Chapter 14 - The Sister Maddie Never Knew

Emily Ross lived in Oregon now, but she answered Julia's email within twenty minutes.

She agreed to a video call that evening.

Rachel expected someone angry.

Instead Emily looked tired.

She was thirty-five, with dark hair cut to her shoulders and the same heavy eyelids Rachel had noticed across the sibling photographs.

Grant stared at her on the screen.

Emily noticed.

"You see him, don't you?"

Grant nodded slowly.

"A little."

"I see him in you too."

The sentence made Grant flinch.

Emily softened.

"Sorry."

"No."

Grant rubbed his hands together.

"I'm still getting used to everyone seeing a man in my face I spent my life thinking was someone else."

Emily nodded.

"I know that feeling."

Rachel sat beside Grant but slightly apart.

They were united by the investigation, not reconciled as a couple.

That distinction mattered more each day.

Julia asked Emily about the recording.

Emily leaned back.

"I made it in 2019."

"Where?"

"Vale's office."

"Did he know he was being recorded?"

"No."

Julia asked where the meeting occurred and explained that admissibility would depend on applicable law and context.

Emily nodded.

"I didn't make it for court."

"Why did you make it?"

"Because he lied so smoothly the first time I met him that I wanted proof for myself."

Rachel understood.

"What did he say?"

Emily looked toward someone off camera, then back.

"You should hear it."

She played the file.

Adrian Vale's voice was older than Rachel remembered but unmistakable.

Emily's recorded voice asked whether he was her biological father.

Vale answered with a question.

"Did you have a good childhood?"

Emily asked again.

Vale sighed.

"Biology is not a contract, Emily."

"My mother signed a contract."

There was a pause.

"Your mother signed for a healthy donor conception."

"Not for your sperm."

Another pause followed.

Vale's voice became colder.

"She wanted a child."

"That isn't consent."

"You exist."

Rachel felt her stomach twist.

Emily's recorded voice shook with anger.

"How many?"

Vale did not answer.

"How many children did you create this way?"

He laughed softly.

"You are asking the wrong question."

"What is the right question?"

"How many families would have had nothing without me?"

The recording ended there.

No one on the current call spoke for several seconds.

Grant looked physically ill.

"He thought he was helping."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"He thought wanting a child gave him permission to decide everything else."

Rachel looked at Grant.

The parallel was uncomfortable.

Vale believed his intention erased other people's consent.

Grant had believed his humiliation gave him permission to erase Maddie's place in the family for one terrible moment.

The scale was different.

The pattern was not.

Grant seemed to understand what Rachel was thinking.

He looked away.

Emily continued.

"Thomas believed me."

"You met him?"

Grant asked.

"Once."

Grant sat up.

"You met my father?"

"In 2019."

"Where?"

"A diner halfway between my mother's town and his."

Grant's eyes filled.

"What was he like?"

Emily smiled faintly.

"Scared."

Grant blinked.

"Thomas Bennett?"

"Terrified."

Emily's smile disappeared.

"He had just learned the man he raised as his son might have been conceived through a substitution he never authorized."

Grant stared at the screen.

"Did he talk about me?"

"Almost the entire time."

Grant looked down.

Emily continued.

"He kept saying one thing."

"What?"

"I don't want Grant to think this changes who his father is."

Grant covered his mouth.

Rachel looked away.

Emily waited until he lowered his hand.

"He loved you."

"I know."

Grant's voice broke.

"I just wish I had known he was trying to tell me."

Emily nodded.

"He also believed Vale's conduct was bigger than us."

"How many siblings had you found then?"

"Nine."

"There are at least twenty-three now."

"More."

Rachel looked up.

"How many?"

Emily shared a spreadsheet on screen.

Thirty-eight cases appeared.

Rachel stared.

"The clinic said twenty-three."

"Those are the ones linked to the known code or database cluster."

Emily pointed at several rows.

"These families have incomplete records or different donor numbers but still match the Vale family."

"Thirty-eight."

"Confirmed or highly probable."

