Chapter 16 - The Locked Door

Grandma changed her locks the next morning.

She did not announce it.

She simply called a locksmith and made coffee while he worked.

"I can love my daughter without giving her unsupervised access to my house," she told me afterward.

I thought about how long it had taken me to learn the same lesson.

That evening Paula called and asked whether we could talk alone.

I agreed to meet at a neutral café with a clear boundary: no documents, no recordings made secretly, and no discussion of hospital contracts.

She arrived in an expensive camel coat and sat down without taking it off.

"You have turned everyone against me," she said.

"I told them what you did, Mom."

"You always wanted to win."

"I wanted you to stop lying."

She stared into her coffee.

"When you were little, Erin needed me more. You never did."

The explanation startled me with its cruelty.

"I needed you," I answered.

"I just learned not to ask."

For a moment her face changed.

I thought I saw regret.

Then she whispered, "Do you know how embarrassing it is to tell people one daughter is alone at forty-five?"

I set down my cup.

"My divorce is not your shame. My not having children is not your shame. My life is not a reflection you get to polish."

She reached into her purse.

I stiffened when I saw another envelope.

"Caroline says this can all go away," she murmured.

Inside was a proposed joint family statement admitting that our disagreement arose from mutual misunderstanding.

It would have required me to say the forged letter was a harmless clerical error.

"No," I said.

"You haven't even read it."

"I read enough."

She leaned closer.

"Think what you're doing to Erin."

"I'm thinking about her future more than you are."

I stood to leave.

Mom said my name with an unfamiliar tremor.

"If I admit what I did, everyone will know what kind of mother I was."

I looked at her across the table.

"They already know," I said.

"The question is what kind you choose to be next."
