Chapter 5 - AFTER IMPACT

Vivian wore a black raincoat in the video.

Sebastian stood beside her.

A third person was partially hidden by the wrecked car.

Alejandro leaned closer to the screen.

"Pause it."

The technician froze the image.

Only the third person's hands were visible.

Gloves.

A medical bag.

Elena's car had struck the guardrail.

The windshield was cracked.

The driver's door was open.

Blood streaked the steering wheel.

Then the video moved again.

Vivian looked toward the camera.

"Is she conscious?"

A man's voice answered.

"Barely."

Voss.

Alejandro recognized him now.

Sebastian crouched beside Elena.

"We need to move."

Vivian remained calm.

"Not until the phone is done."

She took Elena's phone and smashed it against the road.

Once.

Twice.

Then she placed it under the passenger seat.

Sebastian stared at her.

"You said we were only going to scare her."

Vivian looked at him.

"Plans change."

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

Voss lifted Elena from the driver's seat.

Her head fell against his shoulder.

She was alive.

Alive after the crash.

Alive while Vivian staged the scene.

Alejandro watched Vivian smear Elena's blood across the inside of the car.

Then she removed Elena's purse and put it back on the seat.

"The river will do the rest," Sebastian said.

Vivian shook her head.

"No body."

"Exactly."

"No."

She looked at Elena being carried toward another vehicle.

"A missing woman is more useful than a dead one."

The room went silent.

Alejandro felt cold from the inside out.

Claire whispered,

"There it is."

Motive had not been revealed yet.

But intent had.

Elena was not supposed to die.

She was supposed to disappear.

The video continued.

Sebastian looked nervous.

"Alejandro will never stop searching."

Vivian smiled.

"That's the point."

Alejandro froze.

Vivian walked closer to Sebastian.

"Every country he searches is another week he doesn't look at the company."

"And Elena?"

"Voss will handle her."

"For how long?"

Vivian looked toward the unconscious woman.

"Until she becomes useful again."

The video ended.

Alejandro stood completely still.

For three years, his refusal to give up had felt like loyalty.

Vivian had used it as a leash.

Every new lead had pulled him farther from home.

Every false sighting had cost weeks.

Every overseas tip had emptied his attention from the company.

He looked at Claire.

"How many of my searches were initiated by tips from Sebastian's investigators?"

Claire's expression changed.

"I'll check."

"All of them."

She left immediately.

Detective Brooks copied the video into evidence storage.

"This is enough to change the investigation dramatically."

Alejandro looked toward the mansion.

"Arrest her."

"Soon."

"You just watched her kidnap my wife."

"I watched a recording that appears to show her participating in a kidnapping."

"What more do you need?"

Brooks met his anger without reacting.

"I need chain of custody, authentication, and prosecutors who can keep her in prison after the arrest instead of making you feel good for six hours."

Alejandro hated the answer.

He respected it too.

"Then do it right."

"That's the plan."

Back in the mansion, Elena was told about the video carefully.

She did not watch it.

She did not want to.

Alejandro understood.

"Sebastian was there," he told her.

Elena closed her eyes.

"I knew his voice."

"Vivian was there too."

Her eyes opened.

"I remember her perfume."

Alejandro waited.

"In the car?"

"After."

Elena pressed a hand to her forehead.

"I woke up somewhere dark."

"The clinic?"

"No."

"Where?"

"Smaller."

Her breathing changed.

"There was wood above me."

Alejandro felt dread.

"A room?"

Elena shook her head.

"A box."

Dr. Holt stepped closer.

"You can stop."

Elena gripped the blanket.

"No."

She looked at Alejandro.

"I woke up inside something I couldn't stand in."

"Could you sit?"

"Barely."

"Did you know where you were?"

"No."

She closed her eyes.

"I heard church bells."

Alejandro looked at Marta.

Marta's face changed.

"What?"

The older housekeeper hesitated.

"There used to be a chapel on the estate."

Alejandro knew it.

A small stone chapel stood near the southern wall of the property.

His grandmother had used it decades earlier.

It had been closed since a roof fire when Alejandro was a child.

"The chapel has bells?"

Marta nodded.

"One small bell."

