Chapter 2: The Camera That Was Never Meant to Exist

Detectives secured the property before allowing anyone to leave.

While officers photographed the backyard, Marcus suddenly remembered something.

"The neighbor."

Everyone looked at him.

"The Hendersons installed new security cameras facing their driveway last month."

One detective immediately crossed the street.

Within twenty minutes he returned carrying a flash drive.

The entire family was gathered inside the living room as the footage played.

At 6:41 a.m...

The video showed my mother walking toward the side yard holding Lily's hand.

Lily looked sleepy, still hugging her stuffed rabbit.

Then Vanessa appeared carrying a small juice box.

She knelt beside Lily, smiling warmly.

Lily drank from it.

Less than two minutes later...

She stumbled.

My mother caught her before she fell.

The little girl barely seemed able to stand.

The room became painfully quiet.

Next, my father rolled one of the large outdoor trash containers away from the wall.

Together...

The three adults disappeared behind it.

Only one minute later they returned.

Without Lily.

My father calmly wheeled the container back into place.

Then everyone walked inside the house as though nothing unusual had happened.

The detective stopped the video.

"No one touches anything."

My mother finally spoke.

"You don't understand."

May you like

"No," the detective replied.

"I think we're beginning to."
