CHAPTER 2 — THE RECORDING IN HER POCKET

The wedding venue emptied within an hour.

Guests left without touching the dinner that had taken three months to plan.

The orchestra packed away its instruments.

Hundreds of white roses remained beneath the chandeliers, surrounding an altar that would never be used.

Vanessa refused to leave.

She sat in the bridal suite with her mother and an attorney, insisting she had rights because she was carrying Ethan’s child.

Ethan did not argue with her.

He stayed in the smaller sitting room with Emma.

Rachel had found a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate, but Emma barely touched it.

She sat curled against her father’s side, staring at the floor.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Are you angry with me?”

The question struck him harder than anything Vanessa had said.

Ethan turned toward her.

“Why would I be angry with you?”

“Because there’s no wedding now.”

He gently lifted her chin.

“The wedding ended because Vanessa made a cruel choice. Not because you told me the truth.”

“But you wanted to marry her.”

“I wanted to marry the person I thought she was.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Does that mean you’ll want the new baby more than me?”

Ethan pulled her into his arms.

“No one will ever replace you.”

“But Vanessa said—”

“Vanessa lied.”

He held her tighter.

“You are my daughter. You were my family before today, and you will still be my family tomorrow.”

Emma finally began to cry.

Not loudly.

She simply pressed her face against his chest and released everything she had been holding inside.

Ethan closed his eyes.

He had spent a year preparing Emma to accept Vanessa as part of their family.

He had encouraged dinners, shopping trips, and weekends together.

Whenever Emma became quiet around Vanessa, Ethan had assumed she was still grieving her mother.

Now he wondered how many warning signs he had missed.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Rachel entered.

“Ethan, there’s something you need to know.”

He looked at Emma.

Rachel understood.

“It can wait.”

“No,” Emma said unexpectedly. “I want to hear.”

Rachel hesitated before closing the door.

“Julian left.”

Ethan frowned.

“He probably didn’t want to be involved.”

“He didn’t leave through the main entrance. Security saw him use the service elevator.”

Rachel handed Ethan her phone.

A security camera showed Julian entering the underground parking garage. Vanessa’s personal assistant, Brooke, followed him seconds later carrying a small suitcase.

Ethan studied the footage.

“Why would Brooke be carrying Vanessa’s luggage?”

“That’s not all.”

Rachel played another clip.

It had been recorded two nights earlier.

Julian entered the hotel through the service entrance at 11:42 p.m. He remained upstairs for almost three hours.

Ethan’s expression tightened.

“He was helping me review documents for Monday’s merger.”

Rachel shook her head.

“The meeting room is on the twelfth floor. Julian went to the bridal suite.”

Emma sat up.

“I saw him there.”

Ethan looked at her.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“What was he doing?”

Emma looked down at her hands.

“I went to give Vanessa the bracelet I made for her. The door was almost closed. I heard them talking.”

Ethan’s pulse began to race.

“What did they say?”

Emma swallowed.

“She told him everything would belong to them after the wedding.”

Rachel and Ethan exchanged a look.

“What did she mean by everything?” Rachel asked.

“I don’t know.”

Emma reached into the pocket of her pink dress.

She pulled out a small phone covered in a purple protective case.

“I recorded some of it.”

Ethan stared at the device.

“You had your phone?”

“Vanessa told me I wasn’t allowed to bring it to the ceremony. But I hid it because I wanted to take pictures with you.”

Emma unlocked the screen and opened a short audio file.

Vanessa’s voice came through first.

“Once Ethan signs the post-wedding documents, you’ll have voting control.”

Then Julian answered.

“He’ll never sign unless he believes they’re routine trust papers.”

“He trusts you,” Vanessa said. “That’s why this works.”

Julian lowered his voice.

“And Emma?”

There was a brief silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She’ll be sent to school in Switzerland. Ethan will resist at first, but once the baby arrives, he’ll move on.”

Ethan’s hand tightened around the phone.

The recording continued.

Julian laughed quietly.

“You sound very sure the baby will change his mind.”

“It will,” Vanessa replied. “He’ll think it’s his.”

The audio ended.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Ethan did not move.

For months, Julian had helped manage Ethan’s company.

He had access to confidential contracts, shareholder records, and family trust documents.

He was also the one who had introduced Ethan to Vanessa.

The relationship had not been an accident.

It had been a plan.

Ethan stood.

“Stay with Emma.”

“Where are you going?” Rachel asked.

“To speak with Vanessa.”

Emma grabbed his hand.

“Daddy, don’t leave me.”

Ethan immediately sat back down.

He realized Vanessa had already taken enough security from his daughter.

He would not take more.

“You’re right,” he said. “I’m staying here.”

Instead, he called the head of security.

“Find Julian Cross. Do not allow him access to any company property.”

Then he called his corporate attorney.

“Freeze Julian’s credentials and suspend every document he submitted during the last six months.”

Finally, Ethan sent the recording to both of them.

Across the hall, Vanessa’s attorney received a message.

His expression changed as he read it.

He stood, quietly gathered his papers, and left the bridal suite without saying goodbye.

Vanessa followed him into the hallway.

“Where are you going?”

“I no longer represent you.”

Her face drained of color.

Ethan stepped out of the sitting room, leaving the door open so Emma could still see him.

Vanessa looked from him to the attorney disappearing into the elevator.

“What did you do?”

Ethan held up Emma’s phone.

“I listened.”

Vanessa stopped breathing for a moment.

Margaret appeared behind her.

“Listened to what?”

“The conversation between Vanessa and Julian.”

Margaret slowly turned toward her daughter.

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“That recording was made without my permission.”

“You admitted the baby isn’t mine.”

“I never said that.”

“You said I would think it was mine.”

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward the elevator.

Ethan noticed.

“Julian isn’t coming back for you.”

Her composure broke.

“He promised—”

She stopped herself too late.

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“There it is.”

Vanessa pressed a hand to her stomach.

“Whatever happened between Julian and me, this child is innocent.”

“I agree.”

She looked relieved.

“That’s why I’ll cooperate with establishing the truth. But you will never be near Emma again.”

Vanessa’s relief vanished.

“You can’t keep me away from my own stepdaughter.”

“You never became her stepmother.”

Margaret stepped between them.

“This can still be handled discreetly. Vanessa made mistakes, but public humiliation will damage everyone.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Your daughter locked a child outside and planned to remove her from her family. Discretion is no longer my priority.”

Before Margaret could answer, two investigators entered the hallway with the hotel’s security director.

The director held a clear evidence bag.

Inside was a folder containing several unsigned corporate documents.

They had been found in Julian’s abandoned vehicle.

Ethan’s attorney opened the folder.

His expression became grave.

“These documents would have transferred controlling authority over the Mercer Family Trust.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never saw those.”

The attorney turned the final page.

Vanessa’s signature was already on it.

Margaret stared at her daughter.

“What have you done?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Julian stepped out with two security officers beside him.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

She took one hopeful step toward him.

But Julian did not return her expression.

Instead, he pointed at her.

“She planned everything.”

Vanessa froze.

Julian continued before anyone could stop him.

“The marriage, the trust documents, even the pregnancy.”

Vanessa’s face twisted with disbelief.

“You coward.”

Julian looked at Ethan.

“I’ll tell you everything. But I want protection.”

Vanessa lunged toward him, but security blocked her path.

Julian reached into his jacket and placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“It contains the clinic records.”

Ethan stared at it.

May you like

Julian’s next words silenced the entire hallway.

“The baby isn’t mine either.”
