Chapter 3: Lily Makes a Choice

That evening Lily quietly knocked on Grace's apartment door.

Grace opened it with surprise.

"Lily?"

The little girl held a small paper bag.

"I brought your favorite lemon cookies."

Grace smiled for the first time in days.

They sat together on the balcony while the sun disappeared behind the city skyline.

After several quiet minutes Lily finally spoke.

"Grandma cried all day."

"I know."

"Dad keeps calling."

"I know."

"Are you coming home?"

Grace looked toward the lights below.

"I don't know if that house was ever my home."

Lily slipped her tiny hand into Grace's.

"Then let me come here."

"I don't care where home is."

"I only care that you're there."

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

No apology from adults could heal ten years.
