CHAPTER 13: THE LAST CONVERSATION

Adrian Cole was charged with conspiracy, bribery, kidnapping, witness intimidation and attempted corporate espionage.

Detective Grant was arrested at a private airport.

Dr. Kessler surrendered two days later.

Julian provided additional evidence and received no reduction in his sentence.

The judge stated that cooperation given only after a conspiracy failed did not erase the harm he had caused.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy and child endangerment.

Her cooperation helped dismantle Cole’s operation, but prosecutors refused to ignore her treatment of Emma.

Before sentencing, Vanessa requested one conversation with her.

Ethan immediately refused.

“Emma is not part of Vanessa’s apology tour.”

The court-appointed child psychologist agreed that Emma should never be pressured.

When Ethan explained the request, Emma surprised him.

“I want to see her.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“You don’t owe her forgiveness.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Emma looked at the framed family rules.

“Because I want her to hear me when she can’t close a curtain.”

The meeting took place in a supervised room at the courthouse.

Ethan sat beside Emma.

A guard remained near the door.

Vanessa entered wearing a plain jail uniform. Without expensive clothes, perfect makeup or carefully arranged hair, she looked like a stranger.

She sat across from Emma.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Vanessa began first.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked directly at her.

“You said that in the note.”

“I know.”

“Did you mean it then?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know the men were coming when you left Lucy?”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was terrified.”

Emma folded her hands in her lap.

“I was scared on the balcony.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

The distinction left Vanessa speechless.

Emma continued.

“You heard me calling for Dad.”

“Yes.”

“You closed the curtain.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward Ethan, but he offered no rescue.

“Because I wanted your father to prove I was more important.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

Emma’s voice remained calm.

“It never would.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I understand that.”

“I don’t forgive you yet.”

Vanessa began to cry.

“You don’t have to.”

“Maybe I never will.”

“I understand.”

“But Lucy shouldn’t grow up thinking what you did was her fault.”

“No.”

“And she shouldn’t think you left because she wasn’t good enough.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Emma reached into her backpack and removed a folded page.

It was a copy of the family rules.

She placed it on the table.

“I added another one.”

Vanessa opened the paper.

The new sentence had been written in purple marker.

WE CAN HELP PEOPLE WITHOUT LETTING THEM HURT US AGAIN.

Vanessa pressed the page against her chest.

“I hope Lucy becomes like you.”

Emma shook her head.

“She should become herself.”

The guard announced that time was over.

Vanessa stood.

“Emma?”

Emma paused near the door.

“You were right,” Vanessa said. “Your father did choose.”

Emma held Ethan’s hand.

“He didn’t choose me instead of you.”

She opened the door.

“He chose not to become someone like you.”

Six weeks later, Vanessa was sentenced to prison.

Before sentencing, she voluntarily terminated her parental rights, allowing Lucy to remain with Rachel and Daniel.

The adoption process began.

But on the day the papers were filed, Ethan received a call from his company.

The board had discovered one final account created by Julian.

May you like

Inside it was enough stolen money to destroy the company permanently.

And every transfer carried Ethan’s digital signature.
