CHAPTER 1 — THE VOWS ON THE FLOOR

The torn pages drifted onto the marble floor between Ethan and the woman he had planned to marry.
For several seconds, Vanessa did not move.
Her carefully practiced smile remained frozen on her face, as though she still believed this was merely an awkward moment she could control.
“Ethan,” she said quietly, glancing toward the open hallway. “You’re being emotional.”
Emma tightened her small hands around the front of her father’s shirt.
She was still wrapped in his white dinner jacket. Her face had lost its color, and tiny drops of melted snow clung to her light-brown hair.
Ethan looked down at his daughter.
Her body was trembling against his chest.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“Emotional?” he repeated.
His voice was calm.
That frightened Vanessa more than shouting would have.
“You locked my eight-year-old daughter outside in freezing weather.”
“She was only out there for a minute.”
Emma immediately shook her head.
“No, Daddy.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“It was a long time.”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“Emma is confused. She was upset because I asked her to behave.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You asked her to behave?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She kept coming into the bridal room. She kept asking when she could see you. She spilled juice near my dress, Ethan. She was ruining everything.”
“She’s eight.”
“And she needs boundaries.”
Ethan stared at her as if he were seeing a stranger wearing the face of the woman he loved.
Downstairs, the wedding music had stopped.
Guests were beginning to gather near the staircase. Whispers passed through the crowd as they saw Ethan holding his daughter and Vanessa standing beside the torn wedding vows.
Vanessa noticed them.
Her entire expression changed.
She softened her eyes, lowered her voice, and reached toward Emma.
“Sweetheart, tell your father you opened the balcony door yourself.”
Emma buried her face against Ethan’s shoulder.
Vanessa’s hand stopped in midair.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t touch her.”
The words were quiet, but every guest heard them.
Vanessa glanced around at the staring faces.
“This is being misunderstood.”
A woman in a navy dress stepped forward from the crowd. It was Vanessa’s mother, Margaret.
“Ethan, perhaps we should handle this privately,” she said. “There are nearly two hundred guests downstairs.”
“My daughter was locked outside,” Ethan replied. “There is nothing private about that.”
Margaret gave Emma an impatient look.
“Children exaggerate when they want attention.”
Emma flinched.
That small movement destroyed the last trace of hesitation inside Ethan.
He turned toward the guests.
“The wedding is canceled.”
A shocked murmur swept through the hallway.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“You cannot do this to me.”
Ethan looked directly at her.
“You already did it to yourself.”
He carried Emma toward the stairs, but she suddenly lifted her head.
“Daddy, wait.”
Ethan stopped.
Emma slowly reached into the pocket of his dinner jacket. Her fingers trembled as she pulled out a small silver key.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
Emma held it out.
“She put this in her flowers after she locked the door.”
Every face turned toward the bridal bouquet resting on a nearby table.
A narrow ribbon had been tied around the handle.
Beneath it was an empty silver key ring.
Vanessa rushed forward.
“She stole that!”
Emma recoiled.
Ethan stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Emma looked up at him, tears filling her eyes.
“She said I had to stay outside until the wedding was over.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“What else did she say?”
Vanessa shook her head rapidly.
“Emma, don’t.”
The little girl looked at the woman in the wedding gown.
For the first time, there was something other than fear in Emma’s eyes.
There was courage.
“She said after you married her, you wouldn’t need me anymore.”
The hallway went completely silent.
Emma continued, her voice breaking.
“She said she would send me far away. And if I told you, she would say I ruined your wedding because I was jealous.”
Ethan closed his eyes for one painful second.
When he opened them again, Vanessa took a step backward.
“You threatened my daughter.”
“I was frustrated.”
“You told her I would abandon her.”
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“How else could an eight-year-old understand it?”
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
Her perfect control was disappearing.
“I gave up everything for this relationship,” she snapped. “I planned this entire wedding. I changed my life for you. And every single day, I had to compete with a child who still acts as though her mother is coming back.”
Ethan’s face changed.
Emma’s mother had passed away three years earlier.
Vanessa knew that was the one subject no one was allowed to use against Emma.
Yet she had said it in front of everyone.
Ethan carefully passed Emma to his sister, Rachel, who had rushed up the stairs.
“Keep her warm,” he said. “I’ll be right there.”
Rachel wrapped both arms around Emma and led her toward a private sitting room.
Ethan turned back to Vanessa.
“Get out.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“This venue is in my name.”
“The security team isn’t.”
Ethan looked toward two guards standing near the elevator.
“Escort Vanessa and her mother out.”
The guards approached.
Vanessa’s confidence finally shattered.
“You’ll regret humiliating me.”
“No,” Ethan said. “I’ll regret not seeing you clearly sooner.”
One of the guards reached for Vanessa’s arm, but she pulled away.
Then she placed both hands over her stomach.
“You can cancel the wedding,” she said.
Her voice was suddenly calm again.
“But you cannot walk away from your own child.”
Ethan froze.
Vanessa looked around at the stunned guests before meeting his eyes.
“I’m pregnant.”
She allowed the words to settle over the hallway.
“Ten weeks.”
Margaret smiled with quiet satisfaction.
Vanessa stepped closer to Ethan.
“So before you throw me out, you should decide whether you’re prepared to abandon one child while pretending to protect another.”
Ethan stared at her.
Behind him, Emma had stopped at the sitting-room door.
She had heard everything.
And the frightened look on her face returned.
But before Ethan could respond, his best friend and business partner, Julian Cross, quietly slipped away from the crowd.
Emma saw him.
She also noticed Vanessa watching him leave.
And in that brief glance between them, the little girl understood something none of the adults had seen.

Vanessa’s pregnancy was real.
But the baby might not belong to Ethan.
