Chapter 3: The Secret They Had Hidden for Years
Lily remained unconscious for nearly six hours.
Marcus never left the hospital.

Late that afternoon, the attending physician finally walked into the waiting room.
"She's waking up."
Relief nearly knocked me to my knees.
When I entered the room, Lily reached weakly for my hand.
"Mommy..."
"I'm here, baby."
She blinked slowly.
"Grandma said we were playing a hiding game."
My heart broke.
"What happened after that?"
"She gave me juice."
"I got really sleepy."
Lily closed her eyes for a moment before whispering,
"I wanted to come find you..."
"...but I couldn't keep my eyes open."
The physician quietly informed detectives that the laboratory report showed traces of a strong prescription sleep medication in Lily's system.

But it was enough to make a healthy child unable to stay awake.
The detective immediately requested search warrants for the house.
