Chapter 7 - Evelyn's First Lie

Grant stared at the photocopied ledger as if the handwriting could change if he waited long enough.
Rachel watched the color leave his face.
Daniel Vale remained standing beside the desk.
Julia did not speak.
The silence forced Grant to answer without anyone rescuing him.
"I never saw that page."
Daniel's expression did not change.
"I believe you."
Grant looked at him.
"You do?"
"My father wrote notes after meetings."
Daniel pointed at the date.
"That entry was probably made after you left."
Rachel felt no relief.
"But he told you something in that meeting."
Grant rubbed both hands over his face.
"He told me there was a strong possibility Thomas wasn't my biological father."
"Strong possibility?"
Rachel repeated the phrase carefully.
Grant looked down.
"He said he and my mother had history."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Rachel heard it differently.
"What kind of history?"
"He wouldn't say."
"And the envelope?"
Grant closed his eyes.
"Medical records."
"Whose?"
"Mine."
"From when?"
"My birth."
Rachel stared at him.
"You had records from your own conception for three years and never told me."
"They weren't clear."
"Were they from Northlake?"
Grant's silence answered.
Rachel turned away because she was afraid her face would reveal too much anger in front of Daniel.
She looked through Julia's office window at traffic moving twelve floors below.
People crossed a street carrying coffee.
A delivery truck stopped at a light.
The ordinary movement of the city made the conversation feel more unreal.
Grant spoke behind her.
"Rachel, I thought this had nothing to do with Maddie."
She turned.
"You knew Northlake had records connected to your birth."
"Yes."
"You knew Adrian Vale had a personal history with your mother."
"Yes."
"You knew your DNA matched his niece."
"Yes."
"And when we got an urgent warning from Northlake, you told me not to test Maddie because I might not like the answer."
Grant looked ashamed.
"Yes."
Rachel nodded once.
"Then do not tell me this had nothing to do with her."
Grant sat down.
Daniel slowly took the seat beside him.
For a moment, the two men looked like strangers in a waiting room.
Then Rachel noticed the shape of their hands.
Both had long fingers.
Both curled the right thumb beneath the left palm when nervous.
It was a tiny thing.
It was also enough to make Rachel feel sick.
Julia returned to the evidence.
"Where are the records Vale gave you?"
Grant looked at Rachel.
"At my mother's house."
Rachel actually laughed.
"Of course they are."
"I gave them to her because I confronted her after I left Vale."
"And she kept them."
"She said she needed time."
"Three years?"
"I stopped asking."
Rachel looked at him.
"That sentence might be the story of your entire family."
Grant flinched.
Daniel looked toward the floor.
Julia wrote something on a legal pad.
"Did Evelyn ever admit Thomas was not your biological father?"
"No."
"Did she deny it?"
Grant paused.
"Not exactly."
"What did she say?"
"She said Thomas was my father in every way that mattered."
Rachel closed her eyes briefly.
The same idea Grant had used when he apologized to Maddie.
The same idea Adrian had used to avoid a paternity test.
A true principle had become camouflage for a lie.
Daniel leaned back.
"That sounds like my father."
Grant looked at him sharply.
"Don't compare her to him."
"I wasn't."
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"I was telling you where she may have learned the sentence."
Grant stood again.
"You don't know my mother."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Neither do you, apparently."
Rachel expected Grant to explode.
Instead he looked as if the remark had found the exact wound he was trying not to touch.
Julia stepped in.
"We need the records."
Grant nodded.
"I'll get them."
Rachel shook her head.
"Not alone."
"They're mine."
"And if your mother destroys them after you warn her?"
"She wouldn't."
Rachel stared at him.
Grant looked away.
"Fine."
Julia suggested they request the documents formally and avoid any confrontation that could later become a dispute about ownership or tampering.
Grant hated the idea of sending his mother a lawyer's letter.
Rachel hated that he still cared more about the insult than the evidence.
Daniel volunteered to leave his father's ledger copy with Julia.
Before he left, Rachel stopped him in the hall.
"Why are you helping us?"
Daniel looked back toward the office.
"Because my father mailed me a list of people I was not supposed to contact."
"And Grant was on it?"
"No."
Rachel frowned.
"You were."
Her stomach tightened.
"Me?"
"You, Lauren Pike, Priya Shah, and six other parents."
"Why would I be on a list before I ever contacted him?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"That is exactly what I wanted to know."
He walked away.
Rachel returned to the office.
Grant was staring at the floor.
"He knew about you before you knew about him."
Julia said quietly.
Rachel nodded.
Grant looked up.
"Vale had access to the clinic records."
"He was supposedly retired."
"People like him never really retire."
Rachel picked up her purse.
"I am going to Evelyn's."
Julia raised a hand.
"Not to retrieve documents."
"To ask a question."
Grant stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"She's my mother."
"That is exactly why you're not coming."
Grant's face tightened.
Rachel softened her tone slightly.
"If she looks at you and cries, you stop asking questions."
Grant did not deny it.
"I need ten minutes before that happens."
Evelyn answered her door after Rachel rang twice.
