Chapter 19 - PIER SEVENTEEN

Rain had begun again by the time they reached the Seaport.

Pier Seventeen sat beyond a row of shuttered warehouses, separated from the road by rusting gates and a chain-link fence.

State Police vehicles waited two blocks away with their lights dark.

Judge Alvarez's warrants had arrived electronically seven minutes earlier.

Chen had been temporarily reinstated as a cooperating investigator by an Internal Affairs commander who apparently believed bureaucracy could wait until morning.

Rourke was transported under guard to a secure medical unit.

Morrison stayed with Noah.

Adrian insisted on coming.

Gabriel objected.

Adrian ignored him.

Harper had begun to suspect stubbornness was hereditary even when blood was not.

Derek's stolen sedan sat outside the main warehouse.

Driver door open.

No sign of Paul Mercer.

No sign of Derek.

Chen studied the building plans Elias had provided.

"State team enters north."

"We stay here."

Gabriel looked at her.

"That was not our agreement."

"There was no agreement."

"I distinctly remember you saying fine."

"I was under emotional distress."

Harper stared at him.

"You cannot use that line whenever someone holds you accountable."

Gabriel glanced at her.

"I learned it from lawyers."

Chen pointed at both of them.

"If you are going to flirt, do it somewhere without snipers."

Harper's face heated.

"We are not flirting."

Adrian murmured,

"Tragic."

Gabriel looked at him.

"I can still change my mind about shooting you."

Chen closed her eyes.

"I miss working alone."

A gunshot came from inside the warehouse.

Everyone stopped joking.

Another shot followed.

Then silence.

The state tactical team moved.

Harper waited beside an armored vehicle because she had promised Chen she would.

For ninety seconds, she kept the promise.

Then her phone rang.

Derek.

She answered.

"Where are you?"

His breathing was ragged.

"Inside."

"Are you hurt?"

"Not worse."

"Where is Malcolm?"

"Vault level."

"Hale?"

"Alive."

A metallic slam sounded behind him.

"Harper, listen to me."

"I am listening."

"Mercer sold me out."

"That is shocking."

"Not now."

"Everyone keeps saying that when they do not like what I say."

Derek exhaled hard.

"Malcolm has a second exit under the dock."

"Tell Chen."

"He is monitoring police channels."

"Then tell me where."

A pause.

"Only if you come in."

Harper went cold.

"No."

"I need the copied drive."

There it was.

Even now.

"You are still bargaining."

"I need leverage."

"Against Malcolm?"

"Against everyone."

Harper closed her eyes.

Derek had not changed.

He had only become more frightened.

"No."

"Harper."

"You warned me about the gala because you wanted me alive."

"Yes."

"You told me where Noah was because Malcolm shot you."

"Yes."

"You helped because it benefited you."

Silence.

"Yes."

Harper looked through the rain at the warehouse.

"Then for once, do something because it is right."

Derek laughed weakly.

"You still think people work like that."

"I have to."

"Why?"

"Because if everyone is only the worst thing they have done, then I wasted three years surviving you just to become you."

Derek said nothing.

Harper's voice softened.

"Tell me where the tunnel is."

A long pause.

Then he did.

"South wall."

"Blue freight elevator."

"Basement two."

"Behind the old generator room."

Harper immediately repeated it to Chen.

The tactical commander redirected a team.

"Stay outside," Chen said.

Harper nodded.

This time she meant it.

Inside the warehouse, Gabriel moved with the second team through a corridor he remembered from childhood.

William Ashford had brought him there twice.

Once to teach him how shipments entered without records.

Once to teach him never to ask what was inside certain crates.

Gabriel had spent years believing knowledge made him powerful.

Tonight every hidden room felt like another debt inherited from men who had mistaken secrecy for strength.

They found Paul Mercer dead beside the freight elevator.

Malcolm had shot him once in the chest.

Derek's blood trail continued down the stairs.

Gabriel followed.

The vault level smelled of rust and seawater.

A reinforced steel door stood open.

Inside, Deputy Commissioner Hale sat tied to a chair.

His face was bruised.

