Chapter 19 - THE GIRL UNDER THE TABLE

Haven House had been built to make frightened people feel safe.
That morning, every locked door felt like a promise being tested.
Maria Ellis saw Emil through the front window five seconds before he reached the entrance.
She recognized him from volunteer events at the Rossi estate.
She also recognized the panic on his face.
Instead of opening the door, she pressed the security lock and moved Lily away from the lobby.
"Come with me."
Lily looked up from the couch.
"Is Bee back?"
"Not yet."
"Daddy?"
"Soon."
Maria took her hand.
Emil knocked hard against the glass.
"Maria!"
She did not answer.
"Please!"
Lily flinched.
Maria led her toward the kitchen.
"Stay with me."
Emil knocked again.
"I am not here to hurt her!"
Maria stopped.
The sentence was not reassuring enough to open a door.
"Go away," she shouted through the glass.
"I can't."
"That sounds like your problem."
"Victoria told me to take Lily if she didn't call by seven."
Maria's hand tightened around Lily's.
"Then you should definitely go away."
Emil pressed both palms to the glass.
"She called."
Maria paused.
"She told me not to touch Lily."
"Then why are you still here?"
His face crumpled.
"Because Mr. Shaw is coming."
Maria felt cold move through her body.
"How do you know?"
"He called me after Victoria did."
"He said the order still stands."
"What order?"
Emil looked over his shoulder toward the street.
"Take Lily out the rear door and put her in a car."
Maria immediately pulled Lily away from the windows.
"Where is the car?"
"I don't know."
"Who is driving?"
"I don't know."
"What do you know?"
Emil looked close to tears.
"That I don't want to do this anymore."
Maria stared at him through the glass.
He was nineteen.
Not innocent.
Not powerful.
And suddenly aware that following frightening adults did not make their choices less his.
"Then leave."
"If I leave, he'll think something changed."
"Something did."
"I know."
Headlights appeared at the end of the block.
Emil turned.
His face lost color.
"He's here."
Maria grabbed Lily and ran toward the kitchen.
"Where are we going?" Lily asked.
"Somewhere quiet."
"I don't like quiet rooms."
The words broke Maria's heart.
"Not a locked room."
She led Lily beneath the wide kitchen table where volunteers normally folded donated clothes.
"Stay here."
Lily stared at her.
"Under the table?"
Maria remembered stories Beatrice had told about the rainy afternoon when Lily first spoke after Serena's death.
"Bee says tables are good places to think."
Lily's fear softened by one degree.
"She does."
Maria pulled the tablecloth lower.
"Do not come out unless you hear Bee or your dad."
"What about you?"
"I am going to make sure the doors stay boring."
Lily frowned.
"Doors aren't boring tonight."
Maria almost laughed.
"Fair point."
She left the kitchen and called the federal agent stationed two blocks away.
He did not answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then the shelter fire alarm activated.
Maria stopped.
No smoke.
No smell.
Just the alarm.
The emergency locks released automatically.
The front door clicked open.
Maria swore.
Emil entered first.
"I didn't do that."
"I know."
A man stepped through the door behind him.
Edmund Shaw.
His suit was torn at one shoulder from the escape tunnel.
Dust covered his shoes.
His calm remained intact.
"Good morning, Maria."
She stepped in front of the hallway leading to the kitchen.
"You are not welcome here."
"I rarely am."
Emil backed away.
"You said nobody would get hurt."
Shaw looked at him with contempt.
"You have become very interested in morality for someone who helped Victoria escape."
Emil's face reddened.
"I was scared."
"Everyone is scared."
"Competent people remain useful anyway."
Maria looked toward the front windows.
No vehicles had stopped outside.
Shaw had come alone.
That frightened her more.
"Where is Lily?"
Maria smiled.
"Who?"
Shaw's eyes narrowed.
"Do not waste my time."
"You came to a shelter full of children."
"You'll have to be specific."
Shaw stepped closer.
"Victoria told me she was here."
"Victoria has been wrong a lot tonight."
The alarm continued screaming.
Under the kitchen table, Lily covered her ears.
Her breathing began to quicken.
She reached instinctively for her rabbit and remembered it was with Beatrice.
The empty space beneath her arm made panic worse.
Then she remembered Bee's voice.
Thunder is just heaven moving furniture.
Heaven should have better manners.
Lily whispered the words to herself.
"Better manners."
In the lobby, Shaw reached inside his coat.
Maria did not wait to see what he wanted.
She grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall and discharged it directly across his chest and face.
White powder filled the hallway.
Emil shouted.
Shaw staggered back.
Maria ran toward the kitchen.
Shaw recovered faster than she expected.
He caught her shoulder near the doorway and shoved her against the wall.
Emil grabbed his arm.
"Stop!"
Shaw struck him away.
"Useless boy."
Emil fell against a bench.
Maria screamed.
Under the table, Lily began to cry silently.
Then tires screamed outside.
