Chapter 13 - THE OTHER DAUGHTER

Harold stared at the photograph of Victoria tied to a chair for so long that Leo finally took the phone from his hand.
"You are not thinking clearly."
Harold looked at him.
"She is my daughter."
"So was Serena."
The words struck like a slap.
Harold's face folded inward for one second before control returned.
"Do not use Serena against me."
"I don't have to."
Leo held up the phone.
"Shaw already did."
Beatrice stood beside Lily near the hangar office.
The child had heard enough secrets in one night to last several lifetimes.
Beatrice wanted her asleep.
She wanted her somewhere warm, guarded, ordinary, and far away from adults who used love as a reason to hurt each other.
Instead, Lily was watching her grandfather discover that the same machinery he built to protect his empire had been turned against his family.
Mateo copied every file from Serena's bank box onto three encrypted drives.
One went to a federal prosecutor he trusted through an old legal contact.
One went into a secure off-site safe.
The third stayed with Leo.
Harold objected.
"Those documents include bank records protected by law."
Mateo did not look up.
"They also include evidence of kidnapping, conspiracy, obstruction, and murder."
"You don't know what they prove."
Beatrice stared at him.
"Your daughter recorded the people who lured her into a garage before she died."
Harold looked at her.
"I know."
"Then stop talking like your bank is the victim."
The room went silent.
Harold's cheeks darkened.
Leo looked at Beatrice with something close to approval.
She did not need it.
Harold looked away first.
"What does Shaw want with you?"
Beatrice's stomach tightened.
"I don't know."
Mateo closed the document case.
"He thinks Serena left something with her."
"She did."
Leo glanced at him.
"The cookbook."
Mateo shook his head.
"Shaw already knows about the safe deposit box."
"Victoria had the cookbook long enough to tell him."
Beatrice thought of Nico's words in the machine shop.
The man who attacked him had asked about the big maid and the second book.
The black notebook had been a decoy.
The cookbook led to the bank box.
Yet Shaw still wanted Beatrice.
"Maybe it isn't about what I have."
Leo looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"Maybe it is about what I can be made to say."
Mateo's expression sharpened.
Beatrice continued.
"Victoria planted the cellar key in my room."
"She told everyone I attacked her."
"She told Leo I was hysterical."
"She tried to make Lily's death look like something I caused."
Harold went pale.
"Lily didn't die."
"They planned before they knew that."
Beatrice looked at the photograph of Victoria.
"What if the whole plan needed a believable person to blame?"
Leo's jaw tightened.
"You."
Beatrice nodded.
"The maid with no money, no family power, and no reason anyone important would defend her."
"They could say Serena trusted me."
"They could say we planned to leave together."
"They could say I hated Leo for stopping her."
"They could say I planted the bomb."
Harold looked horrified.
Mateo looked furious.
Leo looked like he wanted to tear the building apart.
"Nobody would believe that."
Beatrice met his eyes.
"You believed for thirty seconds that I might have hidden something from you because Victoria said it."
Leo stopped.
She did not say it cruelly.
That made it worse.
"People believe stories that fit what they already think."
"The invisible maid is easier to blame than a banker in a suit."
Dante laughed from the chair where he was restrained.
Everyone turned toward him.
"She's right."
Leo stepped closer.
"Explain."
Dante looked at Beatrice.
"Shaw called it narrative insurance."
Her skin crawled.
"What does that mean?"
"If the Serena case ever reopened, he wanted a second story ready."
"One that put the breach inside the staff."
"The cloned housekeeping credential was part of it."
Mateo's face darkened.
"And Beatrice specifically?"
Dante nodded.
"Victoria suggested her."
Beatrice went still.
Leo's voice dropped.
"Why?"
Dante looked at Victoria's photograph.
"Because Serena trusted Beatrice."
"Because Lily loved her."
"And because Victoria hated that."
Beatrice felt something old and ugly click into place.
Every small cruelty.
Every comment about portions.
Every order delivered with a smile.
Every time Victoria sent Beatrice away when Lily climbed into her lap.
It had never been only about class or appearance.
Victoria resented the place Beatrice occupied in Lily's heart.
"She wanted me gone."
Dante shrugged.
"She wanted everyone Serena loved rearranged."
Leo stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Dante smiled faintly.
"Ask her if you get her back."
Harold stepped forward.
"We are going to Site B."
Leo turned.
"No."
"That is not your decision."
"It is if Shaw wants Beatrice."
Beatrice sighed.
"I am standing right here."
Both men ignored her.
"He has Victoria," Harold said.
"He wants Serena's box."