Malcolm stood beside a table covered in files.

Derek knelt several feet away with a gun pointed at the back of his head.

Gabriel stopped at the doorway.

"Malcolm."

Malcolm smiled.

"There you are."

Derek looked up.

"You should have stayed at the hotel."

Gabriel's eyes moved to his former operations chief.

"You spent fourteen years at my table."

"Fifteen, if we count the year your father paid me to watch you."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"You knew Thomas was investigating you."

"Thomas investigated everyone."

"You ordered Rourke to kill him."

Malcolm's expression remained calm.

"I ordered Rourke to stop him."

"With bullets."

"Rourke lacked imagination."

Derek laughed bitterly from the floor.

"Listen to him."

"He still cannot admit anything plainly."

Malcolm pressed the gun against Derek's head.

"You are in no position to critique language."

Hale struggled against his restraints.

"You are finished, Malcolm."

Malcolm looked at him.

"You said that seven years ago."

"And yet you kept cashing my checks."

Hale's face twisted.

"I protected you."

"You protected yourself."

Malcolm opened one of the files.

"Just as William protected himself."

"Just as Adrian did."

"Just as Rourke did."

He smiled.

"The only person foolish enough to choose truth over survival was Thomas."

Gabriel's voice turned cold.

"And that is why you were afraid of him."

The smile vanished.

"I was never afraid of Thomas."

"You killed him."

"Because he was annoying."

"No."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Because he saw you."

Malcolm's eyes sharpened.

"He saw that you were not smarter than everyone."

"You were simply standing where everyone trusted you."

For the first time, Malcolm looked angry.

Derek saw it.

Harper would have seen it too.

Gabriel understood why Derek had survived Malcolm this long.

He knew when pride created an opening.

Derek moved suddenly.

He drove his shoulder into Malcolm's knees.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Gabriel lunged.

Hale threw himself sideways in the chair.

Files scattered.

Malcolm kicked Derek in the wounded shoulder.

Derek screamed.

Gabriel struck Malcolm across the jaw.

Malcolm fell against the table.

A second gun appeared in his hand.

He fired.

Gabriel turned.

The bullet tore through his coat but missed his body.

State officers entered the corridor.

"Drop the weapon!"

Malcolm grabbed Hale by the collar and dragged him toward the rear door.

"Back up!"

Hale shouted,

"Shoot him!"

Malcolm laughed.

"Still thinking only about yourself."

He disappeared through the tunnel with Hale.

Gabriel started after them.

A hand caught his ankle.

Derek.

"Wait."

Gabriel looked down.

"Give me one reason."

Derek coughed.

"The tunnel forks."

"Left goes to the dock."

"Right goes under the old fuel room."

"Which one?"

"Malcolm will take right."

"Why?"

"Because there is a car exit."

Gabriel pulled his ankle free.

"If you are lying-"

"I am too tired to be creative."

Gabriel went right.

Outside, Harper saw movement near the water.

A steel hatch lifted beside the dock.

Hale appeared first, stumbling into the rain.

Malcolm followed with a gun against his neck.

Harper shouted to Chen.

"There!"

Officers turned.

Malcolm fired toward them.

Everyone dropped behind vehicles.

Hale broke free and ran.

Malcolm shot him in the leg.

Hale fell screaming.

Malcolm ran toward a waiting speedboat.

Adrian stepped from behind a cargo container.

"Going somewhere?"

Malcolm stopped.

The two older men faced each other across twenty feet of rain.

"Adrian."

"You killed my nephew."

Malcolm smiled.

"Your nephew would still be alive if you had chosen family over business."

Adrian's face tightened.

"Do not make my cowardice your innocence."

Malcolm raised his weapon.

Gabriel emerged from the hatch behind him.

"Drop it."

Malcolm turned slightly.

Now Gabriel stood behind him.

Adrian in front.

State Police to his left.

Harbor water to his right.

For the first time all night, Malcolm had nowhere to rearrange the truth.

He smiled anyway.

"Do you really think arresting me changes anything?"

Gabriel said,

"No."

