Chapter 1 - THE MAN IN THE DOORWAY

Marcus Thorne did not hear Isabella’s accusation.

He saw only his wife curled on the marble floor.

Khloe’s white maternity dress had twisted around her legs.

One hand pressed against her side.

The other covered the curve of her stomach as though her body were the only shield left between their unborn child and the rest of the world.

For one suspended second, Marcus could not breathe.

Then he crossed the suite.

He moved past Isabella without looking at her.

He dropped to his knees beside Khloe, careful not to touch her until he knew where she was hurt.

“Khloe, look at me.”

Khloe opened her eyes.

The terror inside them struck him harder than any scream could have.

“The baby.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Something is wrong.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

He removed his tuxedo jacket, folded it, and placed it beneath her head.

Behind him, Isabella began to cry.

“She came at me.”

Marcus did not turn.

“She lost her balance.”

Elaine Parker remained near the open door.

The event coordinator had spent fifteen years managing disasters for wealthy families.

Drunken arguments.

Broken engagements.

Public scandals.

Guests collapsing after drinking too much champagne.

Nothing had prepared her for the sight in front of her.

She had seen Isabella standing over Khloe.

She had seen the fury on Isabella’s face before it transformed into fear.

Elaine slowly reached for the emergency button beside the door.

Isabella noticed.

“Don’t.”

Elaine’s hand stopped.

Isabella’s voice had lost its trembling softness.

For the briefest moment, the real woman returned.

Then Marcus turned his head.

Isabella immediately lowered her eyes.

Elaine pressed the button.

A sharp alarm sounded in the hall.

Marcus leaned closer to Khloe.

“Stay with me.”

Khloe drew a shallow breath.

“I tried to make her leave.”

“I know.”

“She said I was supposed to disappear.”

Marcus’s jaw hardened.

Isabella stepped toward them.

“She’s confused.”

Marcus finally looked at her.

The expression in his eyes stopped Isabella where she stood.

“Take one more step toward my wife.”

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Terrifyingly calm.

“And you will regret it for the rest of your life.”

Isabella’s lips parted.

Before she could answer, two nurses rushed into the suite.

A doctor followed with a rolling emergency cart.

The medical team moved quickly.

One nurse knelt beside Khloe.

Another asked Marcus to move back.

He obeyed, but only by several inches.

“What happened?”

The doctor’s eyes moved between the people in the room.

“She fell,” Isabella said immediately.

“She was pushed,” Elaine said at the same time.

Silence cut through the suite.

Isabella stared at Elaine.

Elaine swallowed but did not look away.

The doctor focused on Khloe.

“Where does it hurt?”

“My side.”

Khloe’s fingers tightened over her stomach.

“And lower.”

The nurse attached a portable fetal monitor.

Everyone waited.

The machine searched.

Marcus watched the screen.

A second passed.

Then another.

No sound came from the speaker.

Khloe’s eyes filled with panic.

“Why can’t I hear her?”

The nurse adjusted the sensor.

“Please stay still.”

“Why can’t I hear my baby?”

Marcus reached for Khloe’s hand.

The machine emitted a burst of static.

Then a rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Khloe closed her eyes.

Marcus bowed his head over her fingers.

The heartbeat was fast.

Too fast.

The doctor looked at the monitor and made a decision.

“We need to move her to maternal emergency care.”

The nurses transferred Khloe onto a stretcher.

She cried out when they lifted her.

Marcus stayed beside her.

Isabella moved toward the door.

Elaine stepped into her path.

“You’re not leaving.”

Isabella’s expression hardened.

“You have no authority over me.”

“No.”

A new voice came from the hallway.

“But I do.”

Dr. Adrian Vale stood beyond the suite entrance.

He was fifty-five, broad-shouldered, and still wearing the charcoal suit he had worn while speaking to donors downstairs.

A silver hospital identification badge rested against his chest.

Most gala guests knew him as the chief medical officer of St. Catherine Medical Center.

Khloe knew him as the man who had taken her to school after her mother died.

The man who had attended every graduation.

The man who had walked her down the aisle because her father had not lived long enough to do it.

Adrian’s gaze went directly to Khloe.

The controlled authority in his face fractured.

“Sweetheart.”

Khloe reached toward him.

“Uncle Adrian.”

He took her hand for only a moment.

Then he stepped aside so the medical team could move her.

“Take her to Maternal Trauma Two.”

The doctor nodded.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Go with her.”

Marcus hesitated.

His attention shifted to Isabella.

Adrian understood.

“I will handle this room.”

Marcus leaned down and kissed Khloe’s forehead.

He walked beside the stretcher as it disappeared into the hall.

The fetal monitor continued sounding beneath the hurried footsteps.

Isabella waited until the elevator doors closed.

Then she lifted her chin.

“This has been exaggerated.”

Adrian entered the suite.

Elaine closed the door behind him.

