CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY ERASED

Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The faded photograph trembled slightly in Paige's hands as every guest stared at Evelyn Whitmore.
For the first time in thirty years, the woman who controlled every room she entered looked powerless.
Reid slowly knelt beside the scattered documents.
His fingers found the yellowed hospital record.
He unfolded it carefully.
Then his face turned white.
"What is this?" he whispered.
Evelyn immediately lunged for the paper.
"Give that to me."
But Reid stepped back.
The document clearly listed a mother's name.
Not Evelyn Whitmore.
Helen Carter.
Date of birth: thirty-one years ago.
Mother of newborn male child: Reid Carter.
Not Reid Whitmore.
The room exploded with shocked whispers.
Paige watched as her husband's entire identity unraveled before her eyes.
"You lied to me?" Reid asked.
His voice cracked.
"You told me my entire life that you gave birth to me."
Evelyn's shoulders trembled.
"He was going to leave me."
The confession escaped before she could stop it.
Silence returned.
Every guest listened.
Every secret finally surfaced.
"Your father loved Helen," Evelyn admitted.
"She worked here as a groundskeeper's daughter."
"A nobody."
Tears filled her eyes.
"When she became pregnant, your grandfather threatened her."
Paige felt sick.
"What did you do to her?"
Evelyn lowered her head.
"We paid her to disappear."
The answer horrified everyone.
"But she refused."
Reid's breathing became uneven.
"Then what happened?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"She died during childbirth."
A gasp spread through the room.
"And when she died, I took you."
The words shattered whatever remained of the Whitmore family image.
"You stole me."
Reid stepped backward.
His voice was barely audible.
"You stole me from my mother."
No one defended Evelyn now.
Not even her closest friends.

The family album that had supposedly preserved the Whitmore legacy had actually hidden its greatest crime.
And everyone finally knew it.
