Chapter 18 - THE JUDGE FALLS

The next thirty seconds fractured into noise.
Guests pushed toward exits.
Security tried to direct them away from the glass atrium.
Police shouted conflicting commands.
A fire alarm began screaming even though there was no fire.
Harper stayed behind the stone column with Derek on one side and chaos on the other.
"Where is Malcolm?"
Derek pointed toward the lighting balcony.
"He was there."
"Was?"
"After the first shot, he moved."
"How do you know?"
Derek gave her a look she remembered from his years in uniform.
"Because I know how he works."
"You did not know enough to stop being used by him."
His face tightened.
"Not now."
"Especially now."
Harper looked toward the stage.
Gabriel was helping Chen disarm Rourke.
Hale had vanished into the service corridor.
Adrian was gone too.
"Hale ran."
Derek swore.
"Malcolm will follow him."
"Why?"
"Because Hale kept copies."
Harper stared.
"Of what?"
"Everything."
Derek's voice dropped.
"Hale did not trust Malcolm."
"He kept a private insurance file on Rourke, Malcolm, me, William Ashford, Adrian, port officials, judges, prosecutors."
"Where?"
"I do not know."
"Then how do you know it exists?"
"Because Hale made me deliver one envelope into a bank vault six years ago."
Harper's mind raced.
"Malcolm needs Hale alive long enough to get the vault."
"Exactly."
"Then he is not trying to kill everyone yet."
Derek looked at her.
"Yet."
Gabriel found them.
He stopped when he saw Derek.
Every line in his body changed.
"Step away from her."
Derek laughed weakly.
"You are welcome."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"For what?"
"Keeping your girlfriend from getting shot."
Harper snapped,
"I am not anyone's girlfriend."
Both men looked at her.
"And if either of you debates that while Malcolm is hunting witnesses, I will personally make the evening worse."
Gabriel almost smiled.
Derek did not.
Chen arrived with Rourke in cuffs.
Rourke's cheek was bleeding.
"Lawson."
Derek looked at his former captain.
"You look terrible."
"You are dead."
"People keep saying that tonight."
Chen pushed Rourke against the column.
"Where did Hale go?"
Rourke stared at her.
"Go to hell."
Derek leaned closer.
"Malcolm is going to kill him."
Rourke's face changed.
Derek smiled without humor.
"There it is."
"You know."
Rourke looked away.
Harper understood.
"Malcolm cut you out."
Rourke said nothing.
"That video was not just meant to frame Gabriel."
Harper's voice sharpened.
"It was meant to bring every one of you into the same room."
Rourke's jaw tightened.
"He told me Hale wanted Ashford arrested."
Chen laughed once.
"And you believed him?"
"Hale did want him arrested."
"For the wrong murder," Gabriel said.
Rourke looked at him.
"You still killed Dane."
"Yes."
Gabriel did not flinch.
"Victor Dane murdered my mother."
Harper turned toward him.
That was new.
Gabriel continued before she could ask.
"I found him before police did."
"I killed him."
"I was twenty-three."
The admission was plain.
No excuse.
No pride.
Rourke smiled.
"There is the famous Ashford honor."
Gabriel's face stayed calm.
"I never claimed honor."
"Only consequences."
The words sounded directed at himself as much as anyone else.
Harper looked at him differently.
Not with approval.
Not with fear.
With the uncomfortable recognition that Gabriel's violence and Derek's were not the same, but neither could be made clean by affection.
That mattered.
She did not want another man turned into a story she told herself because the truth was inconvenient.
Chen's phone vibrated.
"Hale's vehicle just exited the hotel garage."
"Alone?"
"Traffic camera shows one passenger."
Derek swore.
"Malcolm."
Gabriel looked at Elias, who had appeared through the crowd.
"Track it."
"Already doing it."
Rourke suddenly lunged.
Chen caught the chain between his cuffs and twisted.
He went to one knee.
"Try that again," she said.
"I have had a very bad week."
Rourke stopped moving.
Derek laughed.
Then he nearly collapsed.
Harper grabbed his good arm out of reflex.
He looked at her hand.
She released him immediately.
"Do not misunderstand that."
"Would not dream of it."
His face had gone gray from blood loss.
Chen examined the bandage.
"You need a hospital."
"Apparently everyone in Boston has become a doctor."
Harper said,
"You are going to one."
Derek looked at her.
"Not until Malcolm is caught."
"Why do you care?"
"Because I know what happens if he gets away."
"He kills you?"
"Eventually."
Derek swallowed.
"But first he kills you."
Gabriel moved closer.
"Do not use her as your excuse for survival."
Derek's eyes sharpened.
"You think you know her because you played hero for four days?"
"No."
Gabriel's voice stayed low.
"I know enough not to call what you did love."
Derek stepped toward him.
Harper moved between them.
"Stop."
Neither man did.
Harper shouted,
"Stop!"
They froze.
The old Harper would have apologized for raising her voice.
This one did not.
"I am not the prize in your argument."
She looked at Derek.
"You do not get to prove you loved me by hating him."
Then Gabriel.
"And you do not get to prove you are better than him by threatening him for me."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"Understood."
Derek looked away.
"Do you understand?" Harper asked.
He did not answer.
"Derek."
"Fine."
"That is not the word."
His eyes met hers.
"Yes."
Elias returned.
"Hale's car crossed into the Seaport."
Gabriel frowned.
"Where?"
"Pier Seventeen."
Adrian's voice came from behind them.
