Chapter 12 - THE FOURTH TOKEN

Every door in the mansion locked electronically at once.

The sound of the locks triggered Elena before the alarms did.

Dozens of bolts snapped into place through the house in a sequence she knew too well.

East corridor.

Service hall.

Laundry door.

Stairwell.

The same rhythm had preceded nights when Voss came.

Her body reacted before she understood the present.

She tasted metal.

Her hands went cold.

The foyer blurred at the edges.

Alejandro saw it.

He did not grab her.

He moved into her line of sight and stayed there.

"Tell me five things you see."

Elena stared at him.

"What?"

"Dr. Holt told me grounding can help."

She almost became angry at the technique.

Then she understood he was asking, not ordering.

"Your coat."

"The lamp."

"Marta."

"Rain on the glass."

She looked down.

"My own shoes."

That last detail mattered.

During captivity she had often been barefoot or given identical work shoes.

Now she had chosen the brown boots herself that morning.

Present time returned around the edges.

The locks were real.

The threat was real.

But this was not the old night sequence.

She had allies.

She had a phone.

She had choices.

The distinction steadied her before the speakers began using Alejandro's voice.

Not because Alejandro ordered it.

Because the fourth V-7 token did.

The lights in the west corridor went dark.

Security cameras blinked off one by one.

A mechanical alarm began sounding beneath the floors.

Elena froze.

Her face lost color.

"That's the night alarm."

Alejandro turned toward her.

"What night alarm?"

"They used it before moving me."

His pulse slammed.

"Brooks!"

Police scattered through the mansion.

The emergency override system refused normal commands.

The fourth token had master control.

Mateo ran to the central security room under supervision.

"It's isolating zones."

Alejandro looked at the floor plan.

Red sections appeared across the screen.

East wing.

Service corridor.

South basement.

Guest residence.

Then the west guest suite where Elena had been staying.

Alejandro's blood went cold.

"It's targeting her room."

Elena was beside him.

Safe for the moment.

But somebody operating the system might not know she had moved.

"Where is Vivian?"

Brooks checked with officers.

Dining room.

Guarded.

Her attorney beside her.

"Then she isn't doing this from a computer," Alejandro said.

Mateo shook his head.

"V-7 tokens can run preloaded sequences."

"Meaning?"

"Someone could have planted a command days ago and triggered it remotely."

A loud metallic sound came from the basement.

Then smoke alarms activated.

"Fire?" Alejandro asked.

Mateo checked sensors.

"No heat."

"False alarm."

The mansion filled with overlapping sounds.

The false alarms also exposed how deeply the staff had been conditioned.

When the night sequence began, three employees automatically moved toward assigned positions without being told.

One housemaid went to the kitchen pantry.

A footman entered a linen closet.

A groundskeeper stood beside the rear stairs with his hands visible.

Brooks noticed.

"Why are they doing that?"

Marta answered with disgust.

"Drills."

Vivian had called them emergency drills.

In reality, each drill trained employees where to stand when Elena was moved.

If anyone was caught in the wrong hallway, they lost shifts, pay, or housing privileges.

One kitchen worker said her brother had been dismissed after accidentally seeing two men carry a covered stretcher toward the east wing.

Vivian told the family he stole silverware.

Another worker remembered hearing a woman crying behind a locked service door.

She reported it.

The next week her work visa paperwork mysteriously developed a problem.

She learned not to report again.

Alejandro listened to each story with increasing shame.

He had believed generous wages and expensive staff housing made him a good employer.

He had never asked whether the people living on his property felt safe disagreeing with the person he allowed to run it.

Elena looked at him.

"You can't fix this tonight."

"I should have known."

"Maybe."

The answer surprised him.

Elena did not rush to comfort him.

"But knowing you should have noticed is only useful if it changes what you do next."

Alejandro nodded.

He ordered immigration counsel, independent payroll auditors, and victim advocates brought in for staff.

No employee would lose housing, wages, or legal support for cooperating with investigators.

For the first time that night, some servants began speaking without being asked twice.

The house was not becoming safe because Alejandro declared it safe.

It was becoming safer because consequences for speaking were being removed.

Doors locked.

Lights failed.

Sirens pulsed.

The system was creating confusion.

Exactly what the old V-7 security protocols were designed to prevent.

Now they were weaponized.

Detective Brooks ordered Elena moved to a police vehicle outside.

Elena refused.

"The gates are locked too."

Mateo confirmed it.

"Emergency vehicle gate isn't responding."

"Manual release?"

"South control box."

An officer headed there.

Before he reached it, the mansion's internal speakers turned on.

Alejandro's voice filled every corridor.

"Elena, go to the east wing."

She stopped breathing.

The recording repeated.

"Elena, go to the east wing."

Alejandro felt rage so intense it became cold.

"Turn that off."

Mateo worked the console.

"I can't."

