Chapter 2 - THE HEARTBEAT BEHIND THE WALL

The maternal trauma unit had no windows.

Its pale walls were designed to calm frightened families.

To Marcus, they felt like the walls of a sealed vault.

He stood outside the examination room while doctors worked on Khloe.

The fetal monitor sounded through the closed door.

Each rapid beat belonged to the daughter he had not yet held.

Each pause between those beats felt long enough to destroy him.

A nurse had asked him to wait outside during the ultrasound.

He had nearly refused.

Khloe had been the one to persuade him.

“Let them work.”

Her face had been white.

Her voice had trembled.

Still, she had worried about making their job harder.

That was Khloe.

Even while lying in pain, she thought about everyone else in the room.

Marcus pressed both hands against the back of his neck.

He replayed the suite in his mind.

Khloe on the floor.

Isabella standing over her.

The shattered glass.

The accusation.

She attacked me.

He had known Isabella for most of his life.

Their families had shared summer estates, private schools, charity boards, and business dinners.

She had always been manipulative.

He had never believed she was capable of attacking a pregnant woman.

He had been wrong.

The door opened.

Dr. Naomi Reed stepped into the corridor.

She was a maternal trauma specialist in her early forties.

Her expression revealed little.

Marcus searched her eyes.

“Is the baby alive?”

“Yes.”

The word nearly took his knees from beneath him.

He braced one hand against the wall.

Naomi continued.

“The fetal heartbeat has stabilized.”

“Khloe has significant bruising along her right side and lower back.”

“We do not see evidence of placental separation at this time.”

“At this time?”

“We need to monitor her closely.”

“There were several contractions after the impact.”

“She is only thirty weeks.”

“I know.”

Marcus looked through the narrow window in the door.

Khloe lay beneath a white blanket.

A monitor rested beside her.

“Can I see her?”

“In a moment.”

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Naomi paused.

“There is a small amount of internal bleeding near the uterine wall.”

“It may resolve without intervention.”

“It may also worsen.”

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“What happens if it worsens?”

“We deliver the baby.”

“Tonight?”

“If necessary.”

“And if she cannot survive delivery?”

Naomi looked directly at him.

“We are not there.”

“That was not my question.”

“No.”

“It was not.”

She took a breath.

“Our priority is to protect both of them.”

“We have blood prepared.”

“The neonatal team is standing by.”

“Your wife is receiving the best care available.”

Marcus looked down the corridor.

His entire fortune could purchase aircraft, companies, buildings, and influence.

It could not guarantee the survival of the two people behind that door.

“Can she hear me?”

“Yes.”

Naomi opened the door.

Marcus entered slowly.

Khloe looked smaller beneath the hospital blanket.

Her makeup had been removed.

A faint line of pain remained between her eyebrows.

Wires crossed the bed.

One monitor displayed her pulse.

Another displayed the baby’s heartbeat.

Marcus sat beside her.

Khloe reached for his hand.

He held it carefully.

“She’s still here.”

Marcus looked at the monitor.

“She is.”

Khloe’s eyes filled.

“I thought I lost her.”

“You didn’t.”

“What if the doctors are wrong?”

“They’re watching everything.”

“What if something happens when they look away?”

Marcus leaned closer.

“They are not going to look away.”

She studied him.

He had always been controlled in public.

He could negotiate a billion-dollar acquisition without changing his breathing.

Now his eyes were red.

His bow tie hung loose around his collar.

A streak of dust marked one knee of his tuxedo trousers where he had knelt beside her.

“Did they take Isabella?”

“Your uncle kept her in the building.”

“Marcus.”

Khloe tightened her fingers around his.

“She did not just lose control.”

“I know.”

“She knew where to find me.”

“I know.”

“She knew the suite would be empty.”

Marcus said nothing.

Khloe watched him.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

He could have lied.

He could have said he knew nothing.

He could have waited until he had proof.

Their marriage had already suffered from too many carefully chosen silences.

“Isabella said something to Adrian.”

“What?”

“She asked what happens to Thorne Meridian if our child is never born.”

Khloe’s face changed.

The monitor beside her accelerated.

Marcus squeezed her hand.

“Breathe.”

“Why would she say that?”

“I don’t know.”

“That is not true.”

“Khloe.”

“You know what it means.”

Marcus looked toward the door.

No one stood close enough to hear.

“My father’s estate includes a controlling trust.”

“I know that.”

“You know the public version.”

Khloe’s gaze hardened.

“What is the private version?”

Marcus leaned forward.

“My father wanted the company to remain under direct family control.”

“The voting shares are divided between me, Damian, and the future generation.”

“Our child?”

“Yes.”

“She does not own anything yet.”

“The trust activates at birth.”

Khloe stared at him.

“How much?”

“Twelve percent of Thorne Meridian’s controlling vote.”

Her hand went still.

“And until she is born?”

“The shares remain in temporary custody.”

“Whose custody?”

“The board’s.”

Khloe understood before he finished.

“The merger vote.”

Marcus nodded.

Thorne Meridian had been negotiating a major acquisition involving Rossi Capital.

Marcus opposed Vittorio Rossi’s latest terms.

Damian supported them.

The board had been divided for months.

Khloe’s inherited foundation shares gave Marcus enough support to block the deal.

Once their daughter was born, the family trust would secure that control for another generation.

Without the child, the board could redistribute the temporary shares before the next vote.

“Isabella did this for a corporate merger?”

“I don’t know.”

“She kicked me while I was protecting our daughter.”

Khloe’s voice broke.

