Chapter 5 — A Home Without Fear

One year later, the mansion no longer resembled the house Sophie remembered.

The pantry shelves were always full.

The locks had been removed from every closet.

Every room felt warm instead of silent.

Richard established the Emily Foundation, a charity dedicated to protecting children experiencing neglect and helping families recognize hidden signs of abuse before it was too late.

Many of the former staff returned to work—not because they needed the job, but because they wanted Sophie to grow up surrounded by people she trusted.

On Sophie's eighth birthday, Richard asked what gift she wanted most.

She thought for a long time before answering.

"I don't want presents."

"I just want everyone at my party to eat until they're full."

Richard smiled.

That afternoon, children filled the backyard with laughter.

There were no rules about asking for seconds.

No one watched their plates.

No one was afraid.

As the sun began to set, Sophie slipped her hand into her father's.

She looked toward the sky, then back at him.

"I think Mommy would like it here."

Richard squeezed her hand.

May you like

"So do I."

And for the first time in many years, the house that had once been filled with silence became a home filled with peace, where love—not fear—was the loudest thing anyone could feel.
