Chapter 19 - THE LAST PERSON INSIDE THE HOSPITAL

St. Catherineâs entered lockdown again.
Every employee on the neonatal floor was detained.
Visitors were searched.
Security officers swept ceilings, vents, storage rooms, and medical carts.
The photograph of Evan had been taken through the incubator glass.
The angle placed the camera less than four feet from him.
Someone with authorized access remained inside.
Adrian reviewed the staff list.
Twelve nurses.
Four physicians.
Three respiratory therapists.
Two technicians.
Six security officers.
Every person had passed a federal background check after the first sabotage.
One identity still might be false.
Khloe stood beside Evanâs incubator.
She refused to leave.
Marcus remained on the opposite side.
Daniel and Emilia stayed with Theo in another secured room.
Ortiz traced the message through a hospital communication relay.
The sender had connected through a maintenance terminal.
The terminal was located inside the old research wing.
Officers searched it.
They found no one.
A second message arrived.
GIDEON WALKS.
OR EVAN LEAVES.
The threat implied coordination with Gideon.
He sat in federal custody without phone access.
His attorney could communicate with outside contacts.
The attorney, Charles Wren, had represented Helena for twenty years.
Wren entered St. Catherineâs earlier for the guardianship hearing.
Security records showed he never officially left.
Ortiz ordered a search.
Wren was found dead inside a conference room.
No signs of violence were visible.
A small puncture mark appeared near his wrist.
Celeste Voss had used similar sedatives.
She remained in custody.
Malcolm remained in custody.
Another medical conspirator had not been identified.
Adrian checked the access logs.
One physician entered the neonatal unit twelve minutes before the photograph.
Dr. Lucas Brand.
Khloeâs obstetrician.
Lucas had recovered from the attack.
He had been cleared by federal agents.
He had also worked with Evelyn.
Khloe looked toward Adrian.
âWhere is Lucas?â
âHis office.â
Security entered it.
The room was empty.
A white coat lay across the chair.
A phone rested on the desk.
The screen displayed live video from Evanâs incubator.
Marcus felt rage rise.
Khloe saw it.
âDo not decide before we know.â
He looked at her.
She repeated the lesson he had finally begun learning.
âEvidence first.â
Ortiz examined Lucasâs phone.
The live feed came from a miniature camera hidden inside Evanâs oxygen monitor.
The camera transmitted to Lucasâs device.
That proved access.
It did not prove he installed it.
A recording application stored previous footage.
The earliest clip showed someone entering the neonatal room during a shift change.
The person wore Lucasâs coat.
The face turned briefly toward the camera.
Evelyn.
Khloe stared at her mother.
âNo.â
Adrian looked devastated.
Evelyn had visited Evan the previous evening.
She had held his hand.
She had asked everyone for privacy.
Khloe called her recovery room.
Empty.
The window was open.
A wheelchair remained beside the bed.
Blood marked the floor.
Evelynâs shoulder wound had reopened.
She had left willingly or been forced.
Another message appeared.
BRING THE LEDGER CHIP TO THE ROOF.
ONE PERSON.
KHLOE.
Marcus shook his head immediately.
âNo.â
Khloe looked toward the rooftop camera.
âEvelyn is up there.â
âIt may be a trap.â
âIt is a trap.â
âYou cannot go.â
âI can.â
âYou delivered three weeks ago.â
âI can walk.â
âThey want the chip.â
âWe give them a copy.â
âThey will verify it.â
âThen we give them the real one.â
Daniel entered.
âNo.â
Khloe looked at him.
âThe chip controls six billion dollars.â
âIt also proves thousands of crimes.â
âAnd my mother may die.â
Danielâs expression hardened.
âEvelyn made her choices.â
âSo did you.â
The words struck him.
Khloe softened slightly.
âI am not abandoning her because she failed me.â
Marcus understood.
Khloe would not become Helena either.
Ortiz created a tactical plan.
Khloe would carry the real chip inside a protective case.
A transmitter would remain beneath her clothing.
Marksmen positioned on adjacent roofs.
Agents entered the mechanical stairwell.
Marcus demanded to accompany them.
Khloe refused.
âThey asked for one person.â
âI will remain below the roof door.â
âYou will follow Ortizâs orders.â
Marcus looked at her.
âYou are asking me to stay behind while you walk into danger.â
âYes.â
âHow did that feel when I did it to you?â
âTerrible.â
âAnd now?â
âStill terrible.â
Khloe stepped closer.
âBut this is not secrecy.â
âYou know the plan.â
âYou know where I am.â
âYou have a voice in the strategy.â
âYou do not have control over my body.â
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
Then he nodded.
âCome back.â
âI intend to.â
The rooftop door opened at four seventeen in the morning.
Cold wind crossed the hospital roof.
Evelyn stood near the helipad.
Her hospital gown moved beneath a dark coat.
One hand pressed against her bleeding shoulder.
A man stood behind her holding a gun.
Thomas Bell.
The missing hospital administrator.
His left thumb carried a scar.
Gideonâs scar.
The masked figure in Khloeâs room had not been Gideon.
It had been Bell wearing a copied thumb scar to direct suspicion.
Bell had altered the records.
Bell had carried Lucasâs badge.
Bell had remained inside the hospital through every lockdown.