"Could there be more?"

Emily's expression said yes before she spoke.

"A lot more."

Grant leaned back.

"How many samples did P13 produce?"

"No one knows."

"The ledger showed renewals for decades."

"Exactly."

Rachel asked about medical history.

Emily had built a voluntary registry because the donor profiles were unreliable.

Several siblings had autoimmune conditions.

Two had the same benign heart rhythm abnormality.

One had a clotting disorder inherited from the maternal side and unrelated to Vale.

Emily was careful not to turn coincidence into panic.

"The biggest medical problem isn't that we found one terrible disease."

"What is it?"

"It's that none of us can trust the family histories we were given."

Rachel thought of every pediatric form where she had written No Known Paternal History based on a glossy donor profile.

"Can Maddie's pediatrician use the registry?"

"Yes, if you want."

"I do."

Emily nodded.

"I'll send the physician summary."

Grant asked whether Emily had ever confronted Evelyn.

Emily's expression changed.

"Once."

Rachel looked at Grant.

"When?"

"After Thomas died."

Grant stared at the screen.

"You met my mother?"

"I called her."

"What did she say?"

Emily hesitated.

"You may not want to hear it."

Grant gave a tired laugh.

"That warning has lost all meaning this week."

Emily looked directly at him.

"She told me to stop calling myself Thomas Bennett's family."

Grant's face hardened.

"Why would you?"

"I wasn't."

"Then why did she say that?"

"Because I told her Adrian Vale was my father and that Thomas had helped me."

Emily paused.

"She said whatever blood I shared with you did not make me a Bennett."

Rachel closed her eyes.

The obsession again.

The same woman who knew Grant himself was not biologically Bennett had guarded the name from another Vale child.

Grant's voice went flat.

"She knew I wasn't Thomas's biological son when she said that to you."

"I believe so."

"Then none of it was ever about blood."

Rachel looked at him.

"It was about control over who was allowed to count."

Grant sat very still.

That sentence seemed to reach him.

Emily changed the subject.

"There is something else Thomas gave me."

She held up a manila envelope.

"He said if he died before he could finish the investigation, I should keep this away from Evelyn and Vale."

Grant leaned toward the screen.

"What is it?"

"Bennett trust payment records."

Rachel's pulse quickened.

"The financial connection to Northlake."

"Yes."

Emily opened the envelope.

"Thomas believed his father paid Vale personally from 1987 through 2003."

"For what?"

"The payments were coded as research consulting."

"Were they?"

Emily shook her head.

"Thomas found a handwritten note attached to one transfer."

"What did it say?"

Emily lifted a photocopy toward the camera.

The image was blurry, but the words were visible.

Family matter - keep E.B. and boy protected.

Grant stared at it.

"My grandfather paid Vale to keep my parentage secret."

Emily nodded slowly.

"That is what Thomas believed."

Rachel felt another piece lock into place.

Evelyn had not created the family obsession with blood.

She had inherited a system built to preserve appearances at almost any cost.

But she had also chosen to continue it.

Before the call ended, Emily gave Julia permission to copy Thomas's materials.

Then she asked Rachel to stay on the line alone.

Grant looked surprised but left the room.

Emily waited until the door closed.

"There is something you need to know about Grant."

Rachel's stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Thomas told me Grant met Vale before your daughter was conceived."

"I know that now."

"Did Grant tell you what Vale offered him?"

"Money toward treatment."

Emily shook her head.

"Not just money."

Rachel went still.

"What else?"

"Vale promised Grant that if he used Northlake, he would personally make sure the donor was 'as close to family as possible.'"

Rachel stared at the screen.

"What does that mean?"

Emily's face was grim.

"Thomas thought it meant Vale was offering to select a donor related to the Bennetts."

Rachel felt sick.

"Grant never told me that."

"Then ask him why."

Rachel looked toward the closed door.

May you like

For the first time, she wondered whether Grant had not merely walked into Vale's trap.

Maybe he had wanted something from Vale badly enough to ignore what the promise could mean.
