Chapter 3 – The Founder Speaks

Chapter 3 – The Founder Speaks
Arthur Whitlock crossed the ballroom without acknowledging anyone.
Not Patricia.
Not Andrew.
Only Clara.
He stopped in front of her.
Then smiled.
"I'm sorry you had to experience this."
The guests exchanged stunned glances.
Patricia hurried toward him.
"Dad, tell them this is ridiculous."
Arthur slowly turned.
"You've embarrassed this family for the last time."
Silence.
"You rejected the only person willing to save everything we built."
Andrew looked between them.
"You knew?"
Arthur nodded.
"When our company was collapsing..."
"Every investor walked away."
"Except Clara."
Andrew stared at Clara.
"You invested?"
She answered quietly.
"I didn't invest."
"I prevented hundreds of employees from losing their jobs."
Arthur continued.
"She never asked for recognition."
"She asked that every employee keep their pension."
Several staff members lowered their heads, holding back tears.
Patricia's voice shook.
"You chose her over your own family?"
Arthur looked directly at her.
"No."
"You forced me to."
Then he removed the Whitlock family signet ring.
And placed it in Clara's hand.
The symbolic transfer happened without another word.
But someone in the back of the ballroom had quietly been recording everything.
