Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER BEHIND THE GLASS

Damian moved silently along the garden corridor.

Marcus watched his reflection in the bronze sculpture.

Crane continued speaking.

He did not know another armed man stood behind him.

Isabella saw Damian first.

Her face changed.

Crane followed her gaze.

Damian fired.

The bullet struck the door frame beside Crane’s shoulder.

Mara dropped.

Ortiz rushed forward.

Crane pulled Isabella in front of him.

He fired once toward the officers.

Glass shattered.

Owen moved behind the sculpture.

Marcus pulled Adrian down.

Damian entered the garden.

“Let her go.”

Crane laughed.

“You were always impatient.”

Isabella stared at Damian.

“You said you would protect me.”

Damian’s weapon remained aimed at Crane.

“I am trying.”

“No.”

Crane tightened his arm around her.

“You are trying to protect yourself.”

Ortiz shifted behind a stone planter.

“Damian, lower the weapon.”

He ignored her.

Crane smiled.

“Tell your brother why you came.”

Damian looked at Marcus.

“I tracked Crane.”

“That is not why,” Crane said.

“He came for the case.”

Marcus glanced toward the memorial plaque.

“Is that true?”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

“The evidence inside can destroy Thorne Meridian.”

“It can expose murder.”

“It can destroy thousands of employees who had nothing to do with this.”

Owen answered from behind the sculpture.

“That is what your father said twenty-one years ago.”

Damian looked toward him.

“You have been lying to us for years.”

“Yes.”

“That does not make you righteous.”

“No.”

“It makes me late.”

Crane moved closer to the door.

Isabella struggled against him.

“Stop.”

“You are hurting me.”

He pressed the weapon beneath her jaw.

“You were useful when you were beautiful and obedient.”

“You became dangerous when you confused rage with intelligence.”

Her expression shattered.

Vittorio had treated her as an asset.

Crane treated her as disposable.

Damian had promised her a future.

Now none of the men who used her intended to save her.

“Damian.”

Isabella’s voice softened.

“Please.”

He looked at her.

Something passed between them.

Guilt.

Affection.

Perhaps only shared fear.

Damian lowered the weapon slightly.

Crane saw the weakness.

He pushed Isabella toward him.

Damian caught her.

Crane fired the final two rounds.

One struck Damian’s shoulder.

The other shattered a light above the oxygen access panel.

Sparks fell.

An alarm sounded.

Adrian looked toward the case.

“The oxygen system.”

Crane ran.

Ortiz followed him into the corridor.

Owen reached the control panel.

The transmitter light began flashing.

Marcus moved toward the steel case.

“Do not touch it,” Adrian said.

“We need to disable the signal.”

Owen opened the maintenance panel.

“There is a secondary circuit.”

“Can you cut it?”

“Not without knowing which wire triggers the transmitter.”

Mara crawled toward them.

“The black stone.”

She held it up.

“It is not only a key.”

“What is it?” Owen asked.

“A signal blocker.”

“Helena built it to disable early Asterion transmitters.”

Owen took the stone.

He placed it against the flashing panel.

The light stopped.

The alarm continued.

Adrian checked the oxygen pressure.

“System stable.”

Marcus exhaled.

Behind them, Isabella pressed both hands against Damian’s shoulder wound.

He remained conscious.

“You came back,” she whispered.

Damian looked at her.

“I came for the case.”

The honesty wounded her more deeply than a comforting lie would have.

Mara stood with Owen’s help.

“Crane wanted you to believe the case was dangerous.”

“Why?” Marcus asked.

“So we would not open it.”

Owen examined the steel container.

“No transmitter is attached.”

“The alarm came from the light he shot.”

Marcus looked at the corridor.

Crane had used fear to delay them.

Ortiz returned several minutes later.

“He escaped into the service elevator.”

“Hospital exits are sealed.”

“He knows the building.”

Adrian looked at the case.

“Open it.”

Inside were original clinical reports.

Photographs.

Bank records.

A complete copy of Helena’s investigation.

A video cassette rested beneath them.

The label contained one date.

The night before Helena died.

Mara looked at the records.

“My mother believed these were destroyed.”

“Where is Lillian?” Khloe asked through Marcus’s phone.

Mara froze.

She had not known Khloe was listening.

“Alive.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

“Mara.”

“I have not seen her in twelve years.”

“Then how do you know she is alive?”

“She sends instructions.”