Leo's vehicle stopped across the shelter entrance before the doors had fully unlocked.
He was out first.
Mateo followed.
Beatrice arrived in the federal vehicle behind them and tried to run before it stopped.
An agent shouted at her.
She ignored him.
"Lily!"
Inside the kitchen, Lily heard one word through the alarm.
Bee.
She crawled out from beneath the table.
"Bee!"
Shaw heard her too.
He released Maria and moved toward the sound.
Beatrice entered the shelter at the same moment.
She saw Emil on the floor.
Maria against the wall.
Shaw disappearing into the kitchen.
"No."
She ran.
Leo caught her at the doorway.
"Behind me."
"She's in there."
"I know."
"Leo-"
"Behind me."
For once, Beatrice did not argue because Lily screamed.
They entered together.
Shaw stood beside the table.
Lily was pressed against the far wall.
He had not reached her yet.
A stainless steel island separated them.
"Daddy!"
Leo's entire body changed at the sound.
"Come to me."
Lily started forward.
Shaw moved.
Beatrice grabbed a metal tray and slammed it against the edge of the island.
The crash made Shaw turn instinctively.
It was enough.
Lily ran around the other side.
Leo caught her and pulled her against him.
Mateo entered behind them with federal agents.
Shaw looked around the kitchen.
Every exit was blocked.
For the first time, he looked ordinary.
Old.
Tired.
Cornered.
He raised both hands slowly.
"This does not end the way you think."
Leo held Lily with one arm.
"It already did."
Shaw looked at Beatrice.
"You really believe they will keep you after this?"
She stared at him.
"Who?"
"The Rossis."
"Kensingtons."
"Reporters."
"People like you are useful during a crisis."
"Then the photographs get cleaner again."
Beatrice almost smiled.
"You still don't see me."
Shaw's expression tightened.
"I see exactly what you are."
"No."
Beatrice stepped closer.
"You see a maid."
"You see a body you think people will judge before they hear it speak."
"You see someone poor enough to blame and ordinary enough to erase."
"That is why you lost."
Shaw's eyes narrowed.
"I lost because Victoria panicked."
"You lost because Lily talked."
"Because Serena left records."
"Because Nico copied something."
"Because Voss finally told the truth."
"Because Maria locked a door."
"Because Emil stopped obeying."
"Because Mateo kept looking."
"Because Leo listened."
She took one more step.
"You built your whole plan around people being too frightened, ashamed, poor, compromised, or invisible to matter."
"You were wrong."
Federal agents moved toward Shaw.
He laughed quietly.
"Very inspiring."
"But you still do not know what happened to Serena."
Leo's face hardened.
"We know enough."
"No."
Shaw looked at him.
"You think your wife died because she took the wrong car."
Leo froze.
Mateo's expression changed.
Shaw smiled.
"She knew."
The kitchen went silent except for the fire alarm.
Leo stared at him.
"What did you say?"
"Serena knew there was danger in that car before she drove it."
Beatrice felt cold move down her spine.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
Mateo stepped closer.
"How would she know?"
Shaw looked at him.
"Because I told her."
Leo handed Lily to Beatrice.
Mateo immediately moved between Leo and Shaw.
"Don't."
Leo's voice shook.
"Explain."
Shaw seemed to enjoy having one last secret.
"The device was intended for you."
"We know that."
"Serena learned enough in the garage to realize your car was dangerous."
"Then why did she drive it?"
Shaw's smile faded slightly.
"Ask your brother."
Leo turned toward Mateo.
Mateo looked genuinely stunned.
"I don't know."
Shaw laughed.
"Of course you don't."
Federal agents cuffed him.
Leo stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Shaw looked at Lily.
Then at Beatrice.
Then back at Leo.
"She chose where it happened."
"That is all you get from me."
Leo's face became dangerous.
The lead agent pulled Shaw away before Leo could move.
"Anything else happens through counsel."
Shaw was taken from the kitchen.
The alarm finally stopped.
Silence rushed in so quickly Lily began crying.
Beatrice dropped to her knees and opened both arms.
Lily ran into them.
"Bee."
"I'm here."
"Bunny broke."
Beatrice laughed and cried at the same time.
"Bunny has had a very difficult night."
Leo crouched beside them.
Lily reached for him too.
For a while, the three of them stayed on the kitchen floor without caring who saw.
Then Mateo entered holding his phone.
His face had changed.
"Leo."
Leo looked up.
"What?"
"The forensic team finished recovering deleted fragments from Serena's memory card."
Beatrice stopped breathing.
Mateo looked at Lily.
Then at Leo.
"There is another recording."
"How long?"
"Forty-one seconds."
"From when?"
Mateo swallowed.
"From inside the car."
Leo stared at him.
"Before the explosion?"
Mateo nodded.
The final forty-one seconds of Serena Rossi's voice had been hidden beneath damaged data for two years.
May you like
And now, at last, they were going to hear why she drove away.
