searched financial records.
“The Wolf Council transferred forty million dollars to an Ashford foundation tonight.”
“Where is Eleanor now?” Alejandro asked.
“At the Moretti charity gala,” Lucia said.
Alejandro stared at her.
“What gala?”
Lucia checked her phone.
A public fundraising event was being held at the Moretti Museum.
Hundreds of guests were present.
The event had not been canceled because the outside world still believed Alejandro was merely ill.
A live news feed showed Eleanor Ashford standing onstage.
Behind her was a giant portrait of Kiara.
Eleanor raised a glass.
“Tonight,” she announced, “the Moretti family enters a new era.”
The audience applauded.
A young girl walked onto the stage wearing a white dress.
She looked exactly like Kiara.
The real Kiara stood beside Alejandro in the tunnel.
“Who is that?” she asked.
Eleanor placed one hand on the false child’s shoulder.
“Ladies and gentlemen, after years of secrecy, I present Kiara Moretti—the rightful heir to the Moretti legacy.”
The audience rose.
Alejandro watched in disbelief.
The Wolf Council was not merely stealing his empire.
They were replacing his daughter with another child.
Then the camera moved closer.
The false Kiara looked into the lens.
Emma gasped.
“I know her.”
Mara turned.
“From where?”
“She was in my doctor’s office yesterday.”
# CHAPTER 27 — THE OTHER KIARA
The Moretti Museum was surrounded by private security.
Eleanor Ashford continued her speech while cameras broadcast the false Kiara to the entire city.
“She was hidden for her protection,” Eleanor said. “Tonight, she returns to complete her grandfather’s vision.”
Alejandro watched from an armored SUV several blocks away.
The real Kiara sat beside him under Mara’s coat.
Emma held her hand.
Lucia examined photographs of the child onstage.
“She resembles Kiara.”
“Not enough to fool anyone who knew her,” Alejandro said.
“She only needs to fool a court.”
Gabriel opened the medical file Emma remembered seeing at the clinic.
The child’s name was Clara Reed.
Dr. Samuel Reed’s granddaughter.
Reed stared at the screen.
“My granddaughter died two years ago.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Someone has been using her identity.”
Reed’s hands shook.
“My son told me the burial was private.”
Alejandro understood.
Another closed coffin.
Another family prevented from seeing a body.
The Wolf Council had created a collection of dead children who were not dead.
Eleanor Ashford had access to hospitals, records, and adoption systems.
“How many?” Mara asked.
Gabriel searched the Black Harbor ledger recovered from Michael.
Twenty-seven names appeared.
Children from powerful families.
Children reported dead, missing, or adopted abroad.
Beside each name was a financial account.
“They built heirs,” Lucia whispered.
“They built replacements,” Alejandro said.
The museum broadcast shifted.
Eleanor asked the false Kiara to sign a ceremonial document.
If witnessed publicly, the signature could support an emergency petition transferring the Moretti trust.
“We need to stop the signing,” Bruno’s voice said through the radio.
Alejandro froze.
Bruno was supposed to be Teresa’s prisoner.
“Where are you?”
“Inside the museum.”
“What happened to Daniel?”
“Alive. Injured. Teresa took him.”
“Can you reach Eleanor?”
“Not without exposing myself.”
Kiara pulled the radio from Alejandro’s hand.
“Uncle Bruno?”
Bruno became silent.
“You knew I was alive,” Kiara said.
“For six months.”
“You didn’t tell my papa.”
“I was trying to keep you safe.”
Kiara’s eyes filled.
“That’s what everyone says.”
She handed the radio back.
Onstage, Eleanor gave the false Kiara a gold pen.
Alejandro opened the SUV door.
Mara grabbed his arm.
“They expect you to go inside.”
“I know.”
“That means there is another trap.”
“There is always another trap.”
Emma looked at the museum screen.
The false Kiara was not signing.
She was drawing something on the paper.
