Chapter 5: A Birthday Worth Remembering
Three months later...
The same dining room looked completely different.
Fresh flowers filled the table.
Warm lights glowed across the walls.
Family photographs had replaced expensive decorations.
At the center sat a new birthday cake.
Daniel carried it toward Emily with a smile.
Their closest friends surrounded the table.
Claire had apologized and rebuilt her relationship with Emily.
Margaret was absent.
She had moved into a small apartment across town after losing every attempt to challenge the eviction.
She sent several letters asking for forgiveness.
Emily read every one.
She answered none.
Some apologies arrive years too late.
Daniel placed the cake in front of his wife.
He knelt beside her exactly where she had once knelt alone.
Only this time...
He held her hand.
"I'm sorry it took me so long to see."
Emily smiled through quiet tears.
"You see me now."
"Every day."
Everyone began singing Happy Birthday.
When the song ended, Daniel stepped back.
"This time," he said softly, "no one will stop you."
Emily closed her eyes.
She made a wish.
Then she blew out every candle.
The room erupted in applause.
The cake remained exactly where it belonged.

For the first time in years, Emily understood that the greatest gift was not revenge.
It was finally living in a home where she never had to earn kindness again.
