# CHAPTER 11 — LOCKER 317

Grand Central Terminal was crowded despite the late hour.
Commuters moved beneath the painted constellations while Moretti guards spread through the station in ordinary coats.
Mara held Emma’s hand.
The rabbit backpack remained against her daughter’s shoulders.
Alejandro walked several feet ahead, surrounded by Bruno and two guards.
Locker 317 was hidden in an older baggage corridor no longer open to the public.
Bruno’s men cleared the area.
Alejandro inserted the brass key.
The lock clicked.
Inside sat a pink metal box.
Kiara’s name had been painted across the lid in faded white letters.
Alejandro recognized it.
The box had once held his daughter’s crayons.
His hands became unsteady as he opened it.
Inside was a pink ribbon.
A wooden music box.
A sealed envelope.
And a photograph.
The picture showed a girl standing beside a lake.
She appeared to be seven years old.
Dark hair.
Moretti eyes.
A small scar above her left eyebrow from the day Kiara had fallen while chasing a butterfly.
The photograph had been taken recently.
Alejandro sat down on the cold floor.
For three years, he had trained himself not to imagine the impossible.
Now the impossible was looking back at him.
Emma knelt beside him.
“Is that your little girl?”
“Yes.”
“She got bigger.”
Alejandro swallowed.
“Yes.”
Mara opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a letter written in Daniel’s handwriting.
Mara,
I am sorry.
I found Kiara alive after the crash. Salvatore’s people intended to keep her hidden until Alejandro either signed away control or died.
I moved her before they could complete the plan.
I trusted one person inside the Moretti house.
That was my greatest mistake.
The letter ended there.
The second page had been torn away.
Bruno searched the box.
“There’s no name.”
Emma lifted the music box.
A melody began playing.
The same lullaby from Lucia’s voicemail.
A hidden compartment opened beneath the rotating ballerina.
Inside was a burner phone.
It rang.
Alejandro answered.
At first, neither side spoke.
Then a girl whispered, “Papa?”
Alejandro closed his eyes.
“Kiara?”
The child began crying.
Not loudly.
As though she had learned to hide the sound.
“Papa, they said you were dead.”
“I’m alive.”
“Is Emma with you?”
Alejandro looked at the four-year-old girl.
“How do you know Emma?”
“Daniel showed me her picture.”
“Where are you?”
A door slammed on the other end.
Kiara’s breathing became fast.
“Papa, don’t trust the doctor.”
The line went dead.
Everyone looked at Dr. Reed, who had insisted on accompanying them because of Emma’s medical condition.
Reed slowly raised his hands.
“I have never spoken to that child.”
Bruno drew his weapon.
Reed’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared on the screen.
It contained a photograph of Reed entering the Moretti study at 4:21 p.m.
Two minutes before the hooded figure appeared on the forgotten camera.