She looked at the envelope in Rachel's hand and immediately understood that the conversation had moved beyond family gossip.
"Is that from your lawyer?"
"Partly."
Rachel entered without waiting to be invited.
Evelyn closed the door.
"Where is Grant?"
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because I want to know whether you can tell the truth when he isn't standing in front of you."
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
Rachel placed the photograph from the cedar box on the entry table.
"Who wrote this?"
Evelyn looked at the handwriting on the back.
"Thomas."
Rachel had not expected an answer that quickly.
"Thomas wrote 'Adrian's first successful cycle'?"
"Yes."
"Was the successful cycle you?"
Evelyn looked toward the living room.
"Come sit down."
"Answer me first."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Rachel felt the admission settle heavily between them.
"You and Thomas used fertility treatment to conceive Grant."
"Yes."
"Did Thomas know donor sperm was used?"
Evelyn opened her eyes.
"We were not supposed to use donor sperm."
Rachel went still.
That answer changed everything.
"What were you supposed to use?"
"Thomas's sample."
"He was fertile?"
"Barely."
Evelyn walked into the living room and sat on the edge of the sofa.
Rachel remained standing.
"Adrian told us a concentrated sample might work."
"And did it?"
Evelyn looked at the carpet.
"I became pregnant after the second procedure."
"Did you believe Grant was Thomas's biological son?"
"For years."
Rachel's anger slipped for one moment into pity.
"When did you stop believing it?"
Evelyn's face changed.
"When Grant was twelve."
"Why?"
"He needed blood after an appendectomy complication."
Rachel listened.
"The blood types didn't make sense."
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
Rachel stared at her.
"Nothing?"
"Thomas was his father."
"That was not my question."
"What would you have had me do?"
Evelyn's voice rose.
"Tell a twelve-year-old boy that the man teaching him baseball might not be his biological parent because of a blood typing anomaly?"
"You could have asked the clinic."
"I did."
Rachel's pulse quickened.
"And?"
"Adrian said lab errors happened."
"You believed him?"
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"No."
"Then what happened?"
"I asked again."
She rubbed her hands together.
"He told me to leave the past alone."
"That is not an explanation."
"It was a warning."
Rachel watched her carefully.
"Why were you afraid of him?"
Evelyn looked toward a photograph of Thomas.
"Because by then I worked for him."
"At Northlake."
"Yes."
"And you had seen something."
Evelyn's eyes moved back to Rachel.
"I had seen enough to know Adrian did not like questions."
"What did you see?"
Evelyn's mouth closed.
Rachel recognized the wall coming down again.
"This is where you decide whether Maddie matters more than your fear."
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
"Do not lecture me about caring for that child."
Rachel's expression changed.
"That child?"
Evelyn heard it too.
"I didn't mean -"
"You sound exactly like Grant at dinner."
"I am under pressure."
"So was he."
Rachel stepped closer.
"Apparently pressure reveals the language this family uses when blood becomes inconvenient."
Evelyn stood.
"Get out."
"Not until you tell me what you saw."
"I said get out."
Rachel pulled out her phone.
"Then I will let Julia subpoena every employment record Northlake has with your name on it."
Evelyn froze.
Rachel had guessed.
The reaction told her the guess was useful.
"There are records you do not want found."
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"You don't understand what Adrian could do."
"He is a retired doctor with lawyers."
"He was more than that."
"What?"
Evelyn looked toward the windows as if someone might be listening outside.
"Northlake was built with Bennett money."
Rachel blinked.
"What?"
"Thomas's father invested in the clinic."
"Grant never mentioned that."
"Grant doesn't know."
Rachel stared.
Evelyn continued.
"The Bennett family trust owned a silent interest for almost twenty years."
"So your family profited from the clinic."
"Indirectly."
"And you worked there."
"Yes."
"And you were a patient."
"Yes."
Rachel felt the pieces moving into a shape she hated.
"What did you see?"
Evelyn covered her face with both hands.
When she lowered them, she looked defeated.
"A donor log."
"What was wrong with it?"
"The same private code appeared too many times."
Rachel's heart hammered.
"AV-P13?"
Evelyn nodded.
"When?"
"1999."
"That is more than twenty years before Maddie."
"I know."
"What did you do?"
Evelyn looked down.
"I asked Adrian."
"And?"
"He told me it was a research control entry."
"Did you believe him?"
"No."
"What did you do next?"
Evelyn's voice became so quiet Rachel almost missed it.
"I copied the log."
Rachel stopped breathing.
"Where is the copy?"
Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.
"I hid it."
"Where?"
"In Thomas's safe."
"Where is it now?"
Evelyn's eyes met hers.
"Gone."
"Who took it?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"Adrian."
"How?"
"Because I gave it to him."
Rachel stared at her.
"Why would you do that?"
Evelyn began to cry.
"Because he showed me Grant's real conception record."
Rachel felt a chill move across her skin.
"And what did it say?"
May you like
Evelyn looked at Thomas's photograph.
"It said the sample used to conceive my son was AV-P13."