The cameras zoomed in.
The girl had drawn a rabbit.
Beneath it, she wrote:
EMMA, HELP ME.
The false Kiara looked directly into the broadcast camera.
Then she mouthed three silent words.
THE DOCTOR KNOWS.
Everyone turned toward Dr. Reed.
Reed stared at the child.
“I know where they trained her.”
# CHAPTER 28 — BLACK HARBOR
Dr. Reed led them to an abandoned hospital beneath the East River.
Black Harbor had been built as a wartime medical facility and later purchased through Ashford shell companies.
“The Council brought children here,” Reed said. “They changed their records, appearances, and memories.”
“You worked here?” Mara asked.
“I treated them.”
“You treated kidnapped children?”
“I was told their families wanted them hidden.”
“For how long did you believe that?”
Reed did not answer.
The underground halls smelled of disinfectant and rust.
Emma stayed between Mara and Kiara.
The girls had stopped speaking.
Every door displayed a number instead of a name.
Room 17 contained photographs of Kiara at different ages.
Room 18 contained photographs of Emma.
Mara covered her mouth.
The Council had measured Emma’s height, recorded her allergies, and copied her school records.
A schedule on the wall listed her daily routine.
“She was never safe,” Mara whispered.
Alejandro tore the papers down.
Gabriel found a surveillance terminal.
The system displayed live feeds from the museum, the Moretti mansion, and several hidden rooms.
One screen showed Teresa holding Daniel inside a medical chamber.
Another showed Bruno moving through the museum’s lower level.
A third showed Eleanor backstage with the false Kiara.
“Can you open the doors remotely?” Alejandro asked.
Gabriel typed commands.
“Most of the system is locked.”
Emma walked toward the final screen.
A woman sat alone inside a white room.
Her gray hair fell over her shoulders.
Gabriel stopped breathing.
“Mother?”
The woman looked older than the video Gabriel had received, but she was alive.
A label beneath the screen read:
SUBJECT EVELYN KANE.
Mara stared at the name.
Evelyn.
The same first name Salvatore had given for Mara’s biological mother.
Gabriel looked at Mara.
“That cannot be a coincidence.”
The woman in the room lifted her head.
She faced the camera as though she could see them.
Then she spoke.
The terminal had no audio, but Gabriel read her lips.
Mara.
She knew Mara’s name.
Gabriel found an intercom control.
“Can you hear us?”
The woman rushed toward the camera.
“Mara, listen to me. Sofia was not your sister.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Who was she?”
“Your mother.”
The room became silent.
Evelyn continued.
“Sofia gave birth to you when she was sixteen. Salvatore forced the family to hide you.”
Mara shook her head.
“That would make Emma—”
“Kiara’s niece,” Lucia finished.
Evelyn pressed both hands against the glass.
“But that is not why they need her.”
Alarms began flashing across the terminal.
The hospital doors started locking.
Gabriel shouted through the intercom.
“Why do they need Emma?”
Evelyn looked behind her.
Someone was entering the white room.
She turned back quickly.
“Because Emma is the only child who can identify the real leader of the Wolf Council.”
“How?”
“She has already seen him.”
The feed went black.
Every hallway light turned red.
From the darkness behind them, Emma whispered, “The man from the bridge is here.”
# CHAPTER 29 — THE MAN WITH THE HOSPITAL BRACELET
The false police officer stepped into the red light.
The hospital bracelet still circled his wrist.
He removed his cap.
A long scar crossed the side of his head.
Alejandro raised his weapon.
The man did not.
“My name is Thomas Reed.”
Dr. Reed nearly collapsed.
“Thomas?”
The man looked at him.
“Hello, Father.”
Reed’s son had supposedly died with his daughter two years earlier.
Another closed funeral.
Another fabricated death.
“You’re alive,” Reed whispered.
Thomas’s expression remained empty.
“You signed the papers that gave them Clara.”
