Chapter 3: The Family Dinner
Two evenings later Daniel invited the entire family to dinner.
Margaret arrived wearing her usual confident smile.
His sister Claire sat beside her.
Several relatives filled the dining room.
Margaret assumed Daniel wanted to apologize.
Instead...
The television lowered from the ceiling.
Daniel connected his laptop.
"I have something everyone needs to see."
Margaret frowned.
"What are you doing?"
The first video played.
The birthday cake.
The shove.
Emily falling to her knees.
The room became silent.
Then came another recording.
The slap.
Another.
The destroyed gifts.
Another.
Margaret insulting Emily while believing nobody was watching.
Claire's face turned white.
"You told us Emily was lying..."
Margaret whispered,
"Those cameras don't have sound."
Daniel answered,
"They don't need sound."
He pressed pause.
"The truth has been speaking for years."
One by one, relatives stood up.
Nobody defended Margaret.
Nobody looked at her.
Emily sat quietly beside Daniel.