"But it changes tomorrow."

Malcolm's finger tightened on the trigger.

Harper saw it from behind the vehicle.

She also saw Derek emerge from the warehouse door.

He had found another gun.

His face was gray.

His wounded arm hung uselessly.

The weapon was in his right hand.

He aimed at Malcolm.

"Derek, no!" Harper shouted.

Everyone turned for half a second.

Malcolm fired.

Derek fired.

Adrian ducked.

Gabriel lunged sideways.

Malcolm's bullet struck a metal post.

Derek's shot hit Malcolm in the thigh.

Malcolm collapsed.

State officers rushed him.

Derek lowered his gun.

Then his eyes found Harper.

For one second, she thought he would surrender.

Instead, he grabbed her.

The gun pressed against her ribs.

The entire dock froze.

Gabriel's face became something Harper had never seen.

Not anger.

Terror.

"Let her go."

Derek backed toward the water with Harper against him.

"Nobody moves."

Chen raised her weapon.

"Lawson, it is over."

"No."

His breath shook against Harper's hair.

"Not for me."

Harper looked at Gabriel.

He lowered his weapon slowly.

"What do you want?"

Derek laughed.

"You know."

Gabriel's voice went flat.

"Say it."

Derek tightened his arm around Harper.

"A car."

"Cash."

"And the drive."

Harper closed her eyes.

Even now, he believed another transaction could rebuild his world.

Gabriel said,

"Done."

Harper opened her eyes.

"No."

Derek jerked the gun against her side.

"Be quiet."

The words were familiar.

So familiar that something inside Harper became completely calm.

She looked at Gabriel.

"Do not give him anything."

"Harper."

"Do not."

Derek's voice cracked.

"I said shut up."

Harper did not.

"This is the last time you tell me that."

She drove her heel down on his injured foot and twisted exactly the way a self-defense counselor at the charity clinic had shown her two years earlier.

Derek shouted.

The gun shifted.

Harper trapped his wrist against her body and dropped her weight.

The shot went into the dock.

Gabriel moved.

So did Chen.

Derek lost his grip.

Harper tore free.

Gabriel slammed Derek against the railing.

His hand closed around Derek's throat.

Derek's face reddened.

Harper saw exactly where the next second could go.

"Gabriel."

He did not respond.

"Gabriel."

His grip tightened.

Harper stepped closer.

"If you kill him for me, he still gets to decide what kind of man you become tonight."

Gabriel froze.

Derek gasped beneath his hand.

Harper continued.

"Let him live with the truth in a room where he cannot rewrite it."

Gabriel looked at her.

Rain ran down his face.

Slowly, he released Derek.

Chen moved in and handcuffed him.

This time Harper watched the metal close around Derek's wrists.

He looked at her as if he expected something.

Mercy.

Hatred.

Fear.

She gave him none of them.

"You left me," he whispered.

Harper met his eyes.

"Yes."

Then she turned away.

Behind her, Malcolm was being loaded onto a stretcher under guard.

Hale was receiving medical treatment with an officer standing over him.

Adrian helped Morrison across the wet dock after she arrived with Elias.

Noah ran toward Harper.

She dropped to her knees and caught him.

Gabriel stood a few feet away, breathing hard.

Harper looked at him over Noah's shoulder.

For the first time since the bathroom door opened, no one was chasing them.

Then Chen approached with a phone in her hand.

"Harper."

"What now?"

Chen almost smiled.

"Your mother's recorder."

Harper's heart tightened.

"What about it?"

"The digital copy has a second audio track we missed."

"Hidden?"

"Encrypted."

"Can you open it?"

Chen held out the phone.

"Already did."

Mara Queen's voice began to play in the rain.

"Harper, if you are hearing this, then you finally know why I was afraid of Derek Lawson."

Harper stopped breathing.

Mara continued.

"But there is one truth I hope you learn before anything else."

"The person who saves you is not automatically the person who owns the rest of your life."

Harper looked at Gabriel.

His eyes met hers.

Mara's voice softened.

May you like

"Real love does not close the door behind you."

"It hands you the key."