"Of course."
Everyone turned.
He had blood on one sleeve but appeared uninjured.
Morrison stood beside him.
Harper stared.
"Where did you go?"
Adrian answered.
"To prevent Hale's men from killing my sister."
Morrison looked furious.
"By dragging me into a kitchen freezer."
"It was reinforced."
"It was freezing."
"The name suggested that possibility."
Even Chen laughed.
Morrison did not.
Adrian looked at the map on Elias's phone.
"Pier Seventeen belonged to William Ashford."
Gabriel's expression changed.
"Not for years."
"On paper."
Adrian looked at him.
"The underground vault is still there."
Derek straightened despite the pain.
"Vault?"
Adrian nodded.
"William and Hale used it before Thomas died."
Harper connected the pieces.
"Hale's insurance file."
Adrian looked at her.
"Could be."
Gabriel turned to Chen.
"Can you get lawful backup?"
Chen held up her empty badge holder.
"I am suspended."
"Your contacts?"
"Internal Affairs can move on Rourke."
"Hale is different."
Rourke laughed from the floor.
"You cannot touch Hale without a state warrant."
Chen looked down at him.
"Then help me get one."
Rourke stared.
"Why would I?"
"Because Malcolm just tried to arrange your death."
"And because the first person who cooperates usually gets the better deal."
Rourke's face twisted.
Derek smiled.
"She is right."
"Shut up."
"You taught me self-preservation, Captain."
Rourke looked from Derek to Gabriel to Chen.
Then to the ballroom full of cameras that had recorded Hale's accidental admission.
He understood his world had changed.
"I want counsel."
Chen nodded.
"You can have counsel."
"And protection."
"From Malcolm?"
"From everyone."
Rourke looked at Gabriel.
Gabriel smiled faintly.
"I am offended."
Rourke ignored him.
"There is a judge on emergency rotation tonight."
"Name?" Chen asked.
"Ruth Alvarez."
Chen knew it.
"Clean?"
Rourke gave a short laugh.
"Clean enough that Hale hates her."
"Good."
For the next twenty minutes, the strangest alliance in Boston formed beside a ballroom column.
A suspended detective.
A mob boss.
His enemy.
A corrupt captain trying to save himself.
A wounded abusive cop who knew the conspiracy from inside.
A house manager who had spent seven years living under a false name.
And Harper Queen, the maid Derek had spent years teaching to believe no one would listen to her.
Chen recorded Rourke's statement.
Rourke named Hale.
He named Malcolm.
He admitted moving evidence in Thomas's case.
He admitted firing at Thomas's vehicle.
Harper watched Gabriel when that confession came.
His face did not move.
Only his hands did.
They closed slowly at his sides.
Rourke continued.
"Malcolm ordered the ambush."
"Hale authorized the cleanup."
"Derek changed the hospital chain."
"I fired two rounds."
Morrison turned away.
Adrian lowered his head.
Gabriel asked,
"Which one hit him?"
Rourke looked at him.
"I do not know."
"Which one?"
"I said I do not know."
Gabriel stepped forward.
Harper caught his sleeve.
He stopped.
Not because she was stronger.
Because he chose to.
Rourke swallowed.
"The medical report said either round could have caused the fatal bleeding."
Gabriel's voice became almost inaudible.
"He was alive when he reached the hospital."
"Yes."
"You knew."
"Yes."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Harper felt his arm tremble beneath her hand.
She released him but stayed beside him.
Chen received a call.
Judge Alvarez had authorized emergency warrants based on Rourke's recorded statement, the broadcast evidence, and the existing Internal Affairs file.
For the first time all night, someone inside the legal system was moving faster than the conspiracy.
"State Police are on the way to Pier Seventeen," Chen said.
Gabriel immediately started toward the exit.
Chen blocked him.
"No."
"Move."
"You are a named suspect in another homicide."
"A false one."
"And you admitted a different one in a ballroom full of cameras."
Gabriel's expression turned dangerous.
Chen did not care.
"You are not walking into an active warrant scene with armed men."
"Malcolm has Hale."
"State Police will handle it."
"Malcolm knows my property better than they do."
Adrian stepped forward.
"He is right."
Chen glared at him.
"I did not ask the second mob boss."
"I prefer businessman."
Harper almost groaned.
"Not now."
Adrian nodded.
Harper looked at Chen.
"We can give them the layout."
"Without going inside."
"Yes."
Gabriel looked at her.
"You agree with Chen?"
"I agree with not making the police guess where hidden tunnels are while Malcolm has a hostage."
"Hale is not exactly innocent."
"Hostages do not have to be innocent."
Gabriel sighed.
"Fine."
The word barely left his mouth before Derek disappeared.
Harper noticed first.
"Where is Derek?"
Everyone turned.
The space beside the column was empty.
Elias swore.
A service door swung slowly at the far end of the ballroom.
Harper ran toward it.
Gabriel followed.
Outside, the hotel loading lane was empty except for a black sedan pulling away.
Harper recognized the driver.
Paul Mercer.
Derek sat in the passenger seat.
He looked back through the rear window.
Then the sedan accelerated toward the Seaport.
Harper's phone buzzed.
A message from Derek appeared.
I AM ENDING THIS BEFORE MALCOLM DOES.
A second message followed.
DO NOT FOLLOW ME.
Harper stared at the screen.
Gabriel read over her shoulder.
"He really does not know you very well."
Harper looked at him.
May you like
"We are following him."
"Obviously."