âYou survived,â Bell said.
Khloe stopped twenty feet away.
âYou sound disappointed.â
âHelena underestimated your familyâs talent for survival.â
âGideon sent you?â
âGideon hired me.â
âHelena controlled you.â
âHelena controlled everyone.â
Bell pressed the gun closer to Evelyn.
âThe chip.â
Khloe held up the case.
âRelease her.â
âPlace it on the ground.â
âNo.â
Evelyn looked at Khloe.
âDo not give it to him.â
Bell struck her injured shoulder.
Evelyn cried out.
Khloeâs body moved instinctively.
Bell aimed toward her.
âStop.â
She stopped.
âWhy does Gideon need immunity if he has the offshore money?â Khloe asked.
Bell smiled.
âHe does not care about money now.â
âWhat does he care about?â
âFreedom.â
âThe accounts become leverage.â
âExactly.â
âIf the company collapses, the government will blame him.â
âThe government will negotiate.â
âNot after his attorney died.â
Bellâs expression changed.
Khloe noticed.
âYou did not know Wren was dead.â
Bell said nothing.
âGideon did not send the final threats.â
The wind moved across the roof.
Khloe looked at Evelyn.
âWho installed the camera?â
Evelyn answered.
âI did.â
âWhy?â
âTo catch Bell.â
Khloe stared at her.
Evelyn continued.
âI suspected someone remained inside.â
âThe camera sent footage to Lucas.â
âBell copied the feed.â
âWhy did you leave your room?â
âHe contacted me.â
âWhat did he say?â
âThat he knew where Vivian hid the final Northstar roster.â
Bell tightened his grip.
âEnough.â
Khloe understood.
Bell was not working only for Gideon.
He wanted the ledger chip for himself.
With the offshore keys and evidence, he could sell protection to every person named in the files.
âYou killed Wren,â Khloe said.
âHe recognized you.â
Bell smiled.
âHe always believed administrators were invisible.â
âHe learned too late that invisible men hear everything.â
âYou do not intend to release Evelyn.â
âNo.â
âYou do not intend to let me leave.â
âNo.â
âThen why would I give you the chip?â
âBecause mothers make irrational trades.â
Khloe looked at Evelyn.
Her mother had made decades of irrational trades.
Lives for secrets.
Consent for safety.
Truth for time.
Khloe refused the pattern.
She opened the case.
Bell watched.
Khloe removed the chip.
Then she snapped it between her fingers.
Bell shouted.
He moved the gun toward Khloe.
Evelyn drove her elbow into his ribs.
The gun fired.
Marksmen responded.
Bell fell.
Federal agents rushed onto the roof.
Marcus reached Khloe before anyone else.
He checked her face, shoulders, and hands.
âI am fine.â
âEvelyn?â
Agents lifted her.
The bullet had grazed her side.
She remained conscious.
Bell was alive.
The marksmanâs round struck his shoulder.
Ortiz recovered the broken chip.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
âThat was the original.â
âYes.â
âThe offshore keys.â
âCopied yesterday.â
Marcus stared.
Khloe almost smiled.
âBlack knight.â
âYou moved around the edge.â
âI learned from your family.â
Bell was taken into custody.
His devices contained the full hospital conspiracy.
He had worked for Northstar for fourteen years.
He confessed after learning Gideon intended to blame him for everything.
Gideonâs immunity negotiation ended.
The prosecutor rejected the deal.
Judge Shaw agreed to testify.
Celeste and Malcolm accepted plea agreements.
Helena remained in custody without bail.
The threat network finally began collapsing.
Evan left respiratory support two days later.
Khloe held him against her chest for the first time.
His body felt impossibly small.
Marcus sat beside her.
He did not ask to hold the baby.
Khloe looked at him.
âWash your hands.â
Marcus obeyed quickly.
Khloe placed Evan into his arms.
Marcus looked down at his son.
Tears moved silently across his face.
âI am sorry,â he whispered.
Khloe knew the apology was not only for Evan.
It was for Daniel.
For her.
For every choice Marcus once believed could be postponed.
Evan opened his eyes.
Marcus smiled through the tears.
A nurse entered carrying official documents.
The federal court had issued control orders for Thorne Meridian.
The company would enter temporary public-interest receivership.
The Founders Trust required a guardian decision.
Khloe remained Evanâs legal guardian.
Daniel and Emilia were recognized as Theoâs parents.
Together, the two childrenâs shares could determine the companyâs future.
Khloe looked at Daniel.
âWe do not give the company back to the family.â
âNo.â
âWe give the employees representation.â
âYes.â
âWe sell the medical subsidiaries to nonprofit systems.â
âYes.â
âWe fund every Northstar survivor.â
âYes.â
Marcus listened.
He no longer led the conversation.
Khloe turned toward him.
âYou built part of this company.â
âI did.â
âYou know how to dismantle the dangerous parts.â
âYes.â
âWill you help?â
âIf the receiver approves.â
âNot as CEO.â
âNo.â
âNot as my husband.â
Marcusâs expression changed.
Khloe continued.
âNot yet.â
Hope entered his face carefully.
âThen as what?â
âAs Evanâs father.â
Marcus looked down at the child.
âI can do that.â
May you like
Khloe held his gaze.
âProve it.â
