# CHAPTER 19 — THE EMPTY BACKPACK

Every gate remained locked.
Every guard claimed no one had passed.
Yet Emma had vanished from the center of the estate.
Mara ran through the entrance hall calling her daughter’s name.
Alejandro ordered the mansion searched room by room.
Bruno checked camera feeds.
For seventeen seconds, every interior camera had displayed the same empty hallway.
Someone had looped the system.
Gabriel denied controlling it.
“Only the master terminal can override all cameras at once.”
“Where is the master terminal?” Alejandro asked.
“Inside Bruno’s office.”
Bruno looked at the screen.
“I was outside with all of you.”
“Who has your access code?”
“No one.”
Gabriel opened the access log.
The override had been authorized with Bruno’s fingerprint.
Bruno held up his hands.
“Someone copied it.”
Mara seized his jacket.
“You were supposed to protect her.”
Alejandro pulled her away.
“We will find Emma.”
“You don’t get to promise me that. You failed to find your own daughter for three years.”
The words struck harder than the slap.
Alejandro accepted them.
Then he saw something beneath the rabbit backpack.
A trail of cereal crumbs led toward the western corridor.
Emma’s emergency snack.
She had dropped the pieces deliberately.
“Emma is showing us the way,” Mara whispered.
They followed the trail.
It ended at a linen closet.
Behind the shelves was another service passage.
The tunnel descended beneath the mansion.
At the bottom, they found Emma sitting on a wooden crate.
She was not tied.
A masked man held a gun behind her.
“Stop,” he ordered.
Alejandro froze.
The man removed his mask.
Michael Vale.
Teresa’s missing son.
His face matched the photograph from the hidden apartment.
Mara moved toward Emma.
Michael raised the gun.
“Stay back.”
Emma looked at her mother.
“I’m okay.”
“Why did you take her?” Alejandro asked.
“To get her out before the real attack begins.”
“You threatened her medicine.”
“No. The people holding me did.”
“Who?”
Michael looked toward Bruno.
“The Moretti security division.”
Bruno’s expression did not change.
Michael continued.
“Not all of them. A private unit created by Salvatore. They answer to the person wearing the first wolf.”
“The first wolf?” Alejandro asked.
“Bruno’s cufflinks were copies. Salvatore gave the original pair to his eldest son.”
Everyone turned toward Gabriel.
Gabriel shook his head.
“I never received them.”
Michael lowered the gun slightly.
“Then someone else is using your name.”
A deep explosion shook the tunnel.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The estate alarms began screaming.
Bruno’s radio filled with overlapping voices.
“Eastern gate breached!”
“Multiple vehicles!”
“Guards down at the north wall!”
Michael grabbed Emma and pushed her toward Mara.
“They are not coming to kill Alejandro.”
“What do they want?” Mara asked.
May you like
Michael looked at the empty coffin visible through the tunnel entrance.
“They are coming to bury the wrong child again.”
