Chapter 1 — The Locked Diary

The courtroom battle was over.

Vanessa was gone.

The mansion had become strangely quiet.

For the first time in years, Sophie slept through an entire night without waking up crying.

Richard believed the nightmare had finally ended.

He was wrong.

One rainy afternoon, movers began clearing Vanessa's belongings from the guest wing.

Most of it was expensive clothing, designer handbags, and unopened boxes.

Then one worker discovered something hidden behind a loose panel inside a walk-in closet.

A small wooden box.

Locked.

Richard almost ignored it.

Until Sophie walked into the room.

The moment she saw the box, every bit of color drained from her face.

She tightened her grip around her stuffed rabbit.

"That's where she kept Mommy."

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Sophie looked at the floor.

"Miss Vanessa said Mommy belonged in the box now."

His heart stopped.

The locksmith arrived within the hour.

Inside wasn't jewelry.

It wasn't money.

It was a faded leather diary.

A stack of handwritten letters.

And dozens of photographs Richard had never seen before.

Every page belonged to Emily...

Sophie's late mother.

Richard opened the diary with trembling hands.

The very first sentence shattered everything.

"If you're reading this... someone made sure I never got to tell you the truth."