"We give him copies and take my daughter back."
Leo laughed.
"You really have spent your life believing every problem is a transaction."
Harold stepped closer.
"And you have spent yours believing force is more honorable."
"Stop."
Beatrice's voice cut between them.
They looked at her.
"Shaw asked for me."
Leo's answer was immediate.
"No."
"You do not get to decide before I finish speaking."
"Yes, I do."
"Why?"
"Because he wants to frame you for murder."
"Which is exactly why I may be the only person he talks in front of."
Leo stared at her.
Beatrice continued.
"He thinks I am weak."
"He thinks I am scared."
"He thinks I will say whatever he tells me if he threatens Lily."
"Maybe we let him keep thinking that."
Mateo studied her.
"You want to wear a wire."
"I want him recorded."
Leo turned on Mateo.
"Do not encourage this."
"I'm not."
"You sound encouraged."
"I sound practical."
Harold looked between them.
"We can put a transmitter in the document case."
Leo gave him a look of pure contempt.
"You too?"
Beatrice stepped closer to Leo.
"You told me to remind you that Lily needs a father."
"This is me reminding you."
"Do not turn this into a war because you are afraid."
His eyes flashed.
"I am not afraid."
Beatrice stared at him.
"You have been terrified since you opened that cellar door."
Leo said nothing.
The truth had finally found a person powerful enough to offend him.
Beatrice softened her voice.
"So have I."
"But fear does not get to make every decision."
Lily came closer.
"Bee."
Beatrice crouched painfully.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Don't go where Victoria is."
Beatrice's courage cracked.
"I don't want to."
"Then don't."
The simplicity of the answer hurt.
Beatrice touched Lily's cheek.
"Sometimes grown-ups have to do things they do not want to do so bad people cannot keep hurting people."
Lily frowned.
"Daddy says that too."
"That worries me."
Lily almost smiled.
Then she wrapped both arms around Beatrice's neck.
"Come back."
Beatrice closed her eyes.
"I will do everything I can."
Leo heard her use his promise.
He looked away.
The plan formed around Shaw's arrogance.
Harold would contact him and agree to the exchange.
The original Serena documents would remain secured elsewhere.
The case would contain convincing copies and a hidden transmitter.
Beatrice would wear a second transmitter sewn into the inside hem of her coat.
Mateo would lead the recovery team.
Leo would remain close enough to intervene but far enough away that Shaw believed the exchange was genuine.
Most importantly, federal agents contacted through Mateo's attorney would move only after they heard evidence connecting Shaw to Serena's death and the current kidnappings.
Leo hated every part of it.
He hated needing law enforcement.
He hated waiting.
He hated that Beatrice was involved.
He hated that Serena had predicted exactly this flaw in him.
Before they left the hangar, Leo stopped Beatrice near the vehicle.
"You can change your mind."
"I know."
"At any point."
"I know."
"If something feels wrong-"
"Everything feels wrong."
He looked at her bandaged hand.
"Beatrice."
She waited.
"I should have seen what Victoria was doing to you."
The apology surprised her.
"You had a lot happening."
"That is an explanation."
"Not an excuse."
She looked at him.
Those were Serena's kinds of words.
"No," Beatrice said.
"It isn't."
Leo nodded.
He accepted the discomfort without asking her to make it smaller.
That mattered.
At 5:03 in the morning, Harold called Shaw.
The conversation lasted twenty-two seconds.
Shaw gave one instruction.
Bring Beatrice and the box to Site B at six.
No weapons.
No police.
No Leo.
Harold agreed.
When the call ended, Mateo checked the transmitter sewn into Beatrice's coat.
"If he searches you, this is the weakest point."
"Comforting."
"If he finds it, stall."
"How?"
Mateo looked at Leo.
"Talk."
Beatrice sighed.
"Finally, a skill I possess."
Leo did not laugh.
He stood beside Lily, who held the repaired rabbit in both hands.
Beatrice bent and kissed her forehead.
Then Lily pushed the rabbit toward her.
"Take Bunny."
Beatrice shook her head.
"He stays with you."
"Mommy said he keeps secrets."
Beatrice looked at the stitched belly.
"He already kept enough."
Lily pressed the rabbit into her hands anyway.
"Then he can keep you safe."
Beatrice could not refuse.
She tucked the rabbit beneath her arm and walked toward Harold's waiting car.
Leo watched her go.
At the last second, he called her name.
She turned.
He seemed to have a hundred things to say and no language for any of them.
Finally, he chose the simplest.
"Come back."
Beatrice held Lily's rabbit tighter.
May you like
"That's the plan."
