Chapter 24 - THE TERMINAL

The old Castillo shipping terminal had been abandoned for seven years.

The night before the exchange, nobody at the mansion pretended to sleep.

Alejandro reviewed the terminal plans with Mateo until every loading bay blurred together.

Elena sat with Claire and Brooks building a separate list.

Not entrances.

Camille's habits.

She used hostages to create urgency.

She preferred exits prepared before negotiations began.

She planted false evidence where investigators naturally looked first.

She relied on borrowed credentials.

She expected Alejandro to react emotionally and physically.

She underestimated people she classified as servants, assistants, replacements, or damaged witnesses.

That last weakness mattered.

"She ranks people," Elena said.

Brooks looked up.

"Explain."

"Powerful, useful, disposable."

"She watches Alejandro because he is powerful."

"She watches Claire because she is useful."

"She barely watches Rosa because she thinks Rosa is disposable."

Claire nodded slowly.

"Which is why Rosa knocked out Daniel Pike."

"Exactly."

Marta entered carrying coffee.

"And she never watches old housekeepers."

Elena smiled.

"Also true."

Marta placed the tray down.

"Then perhaps stop telling me to stay upstairs."

Brooks refused immediately.

Marta muttered something in Spanish that did not require translation.

The room laughed quietly.

The laughter mattered.

Camille's strategy depended on fear narrowing attention until everyone saw only the immediate threat.

Humor reopened the room.

People thought better when they could breathe.

Before dawn, Elena walked through the foyer alone.

She stopped where the bucket had fallen the night Alejandro found her.

The marble showed no mark.

She had expected the place to feel sacred or terrible.

It looked ordinary.

That comforted her.

The floor had not remembered the moment even if she did.

Places could hold history without being permanently owned by it.

She returned to the planning room and told Brooks she was ready.

Rust stained the loading cranes.

Broken windows faced the river.

Warehouses stretched across twenty acres of cracked concrete.

Rafael once controlled the terminal personally.

Ignacio closed it after discovering irregular cargo records.

Camille choosing the site was not sentimental.

The underground communications lines were ancient and isolated.

Modern surveillance coverage was poor.

She knew the property better than police did.

Alejandro was supposed to arrive alone.

He did not.

He also did not arrive with an obvious tactical convoy.

Brooks built the operation around the original freight tunnels beneath the terminal.

Mateo knew them from old security surveys.

Canadian authorities sent Lila's testimony describing Camille's usual escape planning.

Voss gave details about hidden medical exits once used by Rafael.

Sebastian, recovering under guard, identified a private dock beneath Warehouse Four.

For the first time, nearly everyone the conspiracy had compromised was contributing to the same effort against it.

Not because they were forgiven.

Because truth became more useful than silence.

Alejandro carried a duplicate drive.

The real Sanctuary mirror remained sealed under federal custody.

The brass daughter key around his neck was a copy too.

Elena held the original.

She was not at the terminal.

At least Camille was meant to believe that.

Elena sat in a mobile command post two blocks away with Brooks.

"You know she's expecting you to ignore the plan," Elena said.

Alejandro heard through his earpiece.

"I'm offended by how predictable I've become."

"You were always predictable."

"You married me anyway."

Silence.

Alejandro immediately regretted the sentence.

Then Elena answered softly.

"I did."

The two words stayed with him as he entered Warehouse Four.

Camille waited on an upper platform.

Claire stood beside her.

A thin cable was locked around Claire's waist and attached to the railing.

Two armed men guarded the stairs.

Camille looked down.

"You came."

"You sound surprised."

"You used to follow instructions better."

Alejandro looked at Claire.

"Are you hurt?"

"Insulted mostly."

Camille sighed.

"She has been like this all night."

Claire smiled.

"No billable-hour rules during kidnapping."

Alejandro almost laughed.

Camille did not.

"Drive."

He held up the case.

"Claire first."

"No."

"Then we're done."

Camille leaned against the railing.

"You still think this is a negotiation between equals."

"You need what's in my hand."

"And you need the lawyer breathing."

"Correct."

"Then we are equals."

Camille's mouth tightened.

In the command vehicle, Elena watched camera feeds from tiny devices placed inside the warehouse earlier that morning.

One feed suddenly flickered.

Then another.

"She's found cameras," Brooks said.

Elena watched Camille's armed guard scan the ceiling with a radio-frequency detector.

"Not all of them."

One camera remained hidden inside an old fire alarm housing.

It showed the lower loading bay.

A black van entered from the rear.

Four more armed people stepped out.

"Alejandro," Elena said through the earpiece.

"Four additional people just entered behind you."

He did not turn.

"Understood."

Camille smiled.

"Talking to someone?"

Alejandro removed the earpiece calmly.

