Chapter 11 - THE HANGAR WITH NO FLIGHT

The private hangar belonged to Kensington Aviation, but the men guarding it wore Rossi jackets.
That detail told Leo everything he needed to know before the first door opened.
Dante Cruz had not merely betrayed him.
He had built a second chain of command inside Leo's own organization.
Mateo parked two buildings away while Harold's security director killed the lights on the access road.
Harold wanted to come with them.
Leo refused.
"You stay with Lily."
Harold stared at him.
"She is my granddaughter."
"Then protect her once in your life."
The words landed hard.
Harold did not answer.
Beatrice stood beside Lily near the bank's armored transport vehicle.
She hated the idea of Leo entering the hangar without her knowing what was happening.
She hated the idea of taking Lily anywhere near it more.
"You stay too," Leo said.
Beatrice folded her arms.
"I know."
He blinked as if he had expected an argument.
"That was easy."
"Do not get used to it."
Lily reached for him.
Leo crouched and hugged her.
"I'll be right back."
"Promise?"
He hesitated for a fraction of a second.
Beatrice saw it.
Lily saw it too.
Leo corrected himself.
"I will do everything I can to come right back."
Lily accepted the better promise.
"Okay."
Mateo, Leo, Voss, and three trusted men approached the hangar through a maintenance corridor provided by Harold's aviation manager.
Beatrice watched them disappear on a tablet feed from a body camera Mateo had reluctantly agreed to wear.
Harold stood on the other side of the vehicle cabin.
He watched too.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Then Harold looked at Beatrice.
"Serena trusted you."
It was not a question.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Beatrice almost laughed.
"You'd have to ask her."
"I can't."
His voice changed on the last word.
For the first time, she heard a father rather than a banker.
"Maybe because I never wanted anything from her."
Harold looked at the screen.
"Everyone wanted something from Serena."
"That's exactly why."
Lily leaned against Beatrice and listened without appearing to.
Harold glanced at her.
"I should have believed your mother when she said there were problems in the bank."
Lily looked up.
"Why didn't you?"
Harold's composure faltered.
Children had a way of making complicated excuses sound stupid.
"I thought she was frightened because of your father's life."
"Daddy's life?"
"His enemies."
Lily frowned.
"Victoria was Mommy's enemy."
Harold looked away.
On the tablet, Mateo raised a fist.
The team stopped outside a side office inside the hangar.
Voices carried through the microphone.
Dante's voice was unmistakable.
"Shaw said the plane would be ready."
Another man answered.
"Plans changed."
"My family is already gone."
"Then you have nothing to worry about."
Dante laughed bitterly.
"That is exactly when men like you worry."
Voss whispered through the comms.
"Mia."
A child's sob could be heard behind the office wall.
Beatrice gripped the tablet.
Voss moved before Mateo could stop him.
He kicked open the door.
The next thirty seconds became noise.
Shouting.
A chair falling.
A gun hitting concrete.
Mateo ordering someone to get down.
Then a child's scream.
Beatrice's heart stopped.
The camera steadied.
Voss was on the floor holding a girl of about ten against his chest.
Mia.
Alive.
Dante stood against the wall with Leo's weapon pointed at him.
The unidentified man had escaped through a rear service door.
Mateo's men pursued him.
Leo did not.
He stared at Dante.
"How long?"
Dante lifted his chin.
"Leo-"
"How long have you worked for Shaw?"
Dante looked at Voss and Mia.
"Longer than I worked for you."
Harold swore under his breath.
Beatrice looked at him.
"You knew him?"
"Dante's father worked bank security."
"Of course he did."
On the screen, Leo stepped closer.
"Did you disable the mansion generator?"
"Yes."
"Did you help Victoria escape?"
"Yes."
"Did you help take Lily from the hospital?"
Dante hesitated.
"I supplied the code."
Leo's expression changed.
"Did you know she had been locked in the cellar?"
"Not until after."
"Would it have mattered?"
Dante looked at him.
"Yes."
Leo laughed once.
"Everyone finds a conscience after the child survives."
Dante's face tightened.
"I never agreed to hurt Lily."
"You gave them every tool they needed."
"I gave Shaw access to your movements."
"I gave him schedules."
"I gave him camera gaps."
"I did not give him your daughter."
Leo stepped close enough that Mateo shifted beside him.
"You gave him my house."
Dante said nothing.
"You gave him my wife's garage."
Still nothing.
"Did you help kill Serena?"
Dante's face changed.
"No."
Leo's voice went colder.
"Did you know it was going to happen?"
"No."
"Did you clean it up afterward?"
Dante looked toward Mateo.
That single glance changed everything.
Leo saw it.
Mateo saw it.
Beatrice saw it through the tablet.
"Why are you looking at him?" Leo asked.
Dante swallowed.
