Three days later, Reid refused to speak to Evelyn.
Paige had moved into a hotel.
The future of their marriage remained uncertain.

The answer arrived unexpectedly.
An elderly woman named Margaret Dawson appeared at the estate.
She had once been Helen's closest friend.
In her hands was a small wooden box.
"I've been waiting thirty years for this day," she said.
Inside the box were dozens of letters.
Photos.
And one sealed envelope addressed to Reid.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The letter had been written by Helen just weeks before she gave birth.

If you are reading this, then life did not give me enough time to raise you.
Please never believe that I abandoned you.

Reid could barely continue reading.
Tears rolled down his face.
For the first time in his life, he felt connected to the mother he had never known.
Margaret handed him another photograph.
Helen stood smiling beneath a tree.
The same scar on her chin.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
Everything he thought came from the Whitmore family had actually come from her.
And suddenly, he understood why Paige's words at the baby shower had hurt Evelyn so deeply.

He stood outside her apartment holding the letter.

Paige stared at him for a long moment.
