Chapter 2: The Hidden Camera
That night, Daniel couldn't sleep.
Every memory suddenly felt different.
Emily insisting she wasn't hungry.
Emily claiming she preferred eating after everyone else.
Emily apologizing whenever his mother criticized her.
He had mistaken survival for kindness.
At three in the morning, he entered his home office.
Months earlier he had installed security cameras after expensive jewelry disappeared during a family gathering.
The cameras covered nearly every common room.
He had forgotten about them.
Until now.
He rewound the footage from earlier that afternoon.
Emily smiled as she carefully carried her birthday cake into the dining room.
Margaret stood.
Without warning...
She deliberately shoved the cake off the stand.
The cake exploded across the marble.
Emily gasped.
Then something even worse happened.
Margaret leaned close enough that only Emily could hear.
The camera had no sound.
But Daniel could read her lips.
"You don't deserve celebrations in my house."
Emily lowered herself onto the floor without arguing.
Then Margaret sat back down...
and smiled.
Daniel's breathing slowed.
His hands trembled over the keyboard.
He searched older recordings.
One week earlier—
Margaret secretly threw away Emily's birthday gifts before Daniel returned home.
Two weeks earlier—
She deliberately spilled soup onto Emily's dress before guests arrived.
One month earlier—
She slapped Emily across the face after accusing her of disrespect.
Every single time...
Emily covered for her.
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
He realized the truth wasn't one terrible afternoon.
May you like
It was years of quiet cruelty.
And he had never seen it.
