Chapter 1: The First Question

The officer's eyes never left Lily as the paramedics rushed her toward the ambulance.

Finally, he looked at me.

"Who found her?"

"I did," I answered, my voice shaking. "She was inside that dumpster."

The officer slowly turned toward my parents.

"Does anyone here have an explanation?"

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa folded her arms.

My father stared at the ground.

My mother quietly wiped her hands with a kitchen towel, as though she had simply finished preparing breakfast.

"It was probably an accident," she said calmly.

Marcus's jaw clenched.

"Explain how a four-year-old accidentally ends up inside a locked commercial dumpster."

No answer.

Another officer approached carrying a small pink sneaker.

"We found this about fifteen feet away."

My stomach twisted.

It was Lily's missing shoe.

The lead officer asked everyone to remain on the property while detectives were called.

That was when Emma, Vanessa's six-year-old daughter, tugged gently on the officer's sleeve.

"I know where Lily went."

Every adult froze.

The officer knelt.

"Can you tell me?"

Emma nodded.

"Aunt Vanessa said Lily was sleepy."

Vanessa's face instantly lost its color.

"Emma, sweetheart, you're confused."

Emma frowned.

"No, Mommy."

"You said Lily needed a long nap so she wouldn't ruin my birthday."

The silence became suffocating.

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"You planned another birthday party today."

"It wasn't like that."

"Then tell us exactly what it was like."

May you like

For the first time all morning...

Vanessa couldn't find a single word.