“You knew our baby controlled those shares.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was going to explain before the board meeting.”

“The meeting is in four days.”

“I wanted to protect you from this.”

“By keeping me ignorant?”

“By keeping business away from our family.”

“It followed us into a hospital room.”

Marcus absorbed the words without defending himself.

Khloe turned her face away.

He had imagined many dangers during the pregnancy.

Medical complications.

Travel risks.

The pressure of public attention.

He had never imagined that his own family trust would place a target on his wife.

“I am sorry.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“That does not fix this.”

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

A soft knock came at the door.

Adrian entered.

He had removed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves.

Detective Lena Ortiz followed him.

She was a compact woman with dark hair pulled into a low ponytail.

Her expression was professional, but not cold.

Marcus stood.

“Why is a detective here?”

“Because the recording shows an intentional assault,” Adrian said.

Khloe looked at her uncle.

“You saw it?”

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

Adrian hesitated.

“The main incident.”

“What does that mean?”

“The video clearly shows Isabella pushing you into the table.”

“It also shows the second contact that caused you to fall.”

Khloe’s fingers moved protectively over her stomach.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Then arrest her.”

Ortiz answered.

“We are preparing the complaint.”

“Preparing?”

“Ms. Rossi has counsel present.”

“Her father’s legal team arrived before I did.”

“That changes nothing.”

“It changes how carefully we must proceed.”

Marcus took one step toward her.

“My wife is lying in a trauma bed.”

“My daughter may be delivered ten weeks early.”

“And the woman who did this is sitting in a conference room with attorneys.”

Ortiz did not retreat.

“That is why I need a statement that cannot be weakened later.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“Let me speak.”

He returned to her side.

Ortiz activated a recorder.

Khloe described leaving the gala.

She explained that Isabella followed her.

She repeated the words Isabella had spoken.

Smile for the cameras.

Give him an heir.

Then disappear.

She described the shove.

The table.

The glass.

The stiletto striking her side.

Her voice remained steady until she described protecting the baby.

Then she stopped.

Marcus took her hand again.

Ortiz waited.

Khloe continued.

When the statement ended, Ortiz turned off the recorder.

“There is one more question.”

“Did Isabella mention anyone else?”

“No.”

“Did she receive a call or message?”

“Not while I was conscious.”

Adrian looked toward Marcus.

“Elaine saw a message afterward.”

“What message?”

Marcus asked.

Adrian answered carefully.

“It asked whether Khloe had lost the baby.”

Marcus stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall.

“Who sent it?”

“We do not know.”

“Take her phone.”

“Her attorneys claim it is privileged business property.”

“I do not care what they claim.”

Ortiz raised a hand.

“We are obtaining a warrant.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“There is more.”

Adrian nodded.

“Someone locked the suite door remotely.”

Khloe stared at him.

Marcus became motionless.

“What credential?”

Adrian did not want to answer in front of Khloe.

She saw the hesitation.

“Tell me.”

“The system says Marcus’s executive badge was used.”

Khloe looked at her husband.

Marcus’s face showed genuine shock.

“My badge was in my pocket all night.”

“Could it have been copied?” Ortiz asked.

“Executive credentials are encrypted.”

“Who has access to the encryption?”

Marcus’s answer came slowly.

“My security director.”

“Hospital administration.”

“And Thorne Meridian’s chief financial officer.”

Khloe whispered the name.

“Damian.”

Marcus turned toward the dark monitor screen on the opposite wall.

His half-brother had attended the gala.

Damian had left the ballroom twenty minutes before Marcus.

He had claimed he was taking a call from Singapore.

Marcus reached for his phone.

Adrian stopped him.

“Do not warn anyone.”

“I am not warning him.”

“You need proof.”

“I need to know where he is.”

Ortiz’s phone vibrated.

She read the incoming message.

Her expression sharpened.

“The warrant for Isabella’s phone was approved.”

Marcus looked at her.

“How long?”

“We already have the device.”

A technician entered several minutes later with a sealed evidence bag.

He handed Ortiz a printed extraction report.

“Most recent messages are intact.”

“Anything from the unknown number?”

“Yes.”

“The sender used an encrypted relay.”

“Can you trace it?”

“Eventually.”

“What did the messages say?”

The technician glanced toward Khloe.

Ortiz took the report.

Her eyes moved down the page.

The first message had been sent thirty-seven minutes before the attack.

GET HER ALONE.

The second came twelve minutes later.

THE CAMERA IS HANDLED.

The third appeared one minute before Marcus entered.

MAKE SURE SHE FALLS.

Khloe’s breathing changed.

Marcus reached for her.

The monitor began issuing a warning tone.

Naomi rushed into the room.

“You need to leave.”

Marcus refused to release Khloe’s hand.

Naomi adjusted the medication line.

“Her contractions are returning.”

Adrian guided Ortiz toward the door.

Marcus remained until Khloe looked at him.

“Find out who did this.”

“I will.”

“Do not protect your family from me again.”

Marcus lowered his forehead to hers.

“I will burn down every lie they built.”

A nurse pushed him gently toward the hall.

The door closed.

Inside, doctors surrounded Khloe.

Outside, Ortiz studied the final page of the phone extraction.

“There is another message.”

Marcus looked at her.

“It came after Isabella was placed in the conference room.”

The message contained a photograph.

It showed Marcus standing close to Isabella on a private terrace six weeks earlier.

His hand appeared to rest against her waist.

Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.

WHEN KHLOE WAKES UP, SHOW HER WHAT HER HUSBAND HAS BEEN HIDING.