The message repeated again.

Elena covered her ears.

Her knees buckled.

Alejandro reached for her and stopped before touching.

"Elena, look at me."

She shook her head.

"Look at me."

Her eyes found his.

He spoke slowly.

"Yellow umbrella."

Elena froze.

The recorded voice repeated overhead.

"Elena, go to the east wing."

Alejandro held her gaze.

"Yellow umbrella."

Her breathing changed.

"That's me."

He tapped his chest.

"This is me."

Tears filled her eyes.

"The speakers are not me."

Elena nodded.

"Stay with my face."

She kept looking at him.

The recording repeated once more.

Then stopped.

For a second the house was silent.

A gunshot cracked from the south corridor.

Everyone moved.

Police found the officer sent to the manual gate release on the floor.

He was alive.

A bullet had struck his protective vest.

The shooter was gone.

Now there was no question.

The V-7 operator was physically inside the estate.

Brooks ordered a room-by-room sweep.

All staff were moved into the ballroom.

Employees were counted.

One person was missing.

Marta.

Elena stood immediately.

"Where is she?"

Nobody knew.

Marta had been seen ten minutes earlier carrying tea toward the west hall.

Alejandro felt dread.

They searched the kitchen.

Laundry rooms.

Staff quarters.

East wing.

No Marta.

Then a technician discovered the hidden fireplace passage open behind Alejandro's office.

Someone had used it.

Alejandro moved toward it.

Brooks stopped him.

"No."

"Marta may be inside."

"And someone with a gun definitely may be inside."

Officers entered first.

The passage was barely shoulder-width.

Dust covered most of the floor.

Fresh footprints ran through it.

Two sets.

One small.

One larger.

They led toward the east wing.

At the junction behind the laundry room, officers found Marta's tea tray.

Broken cup.

Blood on one shard.

Elena went pale.

"No."

Alejandro looked at Brooks.

"Find her."

The larger footprints continued toward the old medical room.

The red door stood open.

Inside, the bed had been moved.

A square hatch was visible beneath it.

Nobody had noticed it during the first search because the bed had been bolted over the seam.

The bolts had been loosened from below.

Officers opened the hatch.

A ladder descended into darkness.

The tunnel beneath the red room was newer than the chapel chamber.

Concrete walls.

Electrical lights.

Drainage pipe.

Someone had built a hidden transport route beneath the mansion.

It led south.

Away from the main house.

Elena stared down the opening.

"That's how they moved me."

"You remember?" Alejandro asked.

"Pieces."

She touched her left shoulder.

"They put a hood over my head."

"I smelled wet concrete."

Officers descended.

The tunnel ended in a bunker-like room beneath the old greenhouse.

There they found Marta.

Alive.

Her hands were tied.

A cloth covered her mouth.

Beside her lay the unconscious body of a man wearing a maintenance uniform.

He had a gun.

A laptop.

And a V-7 hardware token clipped to his belt.

Brooks recognized him from staff records.

Daniel Pike.

A temporary electrician hired six weeks earlier.

His background check had been clean.

Too clean.

The photograph on his employment file did not match the man lying on the floor.

The real Daniel Pike lived two states away and had never worked at the Castillo mansion.

The impersonator woke under police guard.

He refused to identify himself.

Marta did.

"I've seen him before."

Alejandro looked at her.

"Where?"

"At the clinic."

Elena stiffened.

Marta continued.

"He came with Dr. Voss."

Police searched the man's pockets.

They found no identification.

They found a burner phone.

The most recent text had been received seven minutes before the security shutdown.

RUN NIGHT SEQUENCE.

MOVE E.C. TO GREENHOUSE.

DISPOSE OF M.

Alejandro stared at the screen.

M could mean Marta.

The plan had been to take Elena again and kill a witness.

The sender number was unregistered.

But the message included a digital routing signature.

Claire's forensic analyst recognized it.

The signal had bounced through a private communications server.

The server belonged to a company in Madrid.

A company controlled by Rafael Castillo.

"There," Alejandro said.

Brooks did not celebrate.

"Strong lead."

"You can say it."

"I just did."

Alejandro looked toward the unconscious impostor.

"Who knocked him out?"

Marta raised her tied hands.

"I did."

Everyone stared at her.

She looked almost offended.

"He turned his back."

"I hit him with the laptop."

Elena laughed.

It burst out unexpectedly.

Marta laughed too.

For ten seconds, the bunker sounded human.

Then Brooks's phone rang.

The laughter stopped.

The detective listened.

"Understood."

She hung up.

"What?" Alejandro asked.

"Vivian's attorney filed an emergency petition."

"For what?"

"To have Elena placed under psychiatric evaluation."

Alejandro's face darkened.

"On what basis?"

"The forged medical history."

Elena's laughter disappeared completely.

May you like

The same cage was being rebuilt.

This time in court.
