Chapter 8 - The Missing Page

Grandma brought the scrapbook to my office the next day.

Its corners were worn, and Grandpa had labeled the sections with crooked paper tabs.

The pages held everything my mother had dismissed: my first scholarship, my nursing-administration certificate, my early promotions, my community awards.

A photograph showed me standing beside Grandpa at a hospital volunteer event.

I could barely look at it.

"He told people you understood patients because you understood the people who did the invisible work," Ruth said.

I touched the faded picture.

"I thought nobody noticed."

"He noticed."

Between two articles, a torn binding strip showed where an entire page had been removed.

On the remaining edge, Grandpa had written two words.

"Voss meeting."

Grandma said he had grown uneasy about Caroline's visits during the last year of his life.

He had once heard Paula and Caroline discuss a hospital contract as though a family introduction could guarantee access.

Grandpa had objected.

My mother accused him of favoring me.

I asked why Ruth had waited so long to share this.

"Because I thought they were only trying to borrow your reputation," she said.

"I didn't understand they might be trying to damage it."

Daniel reviewed the scrapbook and advised us to preserve it intact.

That afternoon our incident-response specialists identified the compromised vendor account more precisely.

It had been accessed from an unfamiliar network shortly before the attack.

The account belonged to a technical contractor, not Victor Hale personally.

No direct link to the family dispute had been established.

I insisted that distinction appear in every internal report.

But the next call raised the stakes.

An ambulance dispatcher reported a temporary communications bottleneck during a transfer.

The clinical team had worked around it safely, yet another failure would be dangerous.

We called an emergency planning meeting.

Halfway through, a security officer approached Daniel with a printed note.

A visitor had tried to enter a restricted records area while claiming to be my mother.

The visitor was not Paula.

She had carried a badge with Caroline Voss's name.