“I thought she was dead.”
“You signed before the accident.”
Reed shook his head.
Thomas threw a document onto the floor.
Reed’s signature authorized Clara’s placement inside the Black Harbor protection program.
“They told me the Council would protect her,” Reed admitted.
“You traded your granddaughter for your debts.”
The false Kiara onstage was Clara Reed.
Dr. Reed had known she entered the program, but not what had happened afterward.
Thomas looked toward Emma.
“She saw me at the clinic because I was sent to switch her EpiPens.”
Mara stepped in front of her daughter.
“Why didn’t you?”
Thomas looked at Emma.
“She smiled at me.”
Emma remembered.
The sad man in the clinic hallway had dropped a box.
She had picked it up for him.
“I could not poison a child who still believed adults were good,” Thomas said.
“Then why attack the SUV?” Alejandro asked.
“I fired at the window to make the guards leave the bridge. Another team was waiting ahead.”
Bruno’s route change had saved them.
“What do you know about the Council leader?” Lucia asked.
Thomas looked toward Dr. Reed.
“The leader never appears without a mask. But Emma saw him once without it.”
“When?” Mara asked.
“The night Daniel brought her to St. Michael’s Church.”
Emma had been two.
She could barely remember the church.
Thomas removed a photograph.
It showed Daniel carrying Emma through a side entrance.
Matteo stood beside him.
A third man waited near the altar.
His face was turned from the camera.
Only part of his profile was visible.
Emma took the photograph.
“That’s not a man.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What do you mean?” Alejandro asked.
“She had long hair under the hat.”
“A woman?” Lucia asked.
Emma nodded.
“She gave Daddy the rabbit.”
Mara looked at the stuffed rabbit.
Daniel had not bought it.
The Council leader had given it to Emma.
A tracking device disguised as a gift.
Thomas moved toward the terminal.
“We need to release the white-room doors before the system floods the lower level.”
“Floods?” Gabriel asked.
Water began pouring beneath the corridor doors.
Black Harbor’s destruction system had activated.
Thomas entered a code.
The screen displayed a security question:
IDENTIFY THE FIRST WOLF.
He looked at Emma.
“The system uses facial recognition. She must choose the person she remembers.”
Seven photographs appeared.
Salvatore.
Bruno.
Matteo.
Teresa.
Eleanor Ashford.
Lucia.
And Mara.
Emma stared at the final photograph.
Mara’s face went white.
“Why am I there?”
Emma slowly raised her finger.
She did not point at Mara.
She pointed at Eleanor Ashford.
“That’s the lady from the church.”
Gabriel selected Eleanor.
ACCESS DENIED.
The water rose above their ankles.
A message appeared.
ELEANOR ASHFORD IS NOT THE FIRST WOLF.
Emma looked at the photographs again.
Then she pointed at Lucia.
“She was there too.”
# CHAPTER 30 — THE FACE EMMA REMEMBERED
Lucia stared at Emma.
“I have never met you before today.”
Emma stepped behind Mara.
“You had a red coat.”
Lucia shook her head.
“I did not know Daniel Carter.”
“You sang the rabbit song.”
Mara looked toward Lucia.
“What rabbit song?”
Emma hummed the same melody from the voicemail sent through Kiara’s old school.
The lullaby Alejandro had believed belonged only to his family.
Lucia’s expression changed.
“Our mother sang that song to us.”
“How would Emma know it?” Alejandro asked.
“I don’t know.”
The water rose rapidly.
Gabriel had seconds to enter another identity.
“Emma, are you certain it was Lucia?”
The little girl studied the photograph.
“No.”
Lucia released a breath.
“She looked like her.”
“Who looked like her?”
“The lady with the red coat.”
Emma pointed toward Mara’s photograph.
“She looked like Mommy too.”
Mara and Lucia shared similar dark eyes.
So had Sofia.
So did Kiara.