"Because Mateo knows."
The hangar went silent.
Mateo's face did not change.
Leo turned slowly.
"Knows what?"
Dante laughed nervously.
"Ask your brother."
Mateo stepped forward.
"Say what you mean."
"You called me the night Serena died."
Beatrice felt cold crawl along her arms.
Leo stared at Mateo.
"You called Dante?"
Mateo nodded once.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"We had a security breach."
Dante interrupted.
"That is not what you said."
Mateo's jaw tightened.
"Then tell him."
Dante smiled without humor.
"You said clean the garage log before Leo sees it."
Harold's head snapped toward the tablet.
Leo did not move.
Mateo's voice was flat.
"Context matters."
"It always does when you're caught."
Leo turned toward Mateo.
"Did you say it?"
Mateo looked directly at him.
"Yes."
Beatrice's stomach dropped.
Leo stared at the man he had called brother for most of his adult life.
"Why?"
Mateo took a breath.
"Because Serena asked me to."
Dante laughed.
"Serena was dead."
"She asked me before she died."
"Convenient."
Leo's voice cut through them.
"Explain."
Mateo kept his hands visible.
"Serena believed the access log would point to the wrong person."
"Who?"
"Beatrice."
Beatrice nearly dropped the tablet.
Harold looked at her.
Mateo continued.
"The cloned housekeeping credential made it appear that someone using staff access entered the garage."
"Serena knew the credential could be traced back to Beatrice's department."
"She thought whoever was behind it intended to frame a staff member if the breach was discovered."
Leo's expression hardened.
"So you deleted evidence."
"I copied it first."
"Then deleted it."
"Yes."
"Without telling me."
"Yes."
Leo stepped toward him.
"You keep saying yes like honesty now repairs two years of lies."
Mateo did not move.
"It doesn't."
Dante watched them with satisfaction.
"There is more."
Leo turned.
"What?"
Dante nodded toward his jacket pocket.
"Phone."
Mateo searched him and removed it.
Dante gave the passcode.
Inside was one audio file labeled M.C. ORIGINAL.
Mateo's expression changed for the first time.
"Where did you get this?"
Dante smiled.
"Shaw."
Leo pressed play.
Mateo's voice came through clearly.
Clean the garage log before Leo sees it.
Dante's younger voice answered.
All of it?
Mateo replied.
All of it.
Then another sentence followed.
If he finds out who was in that garage, Serena dies for nothing.
The recording ended.
Leo stared at Mateo.
Beatrice could not breathe.
Serena had already been dead when that call occurred.
Yet Mateo's words sounded as if he knew exactly who had entered the garage.
"You said you never found out," Leo whispered.
Mateo looked at the phone.
"That recording is incomplete."
Dante laughed.
"Of course it is."
Leo stepped away from Mateo as though proximity itself had become dangerous.
"What came before it?"
Mateo's eyes stayed on Leo.
"Serena's instructions."
"She's dead in the recording."
"She left instructions before."
"Who was in the garage?"
Mateo said nothing.
That silence broke something.
Leo raised his weapon.
Beatrice shouted at the tablet even though he could not hear her.
"Leo, don't."
Lily grabbed her sleeve.
"Bee?"
Beatrice looked down at the child.
Lily was staring at the frozen image of Mateo on screen.
"Uncle Mateo didn't hurt Mommy."
Beatrice swallowed.
"How do you know?"
Lily pointed toward the rabbit tucked under her arm.
"Mommy told Bunny."
Beatrice froze.
"What do you mean?"
Lily frowned as if trying to remember.
"The night Mommy cried."
"She held Bunny and said Mateo was the only one who believed her."
Beatrice stared at the rabbit.
They had listened to the files on Serena's hidden memory card.
But had they listened to all of them?
Six audio files.
They had opened only two before the video changed everything.
Four recordings remained unheard.
Beatrice grabbed Leo's phone from the seat where he had left it and called Mateo.
He answered on the second ring.
"Not now."
"Yes, now."
Leo heard her voice through Mateo's speaker.
"Beatrice?"
"Do not do anything until you listen to the rest of Serena's rabbit files."
Silence.
She continued.
"Lily remembers Serena talking about Mateo while holding the rabbit."
Leo looked toward the body camera.
For a second, it felt as though he were looking directly at Beatrice.
"Bring the card," he said.
Beatrice looked at Lily.
The child held the rabbit tighter.
"We already have it copied to Mateo's laptop."
Mateo turned toward the equipment case.
Dante's smile faded.
Leo noticed.
"You don't want us to hear it."
Dante looked away.
Mateo opened the laptop.
Four unheard audio files waited on the screen.
The third recording began with Serena crying.
Then she spoke one sentence that made everyone in the hangar go still.
May you like
"Mateo, if I die, Leo can never know what Victoria did until Lily is safe."