"My wife."

Camille's eyes flashed.

"I said alone."

"You also said you were my assistant for twelve years."

"We both lie sometimes."

Camille motioned.

One guard took the case from Alejandro.

He opened it.

The duplicate daughter key lay inside.

The fake drive sat beneath it.

Camille descended the metal stairs.

She picked up the key and studied it.

Then smiled.

"Copy."

Alejandro's stomach tightened.

"How can you tell?"

"The original has a file mark near the third tooth."

She had studied it more carefully than expected.

Camille picked up the drive.

"And this?"

"Real."

"No."

She tossed it onto the concrete.

The drive cracked.

Nothing happened.

Camille smiled.

"The real mirror would have transmitted a tamper pulse."

Claire's face changed.

Alejandro understood.

Camille knew more about Sanctuary's safeguards than Claire did.

Maybe she had helped design some of them through stolen access.

"You wasted my time," Camille said.

She lifted a radio.

"Bring her in."

Alejandro froze.

A side door opened.

Two guards entered with Rosa.

Elena stood so fast in the command vehicle that Brooks caught her arm.

"No."

"How did they get her?"

Rosa was supposed to be in a safe residence.

Brooks called the protection team.

No answer.

Keller's address list had been more damaging than they knew.

Camille had acted before his arrest.

Rosa looked furious, not broken.

"Sorry," she called to Alejandro.

"They cheated."

Camille smiled.

"Now we have two people you dislike losing."

Claire looked at Rosa.

"Welcome."

Rosa replied,

"Terrible service."

Even Alejandro laughed once.

Camille's expression snapped.

"Enough."

She pointed a gun at Rosa.

The warehouse went silent.

"Tell Elena to bring the real key and mirror."

Alejandro stared at her.

"No."

Camille pressed the gun closer to Rosa's shoulder.

"You think I won't?"

Rosa spoke calmly.

"She will."

Camille looked at her.

"I have seen her do worse."

Alejandro's blood ran cold.

Rosa continued.

"But she still needs us for something."

Camille struck Rosa across the face with the back of her hand.

Elena flinched in the command vehicle.

Brooks whispered,

"We have teams in position."

"Not enough."

Two hidden shooters appeared on the warehouse catwalks.

Camille had layered defenses.

A direct assault could kill hostages.

Elena stared at the original daughter key in her hand.

Then at the Sanctuary mirror case beside her.

"I'm going in."

Brooks shook her head.

"No."

"She wants the key."

"Exactly."

"And she thinks the mirror is a device she can control if Claire explains it."

"Your point?"

Elena looked at the drive.

"Ignacio built Sanctuary to release if someone tampered with the mirror."

"What if we let her tamper with it?"

Brooks stared.

Claire had said the real drive might trigger on damage.

Camille confirmed it.

If activation failed, forced tampering could potentially start the disclosure sequence.

"We don't know exactly what triggers it," Brooks said.

"Claire does."

Elena looked at the screen.

Claire was watching one of the hidden cameras.

She knew they were listening.

Elena tapped three times on the command desk.

Pause.

Two.

Pause.

Three.

Rosa's old signal.

Wait.

On screen, Claire's eyes shifted.

Then she tapped one finger against the metal railing.

Three.

Two.

Three.

She understood.

The plan became silent.

Elena entered the warehouse five minutes later carrying the real key and mirror drive.

Alejandro turned when he saw her.

His face showed fear and anger.

He did not tell her to leave.

That mattered.

Camille smiled.

"Finally."

Elena walked toward her.

"Claire and Rosa first."

"No."

"Then I drop the drive."

Camille's smile vanished.

"You wouldn't."

Elena held it over the concrete.

"You spent three years teaching me that objects can be replaced."

"People can't."

Camille stared at the drive.

Then she motioned to one guard.

He unlocked Rosa.

Rosa walked toward Alejandro.

One hostage free.

"Claire too," Elena said.

"After the key."

Elena tossed the brass key.

Camille caught it.

She examined the file mark.

Real.

Her eyes lit with triumph.

"Drive."

Elena looked toward Claire.

Claire tapped the railing once.

Not yet.

Elena waited.

Camille raised the gun.

"Now."

Claire suddenly shouted,

"Drop it!"

Elena released the drive.

It struck the concrete.

A tiny green light flashed.

Camille's face changed.

Claire threw herself sideways as the tamper signal activated.

The cable around her waist snapped against the railing but kept her from falling.

Police lights exploded outside the warehouse.

Every phone in the room began vibrating at once.

The Sanctuary mirror had transmitted an emergency integrity alert to the Swiss custodian.

Camille stared at the broken drive.

"What did you do?"

May you like

Elena looked at her.

"Asked home."
