Chapter 17 - THE GALA OF GLASS

The Ashford Foundation Gala began at eight o'clock in the Grand Harbor Hotel.
By seven thirty, four hundred guests had already passed through the glass atrium.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business owners.
Police officials.
Television anchors.
Donors who liked being photographed beside expensive causes.
Half the city people claimed Gabriel controlled was gathering beneath one roof.
That was exactly why Malcolm had chosen it.
Gabriel stood in the tugboat chapel with his phone against his ear, listening to the head of gala security describe a staff list that had changed three times in the last hour.
"Cancel the event," Harper said.
Gabriel shook his head.
"Too late."
"People can leave."
"And Malcolm disappears with the panic."
"I care more about innocent people than catching Malcolm tonight."
"So do I."
Gabriel ended the call.
"That is why we do not announce a threat we cannot define."
Harper stared at him.
"You sound very comfortable making decisions for four hundred people."
"I am comfortable making decisions when hesitation gets people killed."
"And I am comfortable telling you that confidence is not the same as being right."
Adrian Vale, standing near the chapel door, gave a low laugh.
"Now I understand why Malcolm failed to predict her."
Gabriel looked at him.
"You are still here because your sister asked me not to shoot you."
Morrison sighed.
"Could both of you postpone the family dysfunction until after we find the murderer?"
Adrian and Gabriel looked away from each other like boys caught fighting in church.
Noah sat on a pew with Elias beside him.
Harper had refused to leave the boy out of sight until a secure location was chosen.
Chen called at 7:36.
Her voice sounded rushed.
"I found Derek's ambulance."
"Where?" Gabriel asked.
"Abandoned under the Tobin Bridge."
"Bodies?"
"Driver is alive."
"One EMT is injured."
"Second EMT was not an EMT."
Harper frowned.
"Malcolm's man?"
"Looks that way."
Chen continued.
"Derek escaped during the attack."
"By himself?"
"Driver says Lawson bit through part of the restraint strap, grabbed the fake medic's weapon, and ran."
Harper stared at the floor.
She had spent years seeing Derek as unbeatable because he had built the world around himself.
Now she saw him differently.
Dangerous, yes.
But cornered.
And cornered men were unpredictable.
"The blood message?"
"His."
Chen paused.
"He wrote it before running."
"Why warn us?"
Gabriel looked at Harper.
"He was not warning us."
"He was warning her."
Harper's stomach tightened.
"Do not romanticize it."
"I am not."
Gabriel's expression stayed hard.
"Lawson may want you alive for entirely selfish reasons."
"That does not make the warning false."
Chen said,
"There is another issue."
Everyone in the chapel seemed to dislike those words now.
"Hale is attending the gala."
Harper looked at Gabriel.
"The Judge."
"Yes."
"Rourke too?"
"Already there."
"Malcolm wants them in the same building."
Chen answered,
"That is my guess."
"Why?"
"Because Hale just authorized a tactical team to arrest Gabriel during the gala."
Gabriel's face went blank.
"For what?"
"The murder of Samuel Reed."
Adrian swore softly.
Harper looked at Gabriel.
"The frame Malcolm built seven years ago."
"Yes."
Chen continued.
"Evidence was uploaded into the state system forty minutes ago."
"Fingerprints."
"Ballistics."
"A witness statement."
"All of it looks old."
Gabriel gave a humorless smile.
"Because Malcolm has been keeping it for seven years."
Harper understood the design.
"He arrests you publicly."
"Then what?"
Adrian answered.
"Then Gabriel becomes the story."
Morrison looked at her brother.
"And while everyone watches him, Malcolm kills the people who can contradict the evidence."
"Hale."
"Rourke."
"Derek."
"Maybe Adrian," Gabriel added.
Adrian smiled thinly.
"I am touched to be included."
Harper looked at Chen's encrypted drive.
"What if we make Malcolm's evidence the second biggest story in the room?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"We release ours first."
"To police?"
Harper shook her head.
"To everyone."
Chen was silent for a moment.
Then she said,
"That is either brilliant or catastrophically stupid."
"Can it be both?" Harper asked.
"Frequently."
Gabriel understood.
"The gala has press."
"And screens," Harper said.
"The foundation presentation was supposed to be broadcast to every display in the ballroom."
Elias looked at Gabriel.
"Malcolm knows the system."
"So do we."
"Not if he changed it."
Harper looked at Noah.
"Can we send him somewhere safe first?"
Gabriel nodded.
"Elias has a location Malcolm never knew."
Noah stood immediately.
"I do not want to go without Harper."
She knelt in front of him.
"I need you to do something for me."
"What?"
"Be eight."
He frowned.
"That is not something."
"It is tonight."
Harper took his hands.
"Eat something."
"Watch a movie."
"Complain that the movie is boring."
"Ask for ice cream after you were told no."
Noah's eyes filled.
"What if you do not come back?"
Harper's throat closed.
She refused to promise what she could not guarantee.
That was another thing Derek had taught her promises could destroy.
"I am going to do everything I can to come back."
Noah looked at Gabriel.
"And him?"
Gabriel crouched despite the pain in his side.
"Same answer."
Noah considered him.
Then he hugged Gabriel suddenly.
Gabriel froze.
Harper almost smiled at the panic on the mob boss's face.
After one second, Gabriel carefully put an arm around the boy.
"You are squeezing the bullet hole."
Noah jumped back.
"Sorry."
"I have had worse greetings."
Elias took Noah through the rear door.
Morrison went with him.
Adrian remained.
"I am coming to the gala," he said.
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
"Malcolm wants me dead too."
"That is an argument for staying away."
"My presence changes his plan."
Harper looked at Gabriel.