Shattered crystal remained scattered across the floor.

The marble table had shifted several inches from its original position.

Adrian studied the room with the precision of a physician and the anger of an uncle.

“What happened?”

Isabella folded her arms.

“Khloe attacked me.”

Elaine shook her head.

“That is not what I saw.”

“You arrived after she fell.”

“I arrived before Marcus.”

“You saw nothing.”

“I saw you standing over her.”

“That proves nothing.”

Adrian looked at Elaine.

“Tell me exactly what you witnessed.”

Elaine described the open door.

The broken glass.

Khloe on the floor.

Isabella standing above her.

The sudden change in Isabella’s expression when Marcus appeared.

She spoke carefully.

She did not add details she could not prove.

She did not need to.

Adrian turned toward the small black camera mounted above the suite entrance.

A red light blinked behind the tinted cover.

Isabella followed his gaze.

Her face changed.

It was subtle.

A tightening around the mouth.

A brief widening of the eyes.

Then the calm returned.

“That camera is for hallway security.”

“It records the suite entrance.”

Adrian walked toward the door.

“The lens angle includes most of this room.”

Isabella gave a brittle laugh.

“This is a private medical suite.”

“It becomes a monitored safety area during major hospital events.”

“You cannot record patients without consent.”

“Khloe signed the event security consent form this afternoon.”

Adrian took out his phone.

He called the hospital security director.

“Owen, preserve every recording from the executive suite corridor.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“You cannot do that.”

Adrian continued speaking.

“Lock the files.”

She moved closer.

“Dr. Vale.”

“Restrict access to me, legal counsel, and law enforcement.”

Adrian ended the call.

Isabella’s face lost its practiced fragility.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

“My father is the largest private donor this hospital has.”

“Your father’s money does not purchase the right to hurt my niece.”

“You are making assumptions.”

“The recording will decide that.”

Isabella reached into her evening bag.

Elaine stiffened.

Isabella removed her phone.

Adrian held out his hand.

“Put it down.”

“You cannot take my property.”

“I can prevent you from deleting evidence inside a secured incident area.”

“I have deleted nothing.”

“Then you have nothing to fear.”

Isabella stared at him.

A notification appeared on her screen.

Elaine stood close enough to see part of it.

The message came from an unsaved number.

It contained only five words.

DID SHE LOSE THE BABY?

Isabella quickly locked the screen.

Elaine’s breath caught.

Adrian noticed.

“What did you see?”

“Nothing,” Isabella said.

Elaine looked at her.

“It asked about the baby.”

For the first time, Isabella appeared genuinely frightened.

She pushed past Elaine and reached for the door.

Adrian blocked her.

“You are staying until security arrives.”

Isabella’s voice dropped.

“You think this is about jealousy?”

“What is it about?”

“You should ask Marcus.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What should I ask him?”

Isabella smiled.

It was not a confident smile.

It was the smile of someone who had just remembered she still possessed a weapon.

“Ask him what happens to Thorne Meridian if Khloe’s child is never born.”

Security officers arrived less than a minute later.

Adrian ordered them to escort Isabella to a private conference room.

She demanded an attorney.

She threatened the hospital.

She invoked her father’s name.

None of it changed Adrian’s decision.

When she was gone, Elaine lowered herself into a chair.

Her hands had begun to shake.

Adrian crouched beside the broken glass.

He saw the security camera reflected in one of the larger crystal fragments.

“You did the right thing.”

Elaine looked toward the hallway.

“I don’t think she acted alone.”

Adrian stood.

“What makes you say that?”

“I saw someone outside the suite before Marcus arrived.”

“Who?”

“I couldn’t see his face.”

Elaine closed her eyes, trying to reconstruct the moment.

“He was near the service elevator.”

“He wore a black tuxedo.”

“Half the men downstairs were wearing black tuxedos.”

“This one had a silver cuff link shaped like a crown.”

Adrian became still.

The Thorne family emblem was a silver crown divided by a narrow vertical line.

Marcus wore plain black cuff links.

Only one other man at the gala had worn the old family crest.

Marcus’s younger half-brother.

Damian Thorne.

Adrian’s phone rang.

The hospital security director sounded confused.

“Dr. Vale, we secured the suite recording.”

“Does it show the assault?”

“Yes.”

Owen paused.

“But there is a problem.”

“What problem?”

“Someone accessed the suite security system three minutes before the incident.”

Adrian looked at the blinking camera.

“Who?”

“The authorization was issued under Marcus Thorne’s executive credential.”

Adrian felt the room turn cold.

“Was the recording deleted?”

“No.”

“Then what did they do?”

Owen hesitated.

“They locked the suite door from the outside.”

Adrian looked toward the hall where Marcus had disappeared with Khloe.

Someone had not merely expected the confrontation.

May you like

Someone had made sure Khloe could not escape it.

And according to the hospital system, that person had used her husband’s name.