The Council leader might belong to the same bloodline.
Gabriel opened the white-room feed again.
Evelyn Kane was pounding on the locked glass.
Behind her stood a woman wearing a red coat.
Her face remained outside the camera frame.
Alejandro spoke into the intercom.
“Turn around.”
The woman did not move.
Gabriel increased the volume.
“Turn around!”
She slowly faced the camera.
Mara stumbled backward.
The woman had Mara’s eyes.
Sofia’s mouth.
Lucia’s cheekbones.
She appeared younger than Evelyn but older than Lucia.
Alejandro had seen her only once before.
At Sofia’s funeral.
She had introduced herself as a distant cousin from Boston.
“Who is she?” Bruno asked through the radio.
Evelyn answered from inside the room.
“Her name is Victoria Rinaldi.”
Mara’s biological family had not produced two daughters.
There had been three.
Sofia.
Victoria.
And the child Sofia secretly gave birth to—Mara.
Victoria looked directly into the camera.
“You were not supposed to remember me, Emma.”
Emma gripped Mara’s hand.
“You gave me my rabbit.”
Victoria smiled.
“I gave you much more than that.”
On the museum feed, Eleanor Ashford suddenly stepped away from the false Kiara.
Bruno appeared behind her and pressed a weapon against her back.
The signing ceremony stopped.
At the same moment, Teresa’s chamber opened.
Daniel pushed through the door.
The Black Harbor system began unlocking.
Gabriel selected Victoria’s hidden profile.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The water stopped rising.
Every door opened.
Except the white room.
Victoria placed one hand on Evelyn’s shoulder.
“You found the first wolf,” she said. “But you still do not understand the pack.”
A second screen activated.
It showed Kiara’s hidden apartment inside the Moretti mansion.
Someone was standing there.
Matteo Serra.
He held the original missing drive from the forgotten camera.
“Alejandro,” Matteo said into the lens, “the footage you watched was edited.”
Gabriel froze.
“All of it?”
“The person poisoning the wine was not wearing Bruno’s cufflink. The ring was not Lucia’s. Teresa was never being forced.”
Teresa appeared behind Matteo.
No wound marked her shoulder now.
The bandages had been staged.
Michael Vale stood beside her.
He was smiling.
Mara realized he had never been a prisoner either.
Matteo held up the original drive.
“This contains the unedited recording of the study, Sofia’s death, Kiara’s disappearance, and Daniel’s first agreement with the Council.”
Daniel entered the hospital corridor behind Mara.
He heard Matteo’s final words.
His face turned pale.
Mara looked at her husband.
“What agreement?”
Daniel did not answer.
Emma moved away from him.
“Daddy?”
The screen changed.
The original footage began playing.
At 4:21 p.m., someone entered Alejandro’s study without a hood.
Daniel Carter.
He placed the allergen beside the wineglass.
Then he looked directly into the forgotten camera.
“I’m sorry, Emma,” he whispered. “But Alejandro has to die so you can inherit what they stole from your mother.”
Mara turned toward him.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Not at Alejandro.
Not at Lucia.
At Victoria Rinaldi behind the locked glass.
“You wanted the truth,” Daniel said.
Victoria smiled from the other side.
“No, Daniel.”
The lights above them began shutting off one by one.
“I wanted you to bring Emma home.”
A final door opened at the end of the corridor.
Beyond it stood dozens of children wearing white hospital clothes.
Each child carried a rabbit backpack identical to Emma’s.
One little girl stepped forward.
She looked exactly like Emma.
Same pale face.
Same hazel eyes.
Same age.
She held an unused EpiPen in her hand.
Mara could barely speak.
“Who is that?”
Victoria’s voice came through every speaker in Black Harbor.
“That is the child Daniel was supposed to take home four years ago.”
Emma looked up at Mara.
“Mommy?”
The identical girl raised the injector.

Then every alarm in the facility began screaming.