"He is right."
Gabriel frowned.
"I am beginning to miss when everyone feared me."
Adrian smiled.
"You should choose employees with less self-respect."
Harper said,
"He tried that with Malcolm."
Adrian's smile vanished.
At 8:11, Harper entered the Grand Harbor Hotel through the catering entrance wearing a simple black dress Morrison had found in a garment bag at the rectory.
She hated the dress because it made her feel visible.
For four days she had been trying to disappear.
Tonight visibility was the point.
Gabriel wore a black tuxedo over a fresh bandage and enough pain medication to make his surgeon furious.
Adrian entered separately through the front doors.
Chen came without a badge, dressed like a guest.
Her two trusted Internal Affairs contacts remained outside.
The ballroom ceiling rose three stories above a floor of polished stone.
A wall of glass overlooked the harbor.
Harper saw Rourke immediately.
The captain stood beside Deputy Commissioner Charles Hale near the main stage.
Hale was sixty, broad, gray-haired, and smiling for cameras.
He looked nothing like a criminal mastermind.
Harper had learned to distrust appearances.
Rourke saw her.
His face changed.
He leaned toward Hale.
Hale's smile disappeared.
"They know we are here," Harper whispered.
Gabriel's hand hovered near her back without touching.
"They knew the moment we entered."
"Comforting."
"I do my best."
Music stopped at 8:24.
The foundation director walked onto the stage.
She began thanking donors.
Harper barely heard her.
Chen moved toward the control booth.
Adrian appeared on the opposite side of the ballroom.
Rourke noticed him.
His face went white.
Hale turned.
Then all the ballroom screens went black.
The director stopped speaking.
Guests murmured.
A video appeared.
Not Thomas's.
Gabriel's.
Security footage showed him entering an alley seven years earlier.
A man followed.
The image jumped.
A gun flashed.
The man fell.
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Harper looked at Gabriel.
"Is that Samuel Reed?"
"No."
His face had gone cold.
"Who is it?"
"A man named Victor Dane."
"Did you kill him?"
"Yes."
Harper's breath caught.
On screen, text appeared.
GABRIEL ASHFORD - MURDERER.
Then another line.
SAMUEL REED - SILENCED WITNESS.
Hale stepped toward the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm."
Uniformed officers entered through three doors.
"Gabriel Ashford, you are under arrest."
The cameras turned toward him.
The plan was perfect.
Public accusation.
Public arrest.
A room full of witnesses too shocked to ask whether the evidence matched the victim named.
Harper looked toward the control booth.
Chen was gone.
"Gabriel."
"I know."
He raised his hands.
"Do not fight them," Harper whispered.
"I was not planning to."
Rourke approached with cuffs.
Gabriel looked at the silver ring on his hand.
"Still wearing it."
Rourke's jaw tightened.
"Hands behind your back."
Harper stepped forward.
"The man in the video is not Samuel Reed."
Rourke turned.
"Stay out of this."
"You know it is not him."
"Ms. Queen, you are wanted for questioning too."
"For the shooting where Gabriel was the one shot?"
Rourke's eyes hardened.
"You are obstructing an arrest."
Harper looked at the nearest camera.
"Good."
Rourke stared.
"What?"
"I wanted you to say that clearly."
The ballroom screens changed again.
Thomas Ashford appeared.
Rourke stopped breathing.
Harper did too.
Chen had made it into the booth.
Thomas's recorded voice filled the ballroom.
"Malcolm is selling routes to Vale."
Guests went silent.
"Rourke is cleaning the police side."
Rourke turned toward the control booth.
"Shut that down!"
No one moved quickly enough.
The next screen showed the microfilm ledger.
Then the payment to Harbor Light Consulting.
Then the photograph of Derek beside Rourke and Adrian.
Then the St. Brigid's security footage showing Malcolm handing Derek money.
Hale stepped away from the microphone.
Harper saw fear cross his face.
The final slide appeared.
DEPUTY COMMISSIONER CHARLES HALE - ADMINISTRATIVE OVERRIDE LOGS.
The ballroom exploded.
Reporters stood.
Phones came out.
Cameras shifted from Gabriel to Hale.
Hale turned toward Rourke.
"What did you do?"
Rourke stared at him.
"Me?"
"You said the files were gone."
Harper heard it.
So did the microphone in Hale's hand.
The room went silent again.
Hale realized what he had said.
His face drained of color.
Chen's voice came over the speakers.
"Thank you, Commissioner."
She appeared at the edge of the stage.
"That saved me some paperwork."
Two Internal Affairs investigators entered the ballroom.
Rourke reached for his weapon.
Gabriel moved first.
He drove his shoulder into Rourke's arm.
The gun hit the floor.
Officers shouted.
Guests screamed.
Hale ran toward a service corridor.
Adrian stepped into his path.
"Leaving early?"
Hale froze.
Then the chandeliers went dark.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Somewhere above them, three shots cracked.
A window shattered.
The crowd surged.
Harper lost sight of Gabriel.
"Gabriel!"
Someone caught her arm.
She spun, ready to strike.
Derek Lawson stood behind her.
His left shoulder was bandaged beneath a stolen hotel jacket.
His face was pale and wild.
"We need to go."
Harper pulled away.
"Get off me."
"Malcolm is here."
"I know."
"No."
Derek looked toward the dark balcony above the stage.
"You do not understand."
Another shot struck the wall.
Derek dragged Harper behind a stone column as glass rained over the ballroom.
"He is not here to escape."
Harper stared at him.
"Then why is he here?"
May you like
Derek's eyes moved toward Hale, Rourke, Adrian, and Gabriel.
"To make sure everyone who knows the truth dies in the same room."