"Does it still work?"

"I don't know."

Elena stared at her.

"I heard it every hour."

Alejandro stood.

"We're going to the chapel."

Detective Brooks stopped him at the door.

"Police go first."

They crossed the estate under a gray afternoon sky.

The storm had passed.

Mud covered the gravel path.

The chapel looked abandoned.

Ivy crawled across the stone walls.

One stained glass window was broken.

The wooden doors were chained.

The chain looked old.

The padlock did not.

Brooks photographed it before cutting it.

Inside, dust covered the pews.

A rotting cloth hung over the altar.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Elena entered behind Dr. Holt.

She stopped in the doorway.

"This isn't it."

Alejandro felt disappointment and relief at once.

"You're sure?"

Elena looked upward.

The old bell rope hung near the altar.

"The sound was below me."

Marta whispered,

"Below?"

A forensic officer examined the floor.

Near the altar, one stone was cleaner than the others.

He pressed it.

Nothing happened.

He searched the surrounding woodwork.

Behind the altar rail was a recessed iron ring.

He pulled.

A section of floor lifted.

Cold air rose from darkness.

Stone steps descended beneath the chapel.

Alejandro stared at Marta.

"Did you know this existed?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Police went down first.

Alejandro followed when Brooks allowed it.

The basement chamber was narrow.

The ceiling was low.

An old emergency light had been wired into modern electricity.

Against one wall stood a wooden crate large enough to hold a person.

Alejandro stopped.

The lid had metal bolts on the outside.

Inside were scratch marks.

Hundreds of them.

Elena remained at the top of the stairs.

She did not need to see it.

Her body already remembered.

On the wall beside the crate, someone had taped a sheet of paper.

Alejandro read it.

PHASE ONE: DISORIENTATION.

Below were handwritten instructions.

No clock.

No natural light.

Water every six hours.

Minimal food.

Recorded spouse messages every eight hours.

Sleep interruption at random intervals.

Alejandro could barely see through his anger.

Detective Brooks photographed everything.

A second page listed a name.

Subject E.C.

The final line was signed M.V.

Voss.

"He planned this like a treatment protocol," Claire said.

Brooks shook her head.

"Not treatment."

"Control."

They found a speaker mounted above the crate.

A wire led to a small digital player.

The memory card was still inside.

The technician copied it.

Then he pressed play.

Alejandro's own voice filled the underground room.

"Elena, listen to them."

A pause.

"Do not make this harder."

Another pause.

"I am not coming for you."

Alejandro shut the device off.

He could not listen.

He looked at the crate.

His wife had spent days in darkness hearing him abandon her.

No wonder she had flinched when he approached.

No wonder she called him sir.

No wonder she had written ALEJANDRO DOES NOT KNOW until the wall ran out of space.

She had been fighting to preserve one truth while everyone around her tried to erase it.

Detective Brooks found another object beneath the crate.

A broken bracelet.

Silver chain.

Blue enamel charm.

Elena's old key ring.

The password clue.

The first thing Vivian stole.

Alejandro picked it up with gloved hands.

The enamel was scratched.

One key remained attached.

It was small and brass.

Not a house key.

Not a car key.

A safety deposit key.

Claire examined the number engraved on it.

"Bank key."

Alejandro looked at Elena at the top of the stairs.

"Do you recognize this?"

She came down one step.

Then another.

When she saw the key, she stopped.

"Yes."

"What does it open?"

Elena stared at it.

"A box I rented two weeks before I disappeared."

Alejandro's heart started pounding.

"What's inside?"

Her eyes lifted to his.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

Elena swallowed.

"I think it proves who was stealing from the foundation."

Claire stepped forward.

"Which bank?"

Elena named a private bank downtown.

Alejandro looked at the key again.

"Then we open it today."

Detective Brooks made the call.

The bank manager confirmed the box still existed.

It had never been closed.

But there was a problem.

Someone had accessed it three days earlier.

Alejandro stared at Brooks.

"Who?"

The detective listened to the bank manager.

Then her expression changed.

"According to the access log, Elena Castillo did."

Every person in the chapel looked at Elena.

May you like

She went white.

"I haven't left this property in three years."