“Through Crane?”

“No.”

“Through coded foundation applications.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Lillian created New Dawn.”

“Yes.”

“Was she working with Crane?”

“At first.”

Mara looked toward the files.

“She believed she could remain close to him and collect evidence.”

“Then Crane discovered her.”

“She disappeared again.”

“Why did you not tell Khloe?” Marcus asked.

Mara’s eyes filled with shame.

“Because my mother told me the Thorne and Vale families could not be trusted.”

“Khloe gave you her mother’s bracelet.”

“I know.”

“She treated you like family.”

“I know.”

“You used her foundation.”

“I was trying to complete what Helena started.”

Khloe’s voice came through the phone.

“You did not trust me enough to let me choose.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“No.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then everyone who claimed to protect me made the same mistake.”

No one answered.

Damian was taken to surgery.

The wound had missed the major artery.

Police placed a guard outside his room.

Isabella was treated for minor injuries and returned to custody.

This time, her father’s attorneys did not appear.

Vittorio issued a statement claiming he had no knowledge of his daughter’s actions.

He described her as emotionally unstable.

He withdrew financial support for her defense.

Isabella read the statement from a holding room.

Her face became blank.

Ortiz sat across from her.

“Your father has abandoned you.”

“He is protecting the company.”

“He is protecting himself.”

Isabella folded the paper.

“You want me to turn against him.”

“I want you to tell the truth.”

“The truth will not make Khloe forgive me.”

“No.”

“It will not erase what you did.”

“Then why should I help?”

“Because Crane tried to kill you.”

“Damian used you.”

“Your father is calling you unstable.”

“And Khloe’s child is still in danger.”

Isabella looked at the detective.

“What danger?”

Ortiz watched her closely.

“You tell me.”

Isabella looked toward the observation glass.

Then she leaned forward.

“The attack in the suite was not supposed to happen that way.”

“What was supposed to happen?”

“I was supposed to frighten her.”

“Push her once.”

“Make her call for medical help.”

“Who gave you those instructions?”

“Damian.”

“Did he tell you why?”

“He said Khloe would be transferred.”

“The medication system would create contractions.”

“The baby would be delivered early.”

“Why?”

“The trust required a live birth after thirty-two weeks.”

Ortiz’s expression sharpened.

“Khloe was only thirty weeks.”

“I know.”

“What happens if the child is born before thirty-two weeks?”

“The shares remain with the board for five years.”

“Damian gets the merger vote.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you kick her?”

Isabella looked down.

“She said Marcus would never love me.”

“She was right.”

“I hated her for saying it.”

“So you lost control.”

“Yes.”

Her voice became smaller.

“I wanted her to feel powerless.”

“I did not think about the baby until she fell.”

Ortiz did not offer comfort.

“Who sent the messages?”

“Crane.”

“Where is Vittorio?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was your father part of the plan?”

Isabella’s eyes lifted.

“He created it.”

Ortiz became still.

“Explain.”

“My father knew the trust language.”

“He knew the hospital system.”

“He told Damian that an early delivery would solve the board problem.”

“Crane arranged the access.”

“Damian arranged the credentials.”

“I was the visible distraction.”

“What was Mara’s role?”

“She was trying to stop it.”

“Then why did she drive you away from the estate?”

“Because my father ordered Crane to kill me.”

“Why?”

“Because I failed.”

Isabella looked toward the glass.

“He said the only safe witness was a dead one.”

Ortiz placed the confession form on the table.

“Will you testify?”

Isabella looked at her bound wrists.

“Yes.”

“Against your father?”

“Yes.”

“Against Damian?”

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.”

Ortiz turned off the recorder.

Isabella spoke again.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The trust has another condition.”

“What condition?”

“If Marcus is charged with harming Khloe or the child, he loses his shares immediately.”

Ortiz understood the false recording.

The planted fingerprint.

The forged contract.

They were not only designed to destroy the marriage.

They were designed to frame Marcus for the attack.

“Who receives his shares?”

“His closest eligible male relative.”

“Damian.”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

“Damian was never eligible.”

“Why?”

“Richard changed the trust before he died.”

“Then who is eligible?”

Isabella looked toward the observation glass.

“Samuel Crane.”

Crane was not merely the family attorney.

According to a sealed birth record, he was Richard Thorne’s older half-brother.

He had spent thirty years writing a trust designed to make himself the final heir.
